I always understood the use of "class" in the discussion of civil rights law to be short for "classification", meaning that everyone is protected, ostensibly, from discrimination based on specific forms of classification (race, gender, nationality, etc.). But I've seen so many people discussing the topic—even a few lawyers now including Julie's—use "class" in "protected class" to mean a specific group of people who are protected by these laws (racial minorities and, in this instance, females) that I'm beginning to question whether I've had it wrong the whole time.

Then again, if I'm right, it would be pretty on brand for Julie to hire a lawyer who can so openly misunderstand a basic concept of the law in a court filing.

The type of lawyer who would strenuously object.
