But most people don't speak Latin! They just like having spooky sounds wash over them. That or they would prefer to be spoken to in their native language.

The notion that the central ritual of a religion should be incomprehensible to its practitioners is an odd one to say the least.

I don't know that anyone "speaks" Latin today. But many understand it and the simple ritual that is the Catholic mass is quite easy to understand in Latin. And if we all understand it, we can travel anywhere in the world and attend mass and comprehend it.

That's just it. It wasn't incomprehensible. Every Catholic knew and understood it. Whether they were in Boston or Belgrade.

That simply isn't true, nor is it today, nor is a Latin-only mass the position of the Church. You don't like it? GTFO.

It's absolutely true.

Everyone knew Dominus vobiscum means The Lord be with you.

Of course if you stop teaching something less people will know it. Just like cursive. That's probably why Millennials can't read "shall not be infringed" in the Second Amendment.

Educated Catholics likely knew it. Poorly educated working class Catholics did not.

It's not difficult to understand.

Why does everyone like McDonald's? Because you can be in Yakutsk or Irkutsk and when you see the golden arches you know the Big Mac is going to be the same thing you had in your hometown.

The elimination of the Latin mass allowed the franchisees, i.e. parishes, to get sloppy.

The elimination of the Latin mass decentralized power.

Nobody has to be a Catholic. The Church only has the power its members grant it. The Vatican doesn't have an army or the power of taxation enforced by guns. If you don't want to be a Catholic, you don't have to be one. Many have made that choice.

So I'm not sure how decentralizing power, if indeed such has occurred, has helped the Church.

A religion is just a set of beliefs. You don't have to hold those beliefs, but if you don't I can't see how you're a member of that religion. You're just creating a new religion to satisfy yourself.

Cafeteria Catholicism is bullshit. As crazy and destructive as Islam is, at least Muslims have principles.

Agreed. Those championing Latin mass, which is not a core tenet of the Catholic Church, should get out.

It's tradition- or was tradition. And what is a religion if not a collection of rules and traditions?

Tall Midget wrote:
Right. And the rules are not on the side of those demanding a return to Latin mass.

The Latin mass is here. And it is not going anywhere.

I've never participated in a latin mass, but the liturgy of the word is still performed in the local language, from what I saw on youtube. That is where people receive most of their instruction.

The liturgy of the eucharist is in latin and is almost entirely repetitive, week after week, so it is accessible in the same way you would learn at school.

but its my understanding the latin mass is about more than being partially in latin.

Latin Mass is a lightning rod within the Catholic Church. Especially in the US where it has become quite popular in some cities, (St John Cantius-Chicago) for instance.

It is the battleground of changes in the Church that liberal vs traditional Catholics so to speak, argue or fight over constantly.

The board's biggest Latin mass supporter ever would surprise you.

My guess is JORR.

It's not too late for JORR to join us on Team Catholic. From what I understand all we have to do is repent as we die. That's my plan at least. As I see the piano falling from the 15th floor to crush me I'll throw out a "My bad on all the bad things I did".

I just sat there, zoned out, and counted down the seconds until it was over when I regularly attended mass, so it might as well have been in a different language.

I was referring to Regular Reader.

But send me your Venmo by PM and I'll buy you a beer out of our membership fund.

JORR usually spends it on cheap scotch or bad shoes.

If I hadn't gone to a Catholic school, I probably would have ended up dropping out--or getting kicked out--of high school.

At my age it was a tough job to get kicked out. They would beat us though.
