The more interesting question is who will start at QB. If Bagent performs well and the Bears win, it seems unlikely that Fields will continue as the starter.

That story certainly sheds some light on that quote he made to the coaches about don’t limit the play calls for me I know the whole playbook. Now whether or not he can execute all those plays is another story and also to shouldn’t it be sort of expected that an undrafted rookie should be working hard and learning and absorbing as much as you can? It shouldn’t be that much of an outlier story, they should all be doing it.

Exactly. His work ethic, which as BR notes shouldn't be unicorn-ish but in today's NFL is (see: Kyler Murray)--Bagent's work ethic should keep him around the NFL at least as a backup and maybe someday as a coach/OC.

As far as Sunday night goes, rookie QB's first start on the road, isn't that an automatic L

Eberflus will likely state Fields' hand needs to heal a little more. This is essentially another home game for Bagent. Can he handle the prime time lights?

If he played in the B1G or the SEC or something he may have had more experience with big hostile crowds, but I doubt he played in front of anything more than 5k on the road in D2. Then again it’s LA and nobody cares about the Chargers, so probably a good amount of Bears fans there.

This is the old beauty of sports fandom. Have something impossible out of the blue make you excited and happy. Not you’re a racist pig because Fields wasn’t that great.

This kid sounds excited about making it, but he also doesn't sound like a kid who plans on giving the job back.

If, and this is a big if, Bagent gets you a road win and both he and the offense look good it would seem you stick with him.

Mack plays hard on about 50% of the snaps, he tends to tap out if you hit a few quick passes and make him run laterally for a few plays, he reminds me of the Ultimate Warrior, hits the ring with all kinds of explosive energy, but is gassed after a few max effort plays.

It would seem Bagent is smart enough to recognize the fact that Mack will always come up field and lose outside contain which should open up the quick passing game and easy drop offs to the back, if we only had a TE that could chip and was athletic enough to get out in the flat we could kill them with outside zone runs and checks off to passes into the vacated flat.

This would be a terrible game for Fields as he cannot identify his hot reads and would hold the ball and hero ball around running in circles as Mack tracked him down and forced a fumble or two.

Interesting watching Bagent keep his eyes downfield as he moves up in the pocket and pump the ball to get the DB to committ, have never seen Fields to that, not sure if Fields would know where to throw the ball if the DB came up, and his half second pause would allow the DB to recover.

Kind of sad to see Fields get exposed in this way, do not think he will do well with it mentally.

I like his confidence. He's not afraid to take on new challenges. Very important at this level.

Maybe Fields standing on the sidelines and in the QB room on Tuesday reviewing tape will see Bagent doing all the things FIelds needs to do more/better/at all and come back out in a couple-few weeks a better QB?

Doesn't seem likely and, yeah, the mental/emotional aspects of Fields personality he has displayed publicly to date don't bode well for Fields' future as a reliable starter in the NFL.

It's just as likely Fields doing that as Bagent being a legit NFL QB.

It's going to be fun finding out.

We've seen far worse bears qbs in the last 20 years.

But I'm good. I don't need to see anymore of him or his 33 year old dad

Edit his dad is 47? Good for him, I assumed west virginia

The big difference is the sacks. As of this morning, Bagent is slightly better than Fields. I think when Fields is 100%, you give him a shot and see if he learned anything watching.

This.

I'd feel very good about the position with him as a backup for 10 years. He could go in there cold and not be a pussy.

He's only "good" because he's a two to three year project given his rapid ascent from a guy who struggled with the Colorado School For Mines to a guy who is at worst going to be a quality backup for the next 10 years in the NFL and hopefully a guy who you can win with even if he doesn't dominate. He seems useless throwing it deep though. This may just be because he isn't ready to unleash his inner Jordan Love and chuck it deep and mostly fail all the time.

I'm higher on Bagent than Fields. At this point, we know what Fields is and what he isn't. There is still time for Bagent to develop into something.

That said, Bagent's ceiling is likely lower than tier 1 or2 NFL QB which is really what you need to be a Super Bowl contender.

Regardless, its still a cool story and gives hope to every division II or III athlete out there that they can indeed make it....provided they don't end up with heart problems like half of the big ten football players!
