At the time, many people thought Mahomes was a typical Texas Tech system QB. I preferred Watson due to the fact Mitch couldn't beat out a guy that couldn't make an NFL roster. The real problem with the Mitch selection at the time was trading up when they didn't need to.

He says they had to trade up. Until 24 hours before the draft, the Browns debated taking (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky or Garrett. The Bears were comfortable with Mahomes if that happened. Once the Browns selected Garrett, they heard through other sources (Not the 49ers) that someone was planning to trade up for (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky, so they made the deal to go up to #2.

I'm disappointed they didn't ask what team was trying to trade up for (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky.

(Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky wasn't a can't miss prospect. Take the consolation prize who probably was Watson but obviously that would have been a different issue.

They had a 2nd round grade on Watson. I actually understand that one. It's one of the reasons I would argue with FF about him not being as good as his stats said he was. It was (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky or Mahomes.

In 2021, they had Wilson and Lance behind the other 3 quarterbacks. It came down to Fields and Mac.

Absolutely. This Lucas just disclosed so much interesting insight into the Bears under Ryan Pace. Very cool stuff.

This might be the best interview the SCORE has ever done.

You can see why teams fail so frequently in the draft, some GM's will always give guys with certain athletic traits high grades and will overdraft guys with limited college experience or production because they arrogantly think that they have coaching geniuses that will be able to coach those guys up.

When it comes to QB there seems to be one painfully obvious fact, guys that cannot read NFL level defenses or refuse to take the easy completions will never get any better, they seem to lack the cognitive ability to understand how to attack an NFL level defense.

It is almost impossible to coach up certain QB's, they are who they are and the rest of the NFL often figures that out before your team does. If you have incompetent boobs at the higher levels of your organization, you will never success because you need someone that can clinically make decisions and move on from mistakes quickly rather than allow a GM/HC to start flailing away trying to save his job. You will be able to find out quickly if your GM is overmatched based on the moves he makes.

Is it cognitive ability or is it instinct? Cognitive ability implies the ability to be taught to improve over time. I suspect that this works at the NCAA power 5 level, but not at the NFL level. At the NFL level, you don't have time to think, you just know.

I don't know, Parkins sounds like a complete asshole and if I was Lucas, I wouldn't have given him anything because of it. The approach of, "this is really bothering me, why did you fuck this up" is really unprofessional. Even though his heart and questions are in the right place, it just comes off bad.

Parkins was definitely in fan mode. We got answers about the process that we would have normally had to wait decades to get. It's one of the most compelling interviews I've heard in a while. It was depressing too.

I thought he was the right amount of forceful and direct. He asked obvious, tough questions without giving Lucas a pat on the head in the process or explaining Lucas’ answers afterwards. And while I don’t think Lucas avoided any questions - I thought he was great too - Parkins followed up when necessary

Him pressing Lucas on why trade up for Mitch if you would’ve been fine drafting Mahomes was great.

another thing that was just jaw dropping for me was when Lucas said Scott Hagel told him on the day he was hired to not listen to the local media. They're telling new hires that on day one. Do they actually think the local media is out to get them? They're a horrible organization, it's not a vendetta. No wonder they don't seem to understand what they're doing wrong year after year after year. They live in a the football version of North Korea.
