Gotta think they told him they are spending big this offseason if he is willing to come.

5 years 40 + plus for Counsell.

wow. didn't know hoyer had to be very, very unhappy with the wildcard 'collapse'. what could he have been so upset with? handling of the bullpen? failure to rest certain players? did ross push the envelope playing guys like tauchman and madrigal 'too much'?

we know it's not money, largest contract ($8 million per year) in MLB history for a manager and they may need to continue paying ross.

no use in making this expensive move unless they're plan on going all out for more talent. exciting winter meetings coming up.

I know why he never signed a new deal. The Cubs already had a backroom deal in place.

Yep, tampering again probably.

I guess the Cubs way is to hire a new manager before you even tell your current manager.

They'd have to be...or they're relying on Counsell to pull a rabbit out of his ass/use smoke and mirrors. Actually, it makes you wonder what Counsell would have been able to do with last years team.

Honest question… why is he such a hot managerial hire? Decent regular season teams (in a bad division), but a .368 playoff winning %. First time in playoffs, they went 6-4. Last 4 playoffs since then, his teams are 1-8.

Because he has won consistently where no one else has ever done it. The playoff record is a concern.

as it should be a concern. I fucking hate Counsell. This years Cubs roster was absolutely nothing to get excited about regardless of the manager. This isn't the answer

handling of the bullpen? The fucking bullpen was god awful no matter who managed it.

yeah...there's a reason that hoyer considers counsell an upgrade over ross. maybe hoyer thinks ross overused x and y early on?

Not sure what to say. What has counsel done really. Never got the brewers to the WS.

He may attract FAs. Like Juan Soto ? Othani?

Better then the Sox way of sending a bottle of Jack Daniels to 80 yr old Larussa and begging him to stay awake long enough to manage a couple seasons of shit baseball.

Counsell is one of the best managers in MLB. Cubs rebuild is already far superior to the Sox 10x failed tries. Great time to be a Cubs fan!

i'm thinking the cubs have assured counsell that he can bring over/hire coaches that he wants. that's usually how it works, even more so with a manager poised to earn the richest managerial contract in mlb history.

The one advantage I see immediately w Counsell is he doesn’t treat Latino player like garbage like Ross did.

In the past 5 seasons, Counsell has won the same number of playoff games as LaRussa.
