This is not a non-apology apology, as Jurko accurately accused Harry Poppins of this past summer. I was wrong when I bashed Rush, one of my favorite bands while in high school ('75 - 79), for tracks like "Spirit of Radio," "Limelight" and "Free Will." I just watched the Canadian power trio bang out those songs on "Toronto Rocks," the SARS benefit attended by 490,000 in July of '03. I thought all three songs were soulful and all captured the "feel" of what Rush were capable of. Has there even been a three-man band that made more noise while massaging more souls than these Mercury label icons? God bless 'em. I'm sorry. My first concert was a Rush show at the Hammond Civic Center in Feb. of '77. Tonight, I take my 13-year-old rock'n'roll loving son Jack to his first show... AC/DC at the building his oldest brother once called "Rosemizon." I hope Jack's first show was a fraction as good for him as Rush was for me.

Mac, a first concert is a beautiful thing. Mine was Black Sabbath "Mob Rules" tour at THE AMP, with Alvin Lee opening. It was also my first time drinking far too much of the cough syrup known as Southern Comfort.

I'm disappointed in the anticipated set list. Far too much from the new album and Let There Be Rock for my taste:

01. Rock 'N Roll Train
02. Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be
03. Back In Black
04. Stiff Upper Lip
05. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
06. Thunderstruck
07. Hard As A Rock
08. The Jack
09. Hells Bells
10. Shoot To Thrill
11. You Shook Me All Night Long
12. TNT
13. Whole Lotta Rosie
14. Let There Be Rock
15. Highway To Hell
16. For Those About To Rock
17. Anything Goes
18. Big Jack
19. War Machine
20. Black Ice
21. Bad Boy Boogie
22. TBD (to be determined)

To me, The Jack is much like UFO's Rock Bottom - a song of epic musical masturbation, that just goes on and on and on.

Any AC/DC concert without "Shot Down in Flames" is an AC/DC concert I'd sooner pass on.

Enjoy your evening, and look out for those low flying planes.

And ... as you listen to Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, think of our friend Steve-O - and the time he called Coach "Ho" and asked about a dead Rush football player.

The Jack should not be sung by Brian in the first place. They should have retired it when Bonn left us...

Two things:
Picked up Rush LIve in Rio and it is worth a listen. Neil Peart always said they were a "Rosemont Horizon" type band... not a gigantic football stadium band. But somehow this concert really worked for them. They were amazed that the Brazilians new the words to the songs. They weren't planning on making this a Live album, but decided there was so much energy in this three day tour not to record it.

I will be attending my first AC/DC concert tonight. I bought the tickets for me and my wife for my birthday. I can't tell you how excited I am. I haven't seen a big name concert in over 7 years. I'm looking forward to black T-shirts, plastic cups of beer, some quality time with the wife, and some kick-ass riffs from Angus. Bring it.

Same thing could be said for Whole Lotta Rosie

"Back In Black" sold more than 18 million copies, dude. It's among the Top 5 sellers of all time. Guess that squashes the "they should have retired" argument.

Agree on "The Jack" and "Rosie." Too drifty. "Walk All Over You," SHot Down in Flames," "Gone Shootin'," and "Have A Drink On Me" all would be tasty options over some cuts on this set list... but they have many bullets in the magazine, so you're never going to get everything you want.

Anybody who's going tonight... pop into Shoeless Joe's around 6 and I'll buy you a delicious Miller High Life.

Just because 18 million sheep bought "Back in Black", doesnt make it any better than any of the Bon Scott era stuff. Im not hating on it though. "Back in Black" is a solid album. But at least 3/4 of the Bryan Johnson era AC/DC is pure shit.

If we aren't going to the concert, can we still get the High Life?

Same with me. I thought he pissed of Ryan and got a call on the Bat Line to say sorry.

When I was a teen and my peers where listening to Led Zeppelin and Judas Priest one day I listened to 2212 from track 1 on ,both sides of the Album and was amazed . They where my number 1 for all of my teen years , now they are still top 5 .They still seem fresh and a good listen . It is amazing that 3 guys can make so much sound live . Plus the fact that they have Bob and Doug McKenzie intro a soung is a bonus .
Just for the record my top 5 rock bands , not music its a little differant is :
1 Bob Mould/Husker Du/Sugar
2 Metallica
3 Rush
4 Queen
5 the Who

I favor the Bon Scott era also. And it was Bon who did most of the writing for "BIB" before he lost his 15-round battle royale with vodka.

Sheep? Call it what you will. Popularity doesn't always represent quality, I agree. Michael Jackson's "Thriller" was a big mover. I say keep it... but millions of others chose to go the other way.

28 years later, "You Shook Me" remains one of the Top 10 juke box spins in America. And the title track still gets played on every classic rock station in the country. Hard to argue the band's staying power.

Shouldn't most of this be in an AC/DC thread? I thought the topic was Rush.

Getting back to the Rush topic... Limelight and Free Will I say keep 'em. Spirit of Radio was a quality song although the lyrics are quite un-Rush-like... very poppy. I suppose you could say the same thing about The Big Money, but that song is just GREAT in concert. Still hard for me to get into anything from Presto to the current album. I still absolutely love all their LIVE albums. I have an old VHS tape of A Show of Hands... which still takes me back to high school.

My boys current fall asleep music is Rush Gold 2 CD set. Read a book, hug and a kiss goodnight, and the Canadian power trio rocks them to sleep.
I'm more a fan of classical and jazz, but I listen to a fair amount of rock and Rush has a very tight, well orchestrated sound. Plus, I'm not stupid or stubborn... In this case at least.
My kids like rock music and I'm just glad they like something that is pretty good stuff.

I too thought this was gonna be about Hohensee's heroes (how's that for a Rush billboard?).

I can only take Rush in small doses. The less Geddy Lee, the better. I tend to concentrate on the work of Neil Peart. Then I get frustrated as I can never replicate his fills.

Mac, hope you have a great time with AC/DC ticket!

I remember my first show. Iron Maiden on the "Somewhere on tour" tour at Rosemizon 1987.
I was floored by their stage show, but unforunately my cousin and I had side view seats that had obstructed view. It was also the first time I noticed a peculiar smell that was making people a little goofy.

I'm pretty sure "Somewhere in time" came out in 1986 and I saw them in early 1987. I'll have to see if I still have that stub somewhere.
