In many ways the Clawmaster is a twisted man with odd thoughts meandering around in his brain at all times, but it does look like Poles realized right away Fields was never going to be the guy and knew he would not be able to put a competent team together until the third year of his tenure, so thought he would just do a two year tank and targeted next year as the year he grabs his QB1 and blows his cap space on top tier FA's on both lines.

Have thought this for a while and it is the only thing that makes sense, does seem he whiffed on Eberflus, but this team was not a real attractive destination when Poles took over, a quality HC was not going to step into that mess, but you will have tons of resources next year which will make it look more attractive and the next HC will look like a genius after the bumbling Eberflus era.

This seems to be the only plausible explanation to the rather docile approach to free agency thus far.

Again mistaking incompetence for "strategy". You don't plan to whiff on target free agents and whiff on a coach and whiff on QB. It means you suck at your job.

Did you all see Javon Hargrave dominating last night? While Hargrave was available in FA, Poles was blowing his FA wad on off the ball linebackers

Never said it was a competent strategy, seems Poles was given the green light from George to tank for several years and Poles felt there was no hope for this season, it is the only thing that makes sense, why else would he pass on paying for the FA's on both lines that were available last year.

Do think he was a bit too smug because the fan base expected at least a competent team and Poles is now definitely feeling a little heat being applied to his backside, and George, guess he felt the fans would be fine with losing.

That's what I'm saying though - why are you assuming he "passed" on those FAs. You're forgetting/omitting or possibly excusing the swing and miss he had with that 49ers o lineman who went elsewhere. That proves he was targeting FAs but failed to nab some of his targets. That's not strategic. It means you failed.

They supposedly would not go past a certain number with a few of the FA's, that certainly is a strategy, he only wanted guys that were a certain age or would only go to a certain number or years with the older FA's.

They also only wanted offensive lineman that fit the outside zone scheme, so smaller and quicker guys, so they passed on a few lumbering oafs who may not have been able to get to the second level like they like, but would at least be able to hold the point of attack.

Did not get, and still do not get why they did not draft/sign a center and another veteran guard/tackle, what made them think Jenkins would stay healthy, and why did they just give the center job to Whitehair?
