What's up people. Long time lurker, first time poster.

Last Call is slowly becoming my favorite show on the Score. Goff and Abbatacola need to be given a full-time slot. If they want to bump North or Murph, I wouldn't have a problem with that. :D

I really like their show. I just wish they'd get the 6-11 slot on weekdays somtimes. I'm burned out on Zaidman, and while I do enjoy Holmes, he's been on an awful lot lately.

And speaking of the 6-11 slot, when did the Score stop airing local content at 11 instead of 12? I don't like Rick Ballou at all, and the constant local commercials overrunning the first minute or two after each break makes the 11:00 hour almost unlistenable.

I think they could be the future of the station, that new blood/next generation that the Score so desperately needs. How much longer can they push 55 year old men to try and reach the 25-34 demographic? You have to recruit that next generation of listeners. Hell, I'm 36, and I have a hard time relating to a morning guy who talks Debbie Reynolds' hair color. Add to that, Murph and his Dickie Goodman-esque suckfest, and a grumpy, hateful afternoon host who sounds like he's ready to be fitted for depends, and you have an out of touch staff. How do you expect a 25 year old to buy into that? I agree drinky & grady should get the occasional 6-11 shift, because their show is best suited for evenings. Plus, I find the didactic, know-it-all Zack Zaidman unlistenable. Also, they should give them any and all of Jesse's time.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. I also find them amusing, but I highly doubt they could carry 20 hours a week worth of programming.

Grandma trivia just isn't that good a bit...

But to answer A7X's post, yes, they can certainly have all of Jesse's time. Zaidman can get his arrogant ass back to the update booth as well.

I like Abbatacola as the driver, but Goff doesn't cut it for me across the board. Love his basketball stuff (never understood why the Score didn't give the kid an hour a week for a hoops only show), but I'm really not that interested in anything he has to offer on football and baseball.

I'm not saying that they're ready for a daily 4 hour gig. I would just like to see them pinch-hit more often then they do. I think they have a lot of potential, and with more seasoning could take that next step. I agree that Goff is raw, but there's hope for improvement. I remember back when Mac would fill in for Chet, and he was brutal, but it was valuable experience. Mac eventually hit his stride, but it requires mic time.

I would be fine w/ that. They'd probably be on twice a week in the evening slot, plus it'd be nice to know who's going to be on regularly. I hate tuning in on my drive home to the mystery show, then realizing it's Jesse or Canellis or Zaidman, and having to sift through the random CDs laying around in the car.

The problem, though, is they're both producing the B&B show from 2-6. They probably arrive circa noon, and they'd be on the air until 11 or 12 at night. That's a pretty long day. I'm not shedding any tears for them, but still, it's a long way to midnight when you punch in at noon. Working overtime at the office is one thing, but being tired and having a microphone in front of you is probably not the best idea.

I was surprised to hear Abbattacola doing an ad today talking about how he graduated from a 10 month broadcasting program in Lombard that qualified him for the Score job. Now he's on-air. Most other broadcasting outlets across the country only have college grads on the air. But here we have a major market station putting people on the air with only a 10 month broadcasting program and some tech. or producer experience? Does anyone else find this strange? I'm not saying a non-grad could not do the job successfully. It just seems that it's a rare non-grad who is smart enough or worldly enough to carry a talk show. Look at the evidence we already have of that on this same station.

It also helps to explain why these guys at the Score are paid so poorly. A mere ten months of education after high school doesn't result in nice paychecks in any industry.

PS. I'm over 50 and I can't relate to Debbie Reynolds either. Mike North is the oldest living 54 year old. I think he's really 64...or his musical and entertainment tastes are anyway.

Kind of shocked me too about Abbatocola coming from that 10 month school. Oh well. He is one of the lucky ones I guess.

Matt and Jason do a nice job - it's too bad they can't get a more regular show on weekdays.

...back in the day, I also thought Me and Z was a pretty good listen.

The problem with the Score is that their 'local programming' ABSOLUTELY SUCKS on weekends.

I can't listen to Dave Baum on Saturday mornings. The guy has one foot in the retirement home and the other is stepping out of his shit-filled Depends.

...after today's first NCAA game, I heard all this Sporting News Radio drivel on the air.

I remember when I was actually excited that the Score was going to be broadcasting 24/7.

Hell, they can't even provide a SOLID ENTERTAINING 8 hours of local programming anymore. 6AM to 11PM = 17 hours of local programming and 7 hours of Sporting News Radio and a lame ass stockmarket show.

i like their show as well...
but, I don't know if they'd go over well on weeknights and I would prefer that they would not change the show content at all in order to fit on weeknights.

Goff's knowledge on topics aside from football is limited. He rarely puts together a sentence without pauses or several "uhhs." It's frustrating to listen to. Doesn't really have a good personality aside from that. Not one fit for radio. His career is best fit behind a booth, not in front of a microphone.

Abbatacola is fine. Holmes and Abbatacola together, IMO, are the two
personalities fit for late broadcasts. I just have trouble listening to Goff's lispy voice for several hours on Saturdays. Even if it is every two weeks.

On the topic of Saturdays, I'm REALLY fucking tired of Blackhawks hockey. Seriously. I know it gives Jesse Rogers something to do, but it's on almost every damn day. Most nights I'd prefer listening to local radio personalities discuss sports topics of interest, not another Blackhawks ass whooping.

Goff knows as much about hoops as anyone in this town. Actually, it's his football & baseball coverage that leaves something to be desired IMO...

Actually, classroom education isn't all that necessary in the broadcast world. I learned more in my 6 month internship than I did in all of my college courses. And the school he went to, Illinois Center for Broadcasting, is fairly well respected where I work. The ICB interns we have had have consistently been better than some of the bigger name schools such as Columbia and Loyola. Just my own personal opinion though.

If that's true, I haven't heard the broadcasts where he was allowed to expand upon his basketball knowledge. As of the last two months--when I've been listening frequently--the Bulls are practically on the shelf, and since baseball hasn't begun yet I've only heard a full sample of Goff's football knowledge. Compared to Holmes or Zaidmen it's pathetic, but enough to offer insightful commentary.

Now granted, I've haven't heard him talk much about baseball--but if he has trouble pronouncing Tadahito Iguchi's name, as I heard one night, then it's certaintly not a good sign of things ot come.

Even with these negatives, I still listen; mostly because there's no other alternative. Even though I dislike Goff, it's nowhere near the level of hate I hold for Mike North. Not because of his ignorant, often racist neoconservative personality--but because he doesn't have a worthy opinion outside of sports.

Has anyone ever seen North on Chicago Tribune Live? Night and day from his morning show. He typically offers good insight into every topic discussed in their 'roundtable.' Often I've agreed with his assessments. The way I see it, such a controlled environment allows North to speak his mind, but keeps out the nonsense which accompanies it on the radio.

Very few people have said Mikey can't be entertaining when focused on discussing sports. The primary reason he (& his debacle of a morning show) get crucified here is precisely because he's gotten away from the formula that formed the foundation of his audience.

As to Matt & Jason they are getting better. Matt is the more polished of the two but Jason IMHO needs a little more seasoning to get his "legs". Is Holmes better? At this point yes but only because he has more experience.

The first couple of times I listened they gave off too much of an "exclusive frat boy" aura. Too many inside jokes & personal crap. A little of that can enhance & personalize a show with an audience... too much of it is irritating.

Ideally I'd like to see them get a regular Saturday & Sunday night show and eventually move into a weeknight slot.

Very good call Nas, they sound much more casual than the show that claims to be at the "Tavern". I think their friendship inside and outside of work makes this show what it is. Unfortunately, I think that charm that it has would eventually wear off on a daily program, so they're kind of in a catch-22. I've called in a couple times to them, and they've always been very accomodating, as well. [/i]

That’s because Mitch wouldn’t know good radio if it kicked him in the sac. They really should give Jason an hour a week to talk Bulls and Chicagoland college hoops. He’s quite good, actually.

I am well into the years of my life where obligations outweigh my desire to go out hard on a Saturday night. Even with my limited nightlife, I rarely tune in to late weekend shows. Guys, you have got to get out more, or at least get to know yourselves better over a good stack of erotica.

I usually hear the show on my way out. I normally head out around 11-12, so I listen while I'm getting ready and heading somewhere. Definately not sitting around listening to the radio on a Saturday night.

That's just Dolphin being Dolphin. If he were in charge, there would probably be nothing but paid programming on the air during certain hours.

Also, some of us do have radios in our vehicles, GD. As someone that drives from the burbs to the city or from one burb to another, I often turn the mechanism on as a means to make traffic and traffic lights less annoying. But that's just me.

I drink at work and stay home on the weekends.

Those guys are going to get a regular gig when somebody goes away from the Score.

I'm thinking Murph throws a chair thru the studio window and jumps out of it. OR

TB pees on the mic at his home studio and is electricuted.

How much older can the Score lineup get? I gotta go, Telander called and wants me to watch his kids tonight.

I think we all assumed that, Greg, but kind of kept it quiet for his sake. Plus, he partook in a thread that mentioned it and he neither confirmed nor denied if I remember correctly.
