I'm surprised this list wasn't published in Rolling Stone....it's a pretty flawed list, as you'd expect from Rolling Stone.
https://www.merchoid.com/americas-ultim ... ock-bands/
If their intention was to interview kids who don't even know what a "Dad" is or what "Rock" is....they succeeded. My $.02 is that Bon Jovi, Coldplay RHCP, and Nickelback are mor Mom Rock.

I'll also maintain AC/DC and Metallica HAVE to be on the list.

10. Limp Bizkit
9. Bon Jovi
8. Coldplay
7. Guns 'n' Roses
6. Linkin Park
5. Nirvana
4. Red Hot Chili Peppers
3. 2. (tie) Van Halen / Blink-182
1. Nickelback

Imagine Dragons need to be on that list.

Nickelback should not be #1 on any list.

Not sure what stratification is, but this sounds pretty airtight.

Methodology
We conducted an online survey of 3,000 adults, carefully selected to represent a balanced mix of age, gender, and geography. To ensure our sample accurately reflects the population, we used internal data sources for comprehensive population data. Our approach involved a two-step process: first, we employed stratified sampling to capture diverse demographic groups, and then we applied post-stratification weighting to fine-tune the results for representativeness.

Steely Dan is the ultimate dad rock. That shit doesn't make sense until you turn 40. Also, sadly, Pearl Jam has entered the dad rock pantheon.

Steely Dan made sense for 40 year olds 30 years ago. Vedder was dad rock in the aughts.

Today’s dad rock is like, Fallout Boy and maybe Florence and the Machine, depending on whether your dad is a biological female.

I thought about this for awhile before posting in the thread.

"Dad Rock" isn't simply music that old guys listen to. It's music/bands that old guys think are hip but that young people who understand every aspect of the Drake/Kendrick beef would laugh at or cringe over.

For example, Led Zeppelin is not "Dad Rock" though old guys love Zeppelin. Zeppelin is objectively cool. Even the hippest twenty year old has to reckon with the fact that Robert Plant could still fuck his girlfriend.

Steely Dan isn't "Dad Rock" either. No one ever thought Steely Dan was cool or hip. Well, maybe Don Tiny or WXRT- Chicago's Purveyor of the Finest Dad Rock.

"Dad Rock" is Wilco, Ryan Adams, and- I know this hurts, CH, Radiohead.

Ryan Adams AND Bryan Adams are Dad Rock.

Radiohead? No. Wilco? Possibly. But mostly "Summerteeth" and "Sky Blue Sky".

If you're talking about trying to sound hip, when you're clearly not, you'd try to sneak in Greta Van Fleet.

An actual band of dads, just as an aside, is Maritime.

Radiohead is on the Mount Rushmore of Dad Rock.

Who the fuck even listens to Greta Van Fleet unless it's being pumped through the sound system of a big box store?

Why would a dad listen to "In Rainbows" or "Kid A"? I mean maybe a Dad would *say* they do, but I can't see it. It's like if a Dad said they listened to TV on the Radio. No way would I believe them. And I'm not getting in that van.

But what Van would they speak to? Greta Van Fleet.

I'm a Grandpa. or Dad squared. There isn't a band (ok Greta) listed in this thread that I don't listen to...it's all about music on shuffle.

And not for nothin, I put this recently dropped awesome track by Chicagoan Lupe Fiasco in another thread

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_brIj-go8U

father knows best

Hootie and the Blowfish? Now THAT is a Dad band.

And, Live. I gotta believe that's a Dad Band.

And Dad songs, "I'll Be". Edwin McCain.

Because he think it's cool.

Also, if a band plays at FitzGerald's you can guarantee it's Dad Rock.

I disagee. No one thinks they have "cred" because the listen to Hootie. "Dad Rock" is about listening to something you think is cool that most others don't listen to. There is a hipster element to it. Hootie is mainstream pap.

By definition dad rock must be over the air radio. No “dad” is Apple Music or equivalent.

You're right in parts and wrong in parts. Wilco, absolutely, but Radiohead, no. You can put on Summerteeth -- or Tom Petty's greatest hits, or The Joshua Tree, and most definitely Brothers in Arms -- while sitting outside on a nice summer day, maybe grilling some delicious kebabs. You can't put on Amnesiac or even The Bends.

Ryan Adams's 2014 s/t is maximum dad rock. Ryan Daddams. Crunchy, but thoughtful riffs.

Yeah but Hipster Dad would be wearing an Umphree’s McGee shirt or some under wrist tattoo.

I’m thinking of just regular dad. You know like when you mentioned backyard BBQ and Foo Foghters.

Hipster Dad is another kind…I could buy that for Radiohead. And, They Might Be Giants.
