Jayson Nix is changing Sox in attempt to rejuvenate his career.

The Rockies' opening day second baseman has agreed to a deal with the Chicago White Sox, according to contract details received by The Denver Post.

With Kazuo Matsui lost as a free agent to the Houston Astros, Nix won the position in spring training, edging out Clint Barmes and Marcus Giles. Nix, however, got off to a slow start offensively and was designated for assignment at the end of April.

He rebounded in Triple-A and was eventually chosen for Team USA in the Beijing Olympics. He was injured in China, hit in the left eye on a bunt attempt against Cuba.

Nix, 26, was the 44th overall selection in the 2001 draft. Nix will make $400,000 if on the White Sox's major league roster.

He hit .125 in 22 big league games. He hit .303 .373/.591 at triple A (in the best hitters park anywhere). A good low risk move who could possibly platoon with Chris Getz at 2B. I wonder of this means Kenny is going to take a pass on Orlando Hudson?

I've got a little news of my own. Ken Griffey, Jr., we hardly knew ye. According to SI.com, Griffey will NOT be offered a contract for next season, likely opening up the #17 for 2009. As for Jayson Nix, the only thing I can figure is that the White Sox have a few roster spots open on the 40 man roster...

SHARK, why did you have to try to upstage Keyser with your own "news?" This thread had nothing to do with your Ken Griffey "scoop."

I think the Sox are really high on Getz. I like what I saw out of him in limited play. He's got speed for one, and god knows the Sox need lots more of that.

True. Or, he hits 20 HRs by the end of August, and BF is calling for a blood test on him.

The guy has some good speed. But I have a feeling we're going to be hearing one of my least favorite cliches next year. "Too bad you can't steal first base..."

He has a lot of speed and is an outstanding defensive player. If the Sox go with Getz at 2B Nix can play when a tough lefty is on the mound. I saw that Uribe will be a type B free agent which means the Sox will receive a sandwich pick if he signs with another team. They will save $4 mil and get a high draft pick. Seems like a good deal to me.

Does he hit leadoff? That's a nice OBP. The Sox have about as nice of a hitter's park as you can get in MLB so are those numbers translatable in any way. How is his glove? The three priorities out of anyone the sox acquire for a regular position this year

1. speed- at least 1-3 type of speed but steals would be appreciated
2. bat control/plate discipline- need guys who know how to bunt, make contact, and hit behind a runner as well as get on base without a hit
3. defense- they had a very nice defensive infield last year, they cannot afford to lose that

Seriously, how the hell do you bunt the ball into your eye? By being bad at bunting, I guess.

the ball hits the surface of the plate and comes back up at a similar speed

I've seen it done before, usually someone will dip the bat when bunting and it will come back towards the face.

Here's the scoop I found:

US batter Jayson Nix was left with a serious eye injury as manager Davey Johnson accused burly pitcher Pedro Luis Lazo of deliberately firing in a dangerous fastball.

"I'm sure he was throwing at his head," Johnson said. "Jayson fouled it off and it hit him in the eye. He's in bad shape. There's a lot of blood, inside and outside of the eye."

With the US trailing 5-3, Nix shifted position to bunt and Lazo hurled a fastball toward him at head level. Nix managed to get his bat in position to protect himself and deflect the Cuban missile slightly, but could not stop it from smashing into his face.

This could be nothing....It could be Kenny looking to go cheap at 2B, and create a spring training battle at 2B with Getz..

Not me. It's the off-season now with the Phillies winning the WS, and this move, while not significant, could end up being a backup IF or even our starting 2B. That may be very depressing by the way.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. Thornton, Floyd and Quentin were all first round picks (Nix was a sandwich pick) that failed to live up to their potential with the teams that drafted them. It's hard to doubt Kenny on his track record with this type of player.

I'm not surprised at either thread. For the most part, there's intelligent baseball discussed here with some ubiquitous jaw jacking on both sides. Baseball will always garner attention in this town... Some of it is even worth noticing.

OK Kenny is a genius, he found a hitch in Jayson Nix's swing and he is ready to turn him into an ALL STAR

Now, reality.

Jayson Nix is a shot in the dark, if takes his "Vitamins" maybe he does become the next great wonder out of nowhere, but did he need to be signed NOW? Is there a line for Jayson Nix's services?

Maybe Getz is a player? but I would assume the Sox are going free agent at the position anyways, maybe Hawk can give me 10 minutes of what a gutsy player he is.

I would also think they need to save some money to make the Pat Burrel deal for him to play 3rd.

Do you remember what you said about Alexi Ramirez when Kenny got him last year, Big Fan? Probably not. It was similar to your Nix comments.

Look, just like Ramirez, even if Nix doesn't work out it's not that much money. No big deal. That's what I said about Ramirez last year.

Now look at what a steal Ramirez is. Sox have him locked up for 3 more years at 1 million per year. 1 million per year!!!!!

Being a Sox fan I can admit Kenny W. got lucky on Quintin, but I give him some credit on Alexi, but even Kenny should admit he did not expect to get a starting SS out of it.

These 2 past successes should in no way reflect on Nix, if you do you are blinded by your Sox pride.
