Drinky asked this question tonight, thought it was good. As a cub fan, did and how did this season change you as a fan?

For me, I will simply refuse to get excited about them until they actually reach a world series, I wont go overboard over anything they do during the regular season any longer, doesnt mean crap.

that happened to me last year. hasn't changed me at all.

the teams that i've been a fan of in all sports have taught me to look at the floor, not the ceiling.

See last year, i didnt think they would get there, for whatever reason I was right, but this was the year i said they had their chance, 30+ games over 500, best record in the nl, dominating pitching and hitting and they crap the bed....again. Its one thing to deal with the last two years, but add, 1969, 1984 and 2003 to it, it sucks the fun out of it, being a fan that is, to me, i just dont trust them. Sounds meatball, but I am not going to put a target on my nuts any longer so they can kick me there again. I dont know, as cooooooooooooooach said, "this to shall pass"...maybe.

well, at this point, there's no use thinking about it because it's over, and there's a long off season ahead.

spring training brings new life to the season; i would just...er, curb your enthusiasm.

I'm not saying I wont be a fan, I am not bailing on them, I am just saying the regualr season triumphs dont mean anything to me and I wont be impressed until they reach and win a world series.

This pretty much sums up what it is like to be a Sox fan....since 1983.

First Comment...Winning a World Series is the goal. That is what I cheer for and what I want from the beloved Cubs.

To address the question..I am very excited about next year. I was totally pissed during the playoff's and afterwords. I am still not happy about it....BUT winning back to back division titles, and having a roster of players that get us there again...I can be excited about that. I suffered through too many losing seasons not to like the fact that they are legitimate playoff contenders.

The Atlanta Braves won 12 or 13 division titles in a row....and only won one World Series. As a Cubs fan...I could live with that even though I'd prefer a few more titles. For now...we (cubs fan base) are begging for one World Series championship. Anything else...is gravy

Totally agree. This year the cubs were The best team in the League if not all of baseball. I liked it and sorta fell victim to it. Ive never seen a Cub team that good. 89 they werent dominant, 98 they snuck in, 2003 just got in. I was 4 years old in 1984.

So yeah even though other teams have taught this lesson many times it really hits home when your 97 win team does it...again.

The next time i will get excited is when they have the oppurtunity to clinch a post season series.

If this were the case, they would be preparing Wrigley Field for a game on Saturday nite.

I have felt this way since I became a season ticket holder. Anyone who invests a lot of money with the Cubs likely feels this way too. It is not a new feeling.

Honestly, 2003 changed how I viewed the Cubs as a fan immensely. They got me hooked to the idea that they were going to finally win. There have been 3 significant chokes since then, I have been angry as hell with every one of them. This one was about as bad as 2004.

I don't know if this season changed me much. I know 2003 and 2004 changed me a lot. I was devastated after the '03 choke. I was deeply disappointed after the underwhelming performance in '04 and became more jaded, more bitter. This year and last were just pathetic.

Did not change me a bit. I was a huge Cubs fan and still am. I was thrilled with the way the season went. Estatic to see them become repeat Champions in the N.L. Central. But also bitterly disappointed in the way things went in the post-season. But I look for this team to continue knocking on the door, and eventually kicking the thing in. Come February, I'll be buying tickets to see plenty of games in the coming season, when THE STARS ALL ALIGN IN 2009!!!

It had been 100 years since they had last repeated as division Champions. Milwaukee and St Louis are both good teams and Houston is pretty good too. Look at how few teams repeat as division Champions. It's not an insignificant accomplishment. Again, I was speaking of the way things went in the regular season, which was great. Unfortunately, the post-season went in another direction. Pay attention Dipshit.

Half the division champs from last season ( Phillies, Angels, cubs) repeated so it IS an insignificant accomplishment. Dumbass.

There's no comparison. During their run, the Braves were one of the top organizations in baseball, from their front office to their scouting department to their player development. Their farm system churned out prospect after prospect. In contrast, the Cubs have simply overspent to assemble a team that can win the NL Central, provided most things break right for them. I wouldn't count my string of a dozen division titles and multiple WS appearances quite yet.

To them being, or appearing to be, the best team in baseball... over the last two years, look at their record vs. the AL, not to mention their playoff record. The Cubs are greatly overrated.

So that would mean that the White Sox, who won just 72 games in 2007 on their way to a 4th place finish, (72-90) did nothing of any significance in winning their division this season. Is that your stupid opinion? In my opinion, it was an improvement worthy of at least minimal praise. For the Cubs though, not only did they win back to back division titles, but they did so, in the toughest division in the National league-thats why Milwaukee got the wild card. They had the next best record of non division winning teams. Plus, the Cubs had the BEST record of any team in the league. So what they accomplished on the season cannot be disputed by any rational individual. No matter how much some Dumbass like KS wants to discredit their season, it cannot be done. The post-season, I cannot defend. I will not try. I hope that as some suggest, the Cubs can continue as the Braves did, in winning 14 division titles in a row, while winning a World Series as well. The Cubs have the money, farm system and established talent to continue to win year after year. KS-If you're happy and you know it kiss my ass.....Come on everyone, sing along...

I think the Cubs had a great year, but I don't think that you measure a division's "toughness" by which one has the wild card. You could have two teams win 96+ games and the third place team win 84 games. That's not really a "tough" division.

But with Milwaukee winning 90 and both St. Louis and Houston both winning 86, it was a very good division with several (4) winning teams.

Your points are valid. I was not comparing the Cubs to the Braves so much as I was saying the Braves won a lot of division titles and only had one world series victory to show for it. The Cubs have now won two (recently), regardless of the how & why,....and they are talented enough to win again next year. It takes getting into the playoff's in order to have a chance to win the world series. IF....IF....IF the cubs were lucky enough to win 12 or 13 division titles in a row...and have ONE...just ONE wolrd series victory to show during that time frame...I could accept that...though not winning more titles would suck a little. We (cubs fans) just want a damn world series title!

I see what you mean; I just hope they don't get complacent with their 97 wins and the fact that the NL will still be a down league next year. They need to get much better to seriously contend for a WS. It's not improbable if they make the playoffs again next year that they get bounced out in round 1 yet again.

I have to say though, that I'm not too hopeful given that I think they are limited in their options for moving the two guys that need to be moved the most, Ramirez and Soriano. Those guys feast on mediocre pitching. In the playoffs they'll be stymied again, if not sooner if another team in the Central stands up and gets real strong.

They can piecemeal all they want, but if those two guys are counted on as their big weapons again, it will be their undoing... again.

The N.L. will be a down league??? How can you say that, before teams make their off-season moves? Depending on who signs which free agents and what trades are made, I think it's pretty hard to really say now, what teams will be in position to contend. Heck, even AFTER the moves are made, you can be fooled. Look at Detroit- everyone thought they had the inside track on the A.L. Central after the deals they made. Then they wet the bed, once the season began. Same for Cleveland. Then on the other side of things, there was the Rays, who may have been thought to be a decent team this year, but I doubt many people saw them beating out Boston and New York, for the A.L. East. But these kinds of things just make the great game of Baseball, that much more enjoyable.
