Can see Poles upgrading both lines with solid pro's who will be upgrades from last year, but the draft and free agency looks to be devoid of a true consensus #1 franchise QB, a franchise LT, or a bonafide #1 WR, even the top defensive guys have a few question marks.
Next year you will have Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Brock Bowers, and Marvin Harrison Jr. all guys that are better prospects than anyone in this years draft, this makes the idea of picking up a 1st round pick next year from a team like the Raiders, which will likely be a top 5 pick next year very enticing.
I had a delusional scenario for a second where they trade down to #2, the #4 and finally to the Raiders, gaining first round picks next year each time.
You aren't getting the Texans #1 next season. They also have the Browns pick next year.
Was also in love with the double trade down, but not sure it makes any sense for the Texans, and what would they give you to move up one spot, a second or third?
However, this is the NFL and it just takes one goofy owner or a one Ryan Pace to fall in love with a guy, so anything could happen.
You could likely get more in future returns from the Raiders or Panthers, but you move down below the #7 you likely do not get one of the top defensive players, but the Raiders will likely pick in the Top 5 next year and you have much better skill position prospects in next years draft.
Seems that Payne is the lever that could tip this as he is obviously the guy you would want to solidify your D line, but if he's franchised your looking at some second tier guys in FA, so you likely need to get one of the top d line guys in the draft, and from what I read about Jalen Carter he is kind of a slightly smaller version of Akiem Hicks, a big athletic guy who likely will not be real interested in staying in shape after signing a big contract, starting to see similar scouting reports on Murphy from Clemson, so there are red flags for several of the top D lineman, this makes me wonder if Poles will stockpile and move down in order to take the top college o lineman.
Poles strikes me as a guy that has had a master plan all along, it's the only explanation for the way he approached last season, and I'm betting it will likely be to totally revamp both lines, just do not know if he believes in Fields.
