Wow, that sucks. He was great with the Sox, and I always hoped they'd bring him back. Would much rather have him than Benetti. Really sucks. Local guy, too.

One of the many Sports Phone guys who went on to bigger things. Used to occasionally be on with Les overnight. Had to take time off last year with a heart problem. Weight an issue at times. Shame he had to leave Chicago to get his dream job.

Yeah he used to be really good on those Sox radio broadcasts back then.

Shame he never got to do play-by-play full-time with the Sox. Missed opportunity not having him replace John Rooney. Gotta respect how much he hated the Cubs. He was committed.

Typical Sox. They have the logical guy but they prefer Smarmy Stone and Goofy Benetti.

It's almost as if Jerry takes a poll of what fans would like and does the exact opposite.

Well, in Wills's case, they went with Ed Farmer on play-by-play and brought in Chris Singleton, who is good now but was bad then.(Not to mention Rongey taking over pre/post, which may have been a Score decision.) Weird Jerry snubbing Wills is one of the first things I remember being a hot topic here.

I don't like what Jason Benetti represents, which is roughly "what it would be like if I called a baseball game." I don't want to hear a baseball announcer doing David Foster Wallace references. I get enough of that from myself.

This was not an act. Our group had MANY drinks with him at TC's in Oak Lawn back in the day. He absolutely despised all things Cub and Wrigley.

Was a great guy. Far too young

Just horrible. Wills and his radio partner Andy Freed had maybe the second best radio baseball broadcast behind the Giants.

He had an arrhythmia last year. The type of thing that if you are sleeping you may not even notice until it's too late, especially if it went into AFib.

Wife and I think one or two kids.

Just horrible.

"The Shrine," right?

He was a great pre and post guy and also seemed like a legit Southside guy. I actually think McKnight is decent at pre and post, but Wills had more of a common touch to him.

  Yep.

Also used World's Largest Beer Garden often, but I don't know if he actually coined that phrase or not

I don't think having a guy who is a real fan of the team in that role is too much to ask. With Rongey it was like having Hillary's campaign manager take calls from Trump supporters.

Word is he had been approved for an in game job by all parties awaiting Reinsdorf's approval.

I loved the guy's work. He could be too much of that south side trash on occasion but he LOVED the Sox and it showed in his work.

Its been redone and gone thru a few name changes over the years. This was back when it was a true corner tavern with the long wooden tables and had the old Soldier Field painted on the ceiling.

When Willsie he was alone at the bar he would almost always hold court. This was also well before social media was around so you couldn't get some of the inside info on injuries and things like you can now.

58 is just way too young.
He was a treasure doing white sox pre and post. As already noted...he was a true Sox fan along with being a very good at radio. A combo that seems to be something Reinsdorf wants no part of.

Sad....RIP, Drillrod!

Pretty much agree with everything here.

any time I felt bad for him never realizing his dream job with the Sox, I remember that his alternative was having an in game job at a place where he could walk the beaches every day before work, broadcast for a team that was always in contention and instead going to TC's for one after the game, go to a tiki bar and listen to the waves roll in

I thought Tampa rolled up the sidewalks at like 9pm?

Probably a good reason not to be carrying around 100 extra pounds.

Dave Wills had a highly treatable heart condition last year with a virtually zero mortality rate. Given a battery of tests and procedures, treatments for his condition. Given the all clear to return to work. Dies months later unexpectedly. Lots of questions I'm sure by the family.
