I would love for the NFL to adopt the college version of overtime.

in the nfl, being able to go "out of the pocket" and throw the ball 30 yards out of bounds without penalty to get out of trouble is a terrible rule. if your quarterback is jittery and runs too much, or your blocking is so bad that he is running for his life, you shouldnt get a free pass without penalty just because you are out of the pocket. intentional grounding should be called in those situations. i hate those pussy throws 2 steps from the sideline just to avoid a loss of yardage.

i agree that each team should get at least one OT possession. if scoreless after each team has had one possession, then whomever scores first wins. hey, each team had plenty of time to score during regulation, we dont need score-fests in OT like in college. play some D. in some of those college games, there is more scoring in OT than there was in the whole game up to that point! that cheapens the regulation 60 minutes.

I think that they should just tweak what they already have.

Instead of sudden death, if team A scores, team B has one possession to answer. If they tie, continue play until a team scores again. If team A kicks a field goal, team B would have the option of going for the tie or the win. This way all phases of the game are involved and each team has a chance on offense.

NFL Overtime should be similar to College except each team gets a possession starting with a kickoff.

Team B kicks to Team A. Team A has to score or turn the ball over on downs. Then Team A kicks to Team B to try to match it.

If, in the first possession, Team A turns the ball over, Team B can take the ball from the recovery point or choose to have Team A kickoff the ball to them. A defensive TD would end the OT.

The team on D first would always have the advantage. So, the Away team would always start on D.

Oh, and 2 point conversions would be mandatory from the opening possession of OT.

Don't like it for 1 reasons 1. This format would also cheapen the playoff games that happen to go into overtime. You have a 10 to 10 game and all of a sudden your placing the ball at the 30 in OT for the right to go to the Superbowl??Green Bay might of wanted that last year but it cheapens the game if you ask me.

See my post directly above. I hate giving them the ball at the 25 or 30 - even in college.

Each team gets a full possession starting with a kickoff (except in the case of a turnover). The 2 point just keeps the game from continuing forever and adds excitement.

An aside, I do think a great "sports" rule is that MJ or H are suspended for the segment if they are not in thier seats ready to go at update time

No touch icing
The wearing of cages/shields after a player gets out of HS hockey. Not sure if it's an official rule, or just he common practice.

why is the spike not a penalty? QB is clearly in the tackle box. the grounding is intentional...

QB's have to indicate to the ref, with the Spike signal (faking the throwing motion as he comes top the line) that they are intentionally going to spike it. Basically giving up a down. This is due to the (I think) Dan Marino play where the fins set up in a 'spike formation' and he ran a play. At least that was how it was explained to me.

YMMV

Intentional Grounding rule specifically states that the penalty is for throwing the ball away to avoid being sacked. Spiking it to stop the clock isn't done to avoid a sack so it is not an intentional grounding penalty. It is a loss of a down but that is about it.

Thanks for the clarification Spaulding...

If the QB makes any other move than immediately taking the snap and spiking the ball, it's intentional grounding. The ball goes back to the original LOS. If the QB takes a knee I think they lose a yard or so.

Lots of weird rules that contradict each other.

im not a huge fan of the spike, either, but to me the team is stating it is willing to take the loss of down penalty right up front, and usually, when a team is in a position that they have to do it, it can be a very significant penalty. i can live with that. but once a play is being run, i just dont like the "get-out-of-jail-free" nature of the out-of bounds lob to save your skin. yes, the offense loses a down, but i think the defense is being penalized for good coverage and/or a good pass rush. the qb should have to run out of bounds and take the loss, continue scrambling and try to make something happen, or simply fall and have it treated like a qb slide, at that point he is down and protected, with loss of down and yardage.

it's still dumb...so, if i run to the sidelines (being chased by large men) then toss it out of bounds, it's not intentional grounding? i was avoiding the sack...
what it's a shotgun and the running back is offset (outside of the tackle box). direct snap to back...and he throws it immediately to the ground.
stupid rule.
why not just indicate "intentional spike" to the referee, pull 5 seconds off the clock and start the next down.

why does a pitcher have to throw 4 balls for an intentional walk?
just give the guy the base already.
it's a walk either way.

Didn't someone somewhere reach out and slap an 'intentional Ball' to right field for a hit? I think against the cuuub?

Because the pitcher and catcher may screw up one of the exchanges. Doesn't happen often, but it does sometimes and if it happens with runners on base there is a penalty.

when there are runners on base and it's an intentional walk....the pitchers usually balk four straight pitches anyway.

I think they should make a rule in baseball where if runners are on 1st and second, or 1st, 2nd and third and less than two out, and the batters pops up on the infield, in fair territory, that batter should be automatically out. This would stop infielders from dropping the ball, or letting it hit the ground on purpose to turn easy double and triple plays.
