Baseball is becoming a joke. Can you even make a play on a runner at home anymore? That's ridiculous.

Why do all these teams from Texas cheat?

I agree the rule is dumb. But they explained it later on the broadcast that the catcher cannot have a foot on the plate, which the guy did. I think bracketing the plate is also not allowed. Great challenge by the Sox.

It's a joke because the rule was intended to protect catchers, not fuck them in the ass. The foot on the plate is clearly unintentional and part of the act of catching the ball. Just like catching the ball up the line that unintentionally impedes the runner is legal. It's a bad call

Good call. Cub fans who watch the Sox while there team is playing don't seem to understand the rules

4.5 out of first

Were the White Sox challenging this play because of catch interference or taking a shot that he was safe at the plate?

Definitely one of the worse calls I can remember seeing. That was not interference, and the catcher did not block the plate. I don't care if his foot was on the corner of the plate. That rule is very bad if that was technically correct.

I don't know. Does it matter? Does the team calling for a challenge have to specify what they are looking for, or if the umps see anything they can make a change? I honestly don't know.

Might as well use the challenge at that point in the game regardless.

Can't blame the umps because they are calling the game according to the rulebook. You can and should blame MLB for another stupid rule they have implemented.

It doesn't matter, but it would have to have been him being safe at the plate because nobody thought that was interference. I guess if the White Sox challenged if he was safe allowed the umpire to rule that interference by the catcher was illegal.

MLB does need to change that rule, but I would guess that most umpires would not have changed that call and nobody would have even noticed the catcher interference.

This reminds me of the time Calvin Johnson didn't "complete the process of a catch". I was happy with the call as a Bears fan, but the I knew the call was bullshit.

The rule isn't the problem. Reading comprehension is.
It seems pretty clear that the runner would be out in this case.
Get better replay reviewers so this doesn't happen to my team.

(2) Unless the catcher is in possession of the ball, the catcher cannot block the pathway of the runner as he is attempting to score. If, in the judgment of the umpire, the catcher without possession of the ball blocks the pathway of the runner, the umpire shall call or signal the runner safe. Not withstanding the above, it shall not be considered a violation of this Rule 6.01(i)(2) if the catcher blocks the pathway of the runner in a legitimate attempt to field the throw (e.g., in reaction to the direction, trajectory or the hop of the incoming throw, or in reaction to a throw that originates from a pitcher or drawn-in infielder). In addition, a catcher without possession of the ball shall not be adjudged to violate this Rule 6.01(i)(2) if the runner could have avoided the collision with the catcher (or other player covering home plate) by sliding.

Rule 6.01(i)(2) Comment: A catcher shall not be deemed to have violated Rule 6.01(i)(2) unless he has both blocked the plate without possession the ball (or when not in a legitimate attempt to field the throw), and also hindered or impeded the progress of the runner attempting to score. A catcher shall not be deemed to have hindered or impeded the progress of the runner if, in the judgment of the umpire, the runner would have been called out notwithstanding the catcher having blocked the plate. In addition, a catcher should use best efforts to avoid unnecessary and forcible contact while tagging a runner attempting to slide. Catchers who routinely make unnecessary and forcible contact with a runner attempting to slide (e.g., by initiating contact using a knee, shin guard, elbow or forearm) may be subject to discipline by the League President. All references to “the catcher” in this Rule 6.01(i) shall apply equally to other players covering home plate. In addition, Rule 6.01(i)(2) shall not apply to force plays at home plate.

Rules are pretty clear and if applied correctly, the runner is out. I'm still befuddled how they fucked it up.

Some people have said that if a catcher cannot stand on the plate on a play like that. I don't know if that was the reason why they ruled what they did? Because the catcher definitely did stand on the plate prior to the tag while awaiting the ball. No question, though, that the runner did have a part of the plate to try and swipe left to him by the catcher. I think baseball should clear up the rule going forward.

The catcher supposed to jump in front of the plate and backhand it?

The great AJ Hinch is 174-221 with the Tigers.

Bruce Bochy was the best manager on the market and he is 45-27 with the Rangers.

Sox didn't even interview him :drunken:

He was too old for idiot media members and fans. Hahn makes the best hires
