Good for him I guess but not a Hall of Famer in my eyes. My guess is that if he were already gone he wouldnt be getting in. I was a pretty young man at the time he was playing but my recollection was that he had better numbers because everything went to him and away from Hampton and Dent.

Didn't deserve it? Didn't the guy play every game for like 8 of 9 years?

Good for him. Personally thought he deserved it for several years. He was better than many thought but was overshadowed by the amazing talent on that D.

Is it a time period in which they are voting on new members of the HOF? Timing seems a little strange to me.

Probably. And I think Patrick Mannelly played every game for 15 years. I though they judge on more than if you just played.

He sure as hell deserves it. When he retired he was 3rd in all time sacks for a defensive tackle. 3rd for christ sake. Now he's like 5th or 6th.

Plus he pretty much played every game. Never hurt. He got overshadowed by Hampton, Dent and Singletary by the national media. And even the fridge was known more by NFL fans outside of Chicago.

But he should have been a first ballot HOFer.

I didn't look it up. I don't think it's been done before. Where a team has 3 out of 4 of their defensive line are in the HOF. Not only that, but 3 guys that were on the Bears for 10 plus years in Dent, Hampton and Mongo. I'm pretty confident no defensive line will ever get 3 out of 4 in the HOF ever again. That's pretty damn amazing.

So that's now 4 HOFers from the Bears defense of the 1980s with Singletary. Covert and Payton make it a total of 6.

Wilber Marshall absolutely should be in as well (He was awesome with the Redskins after he left us). So should Hilgenberg and Bortz. So we should eventually have 9 HOFers from 1985 Bears.

This guy might have been the worst wrestler in the history of wrestling. I would keep him out of the HOF just for that.

Distinguishing yourself on those teams would have been hard. If they give it to a guy who was even okay and dying of ALS that's fine. We've known a few people that had it and it's horrible. The only disease worse that I'm familiar with is Huntington's disease because it is physical and psychological. It's so sad.

Yeah. I hate seeing the pictures of Mongo now. I stumble upon them when he's in the news and I always feel bad that I'm looking at it. I hate seeing him this way.

I always think of him from when I was a kid. Not only as a great player, but he was a funny ass goof ball that everybody loved. Got his autograph when I was like 10 or so. He was cracking jokes to everyone in line with that Texas accent. Making everybody feel important.

He had great numbers from the DT position. Very few create that kind of pressure from the interior. DT is difficult to quantify, kind of like an OL. So much of the position is being able to fight against double teams.

Thats a part of this that is really hard. There are going to be a group of people that think they are only giving it to him because of the ALS. But as has been mentioned his numbers hold up with the greats. He was a great durable DT for one of the great defenses of all time. He is deserving.

Quote:
Does McMichael Deserve It?

The bid by McMichael isn't merely a sympathy vote. Defensive tackle statistics are not necessarily extensive, but he has numbers on par with many of the defensive linemen who have made the Pro Football Hall of Fame from his era and later.

According to Pro Football Reference the average number of sacks for defensive tackles enshrined in Canton is 92.

McMichael played 15 seasons, including 13 in Chicago, and had 95 sacks. He had 92 1/2 with the Bears, ranking him second all time with the team behind Richard Dent.

[Joe} Klecko was just inducted and had 78 career sacks for 12 seasons. He never made a Super Bowl. Former Tampa Bay defensive tackle Warren Sapp is in the Hall and had 96 1/2 sacks for 13 seasons.

Stopping the run was key to what the Bears of the 1980s did on defense and there are few individual stats from that era on this aspect of football. However, McMichael, Dan Hampton and Mike Singletary were the vital cogs in how the Bears ranked first as a team against the run in 1984, 1985, 1987 and 1988. They were second in 1986.

The Bears have more people in the Pro Football Hall of Fame than any franchise, and this sometimes works against them with voters. There are 32 who either played, coached or held administrative positions and it's often speculated electors get tired of putting Bears in the Hall.

McMichael was not in the Pro Bowl as often as Klecko or Sapp. He made two Pro Bowls and two times was All-Pro. However, there is little doubt he was overshadowed in voting by the other defensive starters the Bears had who have made Canton: Singletary, Hampton and Dent.

The truth is, defensive linemen—and defensive tackles in particular—have been slighted in voting for the PFHOF over the years. There are only 19 defensive tackles in the PFHOF, although several were both ends and tackles.

The website Profootballreference.com tracks players eligible for enshrinement or already in with a "Hall of Fame Monitor score," combining numerous aspects of a player's career. McMichael's combined score is 60.18. A score of 100 is the average for a player named to the Hall of Fame at their position.

However, the scores are not always indicative of who gets into the Hall, especially since the advent of seniors voting.

Twelve of the top 15 defensive tackles in terms of score are in the Hall of Fame. McMichael's 60.18 ranks 18th on the chart in overall score.

Klecko and former Chiefs standout Curly Culp, who made the Hall of Fame in 2013, have scores well below McMichael's. Culp's score was 51.95 and Klecko's 46.58.

92 sacks for a interior lineman from that era is pretty impressive, you can justify him getting in even if there is a bit of mercy factor here given his condition.

Sure, but when you're playing between two of the greatest of all-time somebody is gonna get double-teamed, so who is trying to stop you?

Spaulding has it right. It doesn't hurt anyone to put him in. The Football HoF is weird anyway. How could Tommy Nobis not be in?

I would say both guys fit at about the same rank in the pantheon of their respective sports. They showed up everyday and played pretty well.
