What does the Dairy Queen think about your advanced age?

Impressed I still run a mile in under five minutes.

That’s great no matter the age.

Anything over a mile is a waste of time and a beatdown on the body. It really is a perfect length for some reason. 5280 feet.

It's about pace. If you can maintain the same pace, your body will thank you, and you'll experience the runners high.

Of course. A 5 minute mile is attainable but it isn't optimal. And it's always tempting to go more because you feel good and you're in rhythm.. But it's a waste.

My wife and I are going to meet a dog at a rescue Saturday morning and see if we want to adopt her. I wasn't sure if we would get another dog or if so, how long it would be after putting our last one down a month ago. The house has felt a bit empty and quiet without one and I have noticed that my activity level has diminished quite a bit not having to walk a dog or take one out. It is a bit of a hike to the SW suburbs from where I live but should be interesting to see what happens and if we come home with her.

Great choice! A couple years ago our dog died suddenly in a rather traumatic event and my wife didn't want a dog for a while. That dog was by her side always for the last 8 years and it was really tough on her. But our house felt empty as well and a dog just makes our house feel more like a home. So after about a month we adopted a little hound mix and he's been great. I'm sure he's laying under the blankets next to her right now.

Plans changed slightly and we are going this afternoon to meet a few dogs through a different organization and see if any are a fit for our family. I thought that it would take me longer before we looked again but there is a bond missing for me and something I would like to develop with a new dog. We were considering a younger dog but changed our minds for a few reasons and the dogs we will look at today were relinquished and are older ( 5 or 6 ). I feel like we would be a good home to help an animal enjoy their last 3-4 years of life in a loving environment allowing us not to have to make an 8-10 year commitment. We will see what happens, as I take the decision very seriously. I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your dog and happy that you were able to find the next one and is working out very well. I hope we have the same result.

I see you made a decision, cool

My kid tried out for an AAU team a couple years above his age group and did very well. I'm not sure that I want him to play on the team, though. The coach seemed like a douche and the kids all apparently think they're headed to the NBA. Hopefully we can find a better option for him. He's got another tryout later this week.

I'm not sure what you mean. I'm hoping he's going to play up a year or two in AAU so he can practice and play regularly against older/better players. There are a bunch of tryouts going on now, and he's making the rounds.

You answered my question. Even though you may not want him to play on that team, I assumed you wanted him to play against elite talent to challenge him.

Yeah, I definitely want him to go against the toughest players possible so he can see what he needs to do to keep improving. We're checking out a few teams to see where he'll fit in the best. These AAU teams are kind of strange with all the politics going on.

If you think travel baseball is an insipid quagmire of doochebaggery, wait til you get ahold of AAU. I don't know personally since AAU is summer, but my neighbor brought me over a beer A LOT just to bitch about it.

I have found all youth sports to be plagued by petty politics and rampant douchebags. I try to run my basketball team as fairly and transparently as possible, and parents seem to appreciate that. But our team is the exception rather than the rule.

My older son has been named first alto sax for the regional jazz band in his age group. He beat out a bunch of really good, older players for the spot and has some major solos coming during their concert. He has gotten incredibly good on his instrument. I'm very proud.

The thing about jazz is no one really knows if they're good at it or not because... well... it's jazz.

Oh while it's relevant...

I don't trust anyone who replaces the third in their chords. Kinda sus.

Ok. I hope someone finds that funny.

AAU can be an incredible waste of time if you get on the wrong team.

I hope you get one that works out for your family.

Yeah, I definitely figured that out as I learned more about some of these teams. I think that I've found a pretty good spot for him. Meanwhile, the championship game for the team I coach is this Friday. The kids are very excited.
