So many cold cases are getting solved these days due to the rising popularity of genealogy web sites. They don’t need DNA matches in some FBI database anymore. They go back to the old evidence, extract some perp dna from the crime scene (most notably sex crimes), start an Ancestry account and the list of matches gives the police a road map to the family of the suspect. I watched a show on this a while back. Murderers and rapists who have been skating free and clear for decades are being pinpointed.

tho I think in the Bardstown case the people they are picking up are based on a good ol' fashioned meth-head snitch.

We'll see if they can make the dominoes fall all the way back to the cop killing that started it all.

I guess the theory is that the some cops in the Bardstown PD were dirty (later confirmed by the Chief of Police doing time) and that this Jason Ellis, despite being a former minor league player for the Reds, wouldn't play ball with the corrupt cops so they had him whacked. And then the Crystal Rogers chick found out some incriminating info re: the dead cop and so they had to disappear her. Her dad was getting too close too, so they shot and killed him. the mom and daughter seemed like a message sending to the locals hit by out-of-towners. Cartel brutal killings in that case. Clean up your mess or we'll be coming for your family next.
