According to Fox Sports, Cubs are the front-runner for Peavy and plan on re-signing Dempster:

Peavy's is such a clutch playoff hitter, he's bound to make October '09 different then the past 2 Octobers! Oh, wait...

Frank would be running around with a big ole grin on his face like he was just told he could go to an all you could eat buffet if the White Sox got Peavy.

No he has definitely been banned. He ate there for 4 hours. They said "You been here 4 hour! You go home now!".

That routine still makes me giggle after all these years.

Rosenthal is one of the best but I still think Peavy will end up in Atlanta.

i love the idea of getting peavy - i would NEVER give dempster a 4-year deal, let alone the 5 ive read that he is seeking. not knowing what is involved in a peavy deal, id certainly rather have peavy than dempster in the rotation. that all being said, this team needs a bona-fide lefty power-hitting bat to bat cleanup between lee and ramirez (or whichever righties you want batting 3rd and 5th), in my opinion. i just dont know if they need it bad enough to have soriano in left and adam dunn in right. i keep coming back to adam dunn in my mind, but i just cant make it fit with this team.

This isn't a Pittsburgh salary dump. The cubs will need to give more than spare parts to acquire Peavy.

and unfortunately the cubs dont have any cheap spare parts that anyone would want. i have read that the padres want lots of top pitching prospects, and i think the cubs would have to unload veal, ceda, marshall and a lot more. maybe even a young hitting prospect like vitters as well. i get a kick out of talk about cedeno being added to a deal. who would want him? every organization has a AAA shortstop of their own, what makes anyone think the padres would want him? i know greene is walking, but cedeno brings no value to that package. they want young, talented and cheap, not spare parts, just like KS said. id love to have him, but it is not this teams biggest need.

Ceda is a very highly rated power arm. Then you want to throw in Donnie Veal, who is compared favorably with a young Dontrelle Willis, and Marshall-who looked very good down the stretch and looks like he's ready to start 2009 in a starting rotation and stay there (here, or elsewhere). Thats a LOT to give up. Is Peavy an ace-yes. But you are going to be paying him a lot of money and trading off an awful lot of talent in such a deal. You say "who would want Cedeno"? Well, right now, he's the only real backup SS the Cubs have. He's got a very good arm, some pop in his bat and hit for a decent average (.269). I would say he has value. If they want to aquire Furcal and switch Theriot to 2nd, then it works. Then you can always shift Theriot back to SS if Furcal got hurt. Otherwise they need to sign another backup at short. I like Peavy, but with the money he commands, I wonder if signing him might hamstring the Cubs, preventing them from getting a guy like Furcal or Brian Roberts, who are both legitimate leadoff hitters. If it will not prevent them from doing that, then I would be in favor, despite having to give up Ceda and Veal, who both may wind up being exceptional ML pitchers.

all i am saying is that the padres want a lot of quality prospects to make a deal. cedeno is a utility guy. he has been with the club for several years now, and we have watched theriot blow right by him and take over short, fontenot blow right by him and be the backup 2nd baseman. he is never going to start on this team. sure, he is a decent backup, and i hope the padres want a deal with him included, but players like ronnie cedeno are hardly a hot commodity. his trade value is nothing, he is a throw-in. they want ceda, veal and marshall (all 3 or a combination of at least 2).

MLB teams like Cedeno...don't know why, but they do...given full playing time, he could be good, I think...but I don't understand the infatuation....

sean marshall-a major league left handed starter
cedeno- can start in the majors right now
pie-still a decent prospect
Ceda-young power arm goes right into SD bullpen

I think thats a pretty decent package for peavy.

agreed. it would be mainly for the 2 pitchers though. they have made it clear they want young pitching. whoever offers them the most and/or best young pitching will get peavy. they arent in the market for a utility infielder, but as a throw-in he is fine. i agree about pie, id actually hate to see him go already.

What would be a decent package for Peavy CoF?

It is a good package. 3 major league talents that go right into the lineup and a prospect.

The Peavy deal (to Braves or Cubs) may happen as early as this weekend! Again, they must get a LEADOFF hitter though. If this prevents them from getting a true leadoff man, I hope it does not happen. But hopefully, both will happen.

Elmy I think you slightly overvalue the lead off man issue. Its not a cure all for the offensive suck fest that was the last 6 playoff games.
