jeez. don't believe anyone had him penciled in as a key 2023 cub, but this sounds like he'll lose a year to injury, then another year to get back into shape/get his stroke back. going forward, cubs have some guns in the outfield...looks like one less gun for a long time.

First Howard and now Canario. Run the mother fucker over at 1b if he is going to get in your way covering an errant throw.

Mully and Haugh seem to think Abreu is likely to sign with the Cubs. Not gonna happen.

I'm really enjoying the Kap & Gordon Wittenmyer Cubs podcast. Kap isn't stuck on ON like with annoying Hood. These 2 plus Jesse Rogers all are saying the Cubs won't go long term big money. Not counting out like 5 years semi big money. The 2 hosts insist Happ should be re-upped. They play up his power but his numbers are good not great. Do you really want Happ and Suzuki as your corner outfielders clogging things up for the team getting good years? JHK bad contract stink has to have influence on the Cubs FA strategizing. Jesse Rogers on ESPN has been very good too. The Score's Cubs talk is worthless tripe.

l rarely listen to am 1000, listened to hanley for a bit this am. talked about the odds of the cubs landing this ss or that ss. dansby swanson was listed at odds just below correa, but, above bogaerts and turner. ok.

as usual, hanley didn't have a preference, nor exclude any player for whatever reason. his MO, mr. hindsight, will be called in 4 years. "how did that work out for you????"

i definitely don't want swanson, but i believe there's a reason why the odds tell us he may become a cub. it's not because he'll be cheapest of the 4 shortstops (cubs love that), it's because his fiancee plays pro soccer in chicago, and swanson may accept anything decent offered by the cubs. hanley didn't know this or if he did, felt it irrelevant.

anyways, if the cubs are dead-set on getting a ss from the 2022-23 free agent class, i hope it's boegarts.

hanley is talking about the cubs offering abreu a 3 yr deal, with a 3rd year opt-out. he told us the cubs are hesitant on mervis.

Hanley & Zander get some old Score callers talking baseball. I like a Cubs & Sox fan paired as hosts. Usually no "great guy" adulation is a plus.

thanks to mlb network and the mets x nats rain delay, saw canario jack a 2 run homer to center. 417 feet. drove home mervis, who had singled. iowa cubs lose to the cards' AAA team, memphis, 6-4.

Good to see Canario get untracked for at least one game. This is basically his Spring Training. He stands a good chance of competing for the #5 OF spot next year as an Iowa Shuttle rider. (I am counting Morel as a DH-only in this scenario as they won't carry three catchers next year.)

yeah...gomes will be one year older, 36, i think. he's aged well, like fine wine. formerly an easy out, hitting much better than past 2 seasons. contract expires after this season, i believe the cubs will have one more decision to make.

could the cubs pry a catcher in any potential stroman deal? amaya/barnhart combo suit you? cubs sitting on starting pitching potential talent at AAA. keegan thompson, killian, brown, wesneski. if they feel any of those are bona fide MLB pitchers, could feel confident in dealing stroman.

I believe that they have a team option on Gomes and Barnhart has a player option.

Personally, I trade Barnhart on Sunday and pick up Gomes' option when the season ends. Let Amaya catch 70 times and DH 30.

If I'm trading Stroman, it's for a solid 3B prospect, or a 3-way deal with the Rockies where they get the prospects and the Cubs get Ryan McMahon to play 3B for a couple of years.

because he'll be a free agent after 2024 and he won't re-sign with the mets so they want to get something for him while hes still valued

It's Bruce reporting.

I can't imagine what it would take to get him even on a short contract after a "down" year

Why is he not likely to re-sign with the Mets? The Mets are throwing money around.

alonso upset that showalter left the mets. wasn't happy about the mets' sell-off at the trade deadline. upset about getting hit by pitches. not a very happy year for him.

And wasnt the word from their guys that they traded that they were told they are resetting things and basically tanking next year and then planning on starting fresh the following year?

Maybe he shouldn’t have thrown Masyn Winn’s first MLB hit into the stands. :D

yeah, i remember that. last year, lots of bad blood between the two clubs - carried over to this year. the cards' bench is on the 1st base side and they gave it to him. you saw the polar bear telling them that it was his fault. didn't matter much.

he does seem like a baby at times. i've waited for him to fall through the floor with HRs, hasn't happened. credit to him.

New York Post first reported that the Cubs have parted ways with Game strategy coach Craig Driver and bullpen coach Chris Young. Young was the first hire David Ross made when he took over as the teams skipper. The Cubs had a dreadful finish to the season going 7-15 and not making the playoffs. The Bullpen did finished the year ranked 14th in the MLB with an ERA of 3.85.

isn't the field manager suppose to be in charge of game strategy?

Bellinger, Soto and Alonso will make for a pretty good team

JORR's not getting any younger. He probably got confused when the Cubs announced Han Solo bobble head night next year at Wrigley.
