Everyone but the White Sox is a near playoff team with expanded playoffs. The Cubs were a "near playoff" team last year, they will be a "near playoff" or possibly a playoff team this year. That doesn't mean that they full force putting their max resources out there to win. It would be fun if the Cubs made the playoffs, I would enjoy that. I enjoy the entertainment the Cubs give me on a near nightly basis. That doesn't mean I have to blindly believe in the face of demonstrable evidence that ownership is fully committing all possible resources to the product on the field.

The Cubs have essentially the same payroll in 2023 as they did in 2019. That tells you all you need to know right there. For fucks sake the White Sox have a significantly higher payroll in 2023 than they did in 2019.
