So yesterday I heard Mac try to persuade the audience that Hockey's rule of ending a game at the end of the 20 minute period, while a powerplay is in progress is a dumb rule.
He thinks that the game should be extended until the completion of the powerplay.

What color is the sky in your world Mac?
Or as B&B would say, "are you Hockey retarded?"
Can't you see the problem you're creating?
What happens when a team commits another penalty while in the extended time? Do you keep playing until all powerplays are completed?
Theoretically you are creating a scenario of an endless game.
If I'm a goal behind with 5 seconds left, I commit an intentional penalty to at least give myself a chance to score a shorty and tie it up. Then I do it again, and again, and again...

It's a shame that CXL is DOA cause you get a huge thumb down for that suggestion.

BTW,
What's your suggestion for 1/2 the distance to the goal penalties in football? I mean shouldn't the team get the full benefit of the penalty yardage.

#1)Soccer has extra time after regulation but before overtime.
#2)Soccer sucks

therefore

Any game that has extra time after regulation but before overtime sucks.

nice, Rob.

"by rule...since line of scrimmage is at the -7 yard line, the offense only needs to complete the center-quarterback exchange to score a touchdown."

The half court inbounds was a great point by a caller

I always thought it was stupid that a manager cannot aruge balls and strikes. I'm not saying that they should be able to go out every inning and throw a tantrum, but if they have a legit beef with an ump, managers should be able to ask him about the strike zone

Both teams need to get an offensive posession in NFL's overtime

Coaches calling a timeout like 2 milliseconds before a FG is kicked at the end of a half/game/OT is ridiculous

Batters being granted timeout at the plate when a pitcher is already starting his windup. Such BS that one is

Boilermaker, for the record, soccer is the only sport I know where the referee keeps the time on the field, so the clocks in the stadium & on TV mean ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!! This from someone who worked the Chicago Fire home games in front of half-empty Soldier Field for 2 years before they moved to TOYOTA Park. Here's another dumb sports rule, the designated hitter! I heard "Tirico & Van Pelt" with guest co-host Michele Tafoya mentioned it yesterday before Game 1 of the World Series between the Phillies & Rays. While the DH benefitted the likes of Edgar Martinez, Frank Thomas & Jim Thome and extended their careers, I've also heard that the DH makes players one-dimensional as well.

coin flip....hmmm...

don't agree about the batter, with the umpire factor and all..

football refs keep time on the field as well.

Funny,
I always thought it was stupid that they are allowed to argue all the other calls.

I think you could negate the situation when the winning team would have the power play.

Has a call ever been reversed after a manager argued?

Stupidest unwritten rule - bench-clearing "brawls" in baseball. Make it like the NBA, you leave the dugout or your position, you're booted from the game.

Leaving the dugout? Yes, very stupid, and should merit a suspension. But leaving your position? I dunno...it would make for some interesting explanations as for why the center fielder was rushing to the mound...

We were putting the Thome shift on...honestly...

Here's a personal beef-

In football, any defender so much as touches the ball-carriers facemask, it's a penalty. I understand that part. If lineman or DB's hit/grab each other's facemask, it's a penalty for "hands to the face". Got it - I understand. So how the hell ball carrier is allowed to stiff arm in the face, which is usually more like a strong punch, I'll never understand. makes no sense.

Also - "off-setting" penalties are usually pretty stupid.

Sp are the idiots that are allowed to run up to a pile after a fumble and pull people off without even attempting to get the ball.

It's all I could come up with to combat the whole 1 batter vs 9 fielders situation....

Along with that one spanky, getting rid of the 5 yard facemask was incredibly stupid. There are times when, believe it or not, a defender grabs a ball carriers facemask on accident. When that happens, it should not be a 15 yard penalty.

Yeah, I was gonna say that too, but I have to pace myself. There are a lot of rules I could add to this list.

Such as - Football Penalties near/in the endzone:

they are far too punitive for the defensive team, IMO. A defender commits a penalty (interference) in their own endzone, ball placed on the one AND it becomes 1st down - becoming an almost automatic TD. Offensive penalties? Just yardage - no loss of downs for the most part.

I agree with your main point, but do you think there are times when people tackle by the facemask on purpose? I think they just happen to grab the facemask and some yanking is more flagrant than others.

When an onside kick goes out of bounds and the kicking team gets a 5 yard penalty and re-kicks. What do they care about 5 yards for? Why give them another chance whe they screwed up the first one?

I thought that a kick off that goes out of bounds results in the receiving team getting the ball at the 40 yard line. Didn't realize there was a different rule for onside kicks.

After 2 pickoff attempts the pitcher should have to come to the plate.
It would make stolen bases more common and exciting.

IMO, an offensive holding penalty s/b 5 yards rather than 10. They're too subjective, too frequent and too often drive killers.

Also - while it is not a "dumb rule" issue - whatever happened to the coffin corner kick? It was a staple in the 70's and 80's. Now everything is kick it inside the 20....boring.

Last 2 minutes of an NFL game, any loss of yardage should mean a stop of the clock if you are the team in the lead. This would eliminate taking a knee.

What would be the penalty if he does not? Ball and a free base? So I could go, pickoff, pickoff, pitchout, pickoff, pickoff, pitchout and just be down 2-0 and possibly get the runner stealing 2nd? I don't think there are that many times that someone tries more than 2 pickoff attempts in a row (yes, I have seen them occasionally, but they don't even happen once a game on average.)

Touchback rule in football. If it does not go out of the endzone, play on.

Get rid of the 2 ref system in the NHL.Too many guys on the ice already and some games have as many as 19 to 24 power plays a game. It slows the game down with all the whistles and hockey is meant to be a 5 on 5 sport and most nights since the 2 ref system it's a 5 on 4 game for 20 minutes a night.

Almost 23,000 at the UC on Saturday night and the Hawks had an 8 to 3 advantage on the powerplay and the game was as good as it can get without 11 whistles to stop the flow of the game that night.
