The length of the deal doesn't matter when the only reason he won't opt out is because he's injured or bad. That's security for him, not the Cubs.

I was worried the Cubs would have to go five years plus which is past his prime. I would have been okay with a one year deal too. Hopefully their top minor system will produce cost controlled replacements. This is a bridge guy.

If he wants a better contract he'll have to play well enough to opt out. At 28 his goal is one more mega contract, which he wont get if he's 31 and stunk for 3 years.

I would have been cool with the deal without the player options. There was no reason to give away your leverage

So you think that if this offer was on the table in November, Bellinger would have accepted it? He was hoping for a six + year deal at $25 million + a year. This is a compromise on his part and the Cubs walk away without being on the hook for $200 million +.

Seems like a great deal for both Cubs and Bellinger. I am sure Boras isnt really happy with it as he wanted something way longer with overall money.

Even if Bellinger has another 4ish WAR season I'm sure the Cubs would prefer he opts out. I'm sure one of Peter blah blah blah, Canario or Alcantara can replace the production.(at 1/10th of the cost) This is just what the Cubs wanted and Boras took an L right in the ass. The structure is 30/30/20, and the 20 is there mostly to lower the AAV to keep the Cubs under the CBT. So some of that 20 is hedge for not paying tax this year and possibly paying less tax as a first year payer in 2025. I would expect that the Cubs will have insurance on years 2 and 3 in case of any major injuries worthy of a 60-day IL stint.

What I haven't heard yet is if there is a full or partial NTC. Because if there is no NTC, the Cubs would have the flexibility to trade him over the winter to a team like the Giants if Busch, Morel, and either PCA or Canario all play well in 2024. I just cannot imagine that Bellinger would risk getting traded, and so if there is no NTC then he's going to opt-out after year 1 unless he turns into 2018 Jason Heyward overnight.

Mlbtraderumors.com initially predicted a 12 year $246 million deal for him and then revised it downward to 3 years $90 million when he started lingering:

I thought the cubs would get worse this year under the assumption that their best player was leaving in FA.
