Turned down the Cardinals gig to lead the way in the upcoming draft for the Bear.

The smell of success is getting stronger.

I'd rather have the two extra 3rd round picks the niners got unless this guy is a draft savant

From what I read, he has to be there two years before they are able to collect 2-3 round picks. So had he left, they would get nothing for him this year.

He won't get a single offer next year after the Bears turn in another sub 6 win season

I’d love to know what this guy brings to the table.

Or they get to 8-9 wins and he can claim to be part of the group that rebuit the hapless franchise commonly known as the Chicago Bears.

It seems highly likely they improve significantly next year as they will be able to significantly upgrade the roster, a fairly smart bet on himself.

Guys like Pace and visor boy are still cashing NFL checks, so Cunningham will continue to be gainfully employed in the NFL for years to come and eventually gets a shot at a GM job.

Kudos to the Bears for hiring minority folks in positions of authority. The revised Rooney rule is encouraging that, and it could benefit both the franchise and the folks they have given an opportunity to.

I'm curious about that as well.

When Poles hired him, somebody I was listening to (I think Bernstein) was making a point that Pace was overwhelmed by the non football part of the job - talking to sponsors, media, representing the team at events, being George’s valet, etc. That’s all in addition to scouting, cap management and the stuff that you’d assume GMs spend their time doing.

He’d framed the Cunningham hire as somebody who can reduce that burden on Poles. So I’m more confused if Poles is the administrative guy and Cunningham is the football guy when I’d assumed the opposite would be true.

Or maybe Bernstein was wrong about the whole thing.

Poles is going to have to do better in free agency than last year when he botched the offensive line, chasing Ryan Bates, only to have him matched, and the disaster Lucas Patrick signing...Larry Ogunjobi, doing nothing to address the WR position with options like Zay Jones and Christian Kirk out there(both had over 80+ catches this season) which led to the overpay disaster for Chase Claypool.

Stacking extra early round picks increases the chances of hitting on a quality player, sure you will have misses, but if they hit on 3 out of the 4 or more 1st through 3rd round picks they should end up with after trading back you come out with 3 guys that will fill core slots for the next 5 years.

The only real way to success in the NFL is via the draft, stocking up on picks helps you to increase your odds of success.

The cap situation presents an almost more difficult challenge, overspending on vets that can only give you one or two years of quality production is a trap a lot of GM's fall into, that said Julian Davenport looks like a guy who will be a star for the next 3-5 years, so would be willing to overpay for him, but from what Poles has been saying they likely will be spreading the money out on competent younger guys rather than jumping in on overpaying on an aging vet.

Almost seems as if they have insulated themselves from incompetence by filling the draft room with guys like Cunningham and Poles who spent time in the KC and Baltimore systems.

If Poles hits on 50% of his top picks, he's going to be in the HoF.
