They can pay it.

Once again, based on your logic, every first round draft pick would get 100% of their payout right away.

It makes little sense to overpay a rookie on a signing bonus.

It also makes little sense not to have your two top ten picks signed and in camp when it starts.

You don't overpay anyone just to get them in camp however. That makes little sense.

I'm glad you are all so concerned about a 5 billion dollar franchise, keeping their balance sheet healthy. In the meantime the Bears are about to be (again) the laughing stock of the NFL going into Hard Knocks with two top 10 picks unsigned.

Yes there is. A piece of the franchise

Well that isn’t possible so he isn’t planning on playing.

To get a head start on class work. MANY are afraid to ask "stupid" questions in front of veterans.

Both should have been signed long ago. As soon as the Bears secured the #1 overall pick, legally they could start negotiating. As a fan I find this unacceptable.

Why do you care? It has zero impact on anything. If they start holding out, you will have a reason to be pissed.

Relax, Junior. They are trying to find a balance between how much will hit their cap and his guaranteed money.

Seven players still have not signed their contracts from the 1st round.

The following is a list of 2024 NFL Draft first-round picks who have yet to sign their rookie contracts:

1st overall: Caleb Williams, quarterback, Chicago Bears
8th overall: Michael Penix Jr., quarterback, Atlanta Falcons
9th overall: Rome Odunze, wide receiver, Chicago Bears
10th overall: J.J. McCarthy, quarterback, Minnesota Vikings
17th overall: Dallas Turner, edge defender, Minnesota Vikings
18th overall: Amarius Mims, offensive tackle, Cincinnati Bengals
31st overall: Ricky Pearsall, wide receiver, San Francisco 49ers

With exception of 49ers all dumpster fire organizations

Isn't he technically a hold-out if they don't work this out today or would that only be after veterans arrive later in the week?

Either way, this should not be a difficult negotiation. Get it done.

Saturday would potentially be a deadline, but I'm not sure if they can choose to practice without a signed contract.

Aren’t these contracts basically predetermined, that is why for most it is a rubber stamp.

The amount of money is slotted. There are basically three issues:

1- timing of payments
2- offset language if player gets cut and signs with another team
3- voiding of guarantees for contract violations

Why have 29 other teams been able to resolve these issues while the Bears appear to be floundering?

Falcons, Vikings, Bengals, and 49ers also have not signed their first round picks. And Panthers, Browns and Texans did not have first round picks in 2024.

The Bears are going to Bears. No way he reports tomorrow without a contract.

Quarterback Caleb Williams isn’t handling his contract negotiations with the Bears. Unless he is.

Over the weekend, Williams said regarding his rookie deal, “I’m not handling that. My lawyers and attorney and everybody, the head of the Bears, everybody up there up top is handling that. That’s not my position that I’m handling.”

Since Williams isn’t represented by an NFLPA-certified agent, the Bears aren’t permitted to negotiate with anyone but Williams. According to an NFL spokesperson, the Bears have told the league that they’re not talking to any third parties.

“Your read on Article 48 [of the Collective Bargaining Agreement] is correct,” the league told PFT via email. “The team, however, confirmed to the league that it is only speaking to the player.”

So either someone is telling an inaccurate story, or the Bears think they’re negotiating with Williams when they aren’t. The most common workaround for self-represented players who really aren’t representing themselves is to create an email address that is ostensibly the player but is actually someone else. (In at least one situation, the cover was blown when the player responded to an email from the team — while the player was on the practice field.)

Regardless, something isn’t lining up. And the situation isn’t working out. Williams, the first overall pick in the April draft, is one of only five first-round selection who have not signed, and the Bears’ rookies report tomorrow.

The Bears have zero leverage here. They have to give Caleb whatever he wants.

Williams got the exact same contract adjusted for being one pick higher that Jayden Daniels got 4 weeks ago. So, Williams didn't have any leverage either.

So basically (formality) paperwork took 4 months. I'm sure they will get stadium done.
