Agreed.

But just to play devil’s advocate, what would you say is the issue that was brought to light this weekend? Not for me obviously, but for the willfully ignorant who may not know what you’re talking about.

The sun rose in the East, and brogue is triggered. It must suck to live that sort of life where you roll out of bed and jump online before you even take your morning shit to racial things to get upset about.

the jealousy may very well be true and no one can say women of color aren't being highlighted when I can't turn on basketball game, regardless of level or gender and not see Candace Parker front and center

Angel Reece would like a word.

This is taken out of context. Her basic message is if Caitlin Clark can do the "you can't see me" thing to someone else then why can't I? She's right. If you're gonna call Reese a poor sport for her taunt then you have to say the same about Caitlin's taunts.

Clark is a taunting shit-talker, but there is a difference between doing that in the heat of the game and chasing someone around the court after you've defeated them.

Anyway, I do understand where Reese is coming from, though I think people- and probably Reese herself- is misconstruing the situation as having to do with race. There is privilege at play, but it's privilege based upon societal beauty standards rather than skin color. Clark certainly isn't benefiting from any such privilege. Candace Parker obviously is. Unlike Reese and Clark, Parker and Livvy Dunne are cute as hell. It is what it is. No. 55 on LSU ain't getting a TV gig.

This thread seemed to turn a corner when it became a list of NIL beneficiaries who became famous from pure, athletic talent.

People want to pull it back into complaints and complaints about those complaints.

Maybe someone should have considered that a friendly and photogenic bench player might be more popular with sponsors than a face-tattooed greatest linebacker in history who is being investigated in a homicide when they implemented the system.

Of course it has to do with race. To pretend it doesn't to a certain extent is to belittle the unfortunately valid claims of some and to deny reality.

And to claim that Reese herself may be misconstruing the issue is remarkably patronizing and high handed. Are you the arbiter of truth at every turn?

As someone who enjoys, watches, and is involved with plenty of women's sports, I didn't like the 2nd Reese taunt at all. She can do whatever she wants, but as lame as it sounds, the sportsmanship is a great part of women's sports. If they want to be more like men's sports in that respect, that's an L.

The latter gets to have a career in sports. The former gets to have a career because of sports.

The system works!

Of course she is, and she's backed it up. That makes the shit talking sweeter. I also agree shit talking between the lines is preferable to "chasing" someone around after the game is over. That said, I'm an old man, and this is a new era.

For the life of me this illustrates yet another problem with social media, in particular Twitter. This college kid has allegedly been catching crap for her appearance all season. To expect her not to have a reaction or to feel embattled is unrealistic. Plus I find trash talking hilarious when done well.

But Keith Olbermann proved himself to be an ass crying for relevancy.

She's a college kid who deserves leeway for her mistakes!
Don't patronize this wise person!

Which is it?

It may have to do with race in as much as the societal beauty standard generally favors white blondes. But Clark is the wrong target for such ire. If a TV job opens up and Skylar Diggins and Clark are in the running, I'm gonna say Clark is out of luck.

I don't think she made a mistake. And by the looks of many of the recent ESPN women's basketball analysts we may both be wrong about hiring. Because otherwise I'd have agreed with you.

Call me crazy, but the woman who puts on a tiara when her name is announced pre game, might just be a tad disingenuous when she objects to overexuberance of her opponent.

Lay it bare. We're all big girls.

It's also what Dawn Staley said about her team. Staley specifically said they were called monkeys. If this is true, there should be a reckoning on the subject and it has caused all kinds of misplaced resentment downstream.

I admit they seem to be pushing Clark in a way that is unlike the push given to any other female basketball player. Is that because she's white or because she's great? I have no idea.

Anyway, I've said too much on the subject already. I don't care about women's basketball and this hasn't made me care about it. I'm starting to feel like we're getting into bernstein territory, like never mentioning hockey but then devoting an entire show to Bobby Hull beating his wife.

No, she just allowed to put that shit out there without affirmation and not get called on it. ( gee I wonder why?) She's specifically talking about members of the media " saying" stuff about her and her team . Name them then.

Some of the people in the media, when you're gathering in public, you're saying things about our team, and you're being heard, and it's being brought back to me.

“And these are the people that write nationally for our sport. So you cannot like our team and you cannot like me. But when you say things that you probably should be saying in your home on the phone or texting out in public and you're being heard, and you are a national writer for our sport, it just confirms what we already know. So watch what you say when you're in public and you're talking about my team in particular.

I think she's deserved all of the accolades and attention she's gotten but it's sad that the discussion has made this turn.

Idk, if Clark wants to taunt opposing players while beating their ass then it's fair game if opponents want to taunt her while ending her season. If you're gonna dish it then you should be able to take it. It's possible she already has this attitude, which is great for her.

Reese/LSU were obviously triggered by Clark's shit-talking and had a plan to dish out some of their own. What is interesting is they appeared to take offense on behalf of other players not on their team, particularly African American players. Reese's comments suggest if African American players were shit talking others the way Clark has then they'd be stigmatized and not celebrated (Reese/teammates are "too ghetto" while Clark is on the cover of major magazines). Though it's no fault of Clark's I actually believe this sentiment. Would love to be corrected by data but it's likely that any available data supports the notion that shit-talking black/hispanic players are not excused/rationalized/celebrated for their shit-talking the way white players seem to be. Again, if there's data out there saying the opposite, would love to see it.

It's also hard to extricate the issue from run of the mill SEC arrogance across every sport.

Probably triggered by Clark here too . People telling her shes too hood or too ghetto . Im sure if Clark were photo’d doing this she’d get a pass.

Probably triggered by Clark here too . People telling her shes too hood or too ghetto . Im sure if Clark were photo’d doing this she’d get a pass.
