Did Spiegel ever work with Bernstein such that he would call him a “partner?”

I’ll have to assume he was talking about Jason Goff there, relentless logician that he was.

It was nice to not have to use logic when working with you is like an insult to both the person stating it and the person he is saying it to.

If the Score brings back Goff in any capacity, I am out. He is a disgraceful, racist, and adds nothing to a show. Maybe Mitch thinks he needs the DEI points, but be very careful. Goff will bring the entire station down.

I have said this before, but for folks who like sports, it would be a tough existence to be racist given the percentage of pro athletes that come from minority communities. Sure many will cheer for the one white NBA player on the floor, but if you were truly racist, you would not watch the NBA or NFL.

Goff was the last chance for the Score to get back to its roots. He was a populist who took calls and could have fun even with callers who disliked him. His early shows also had good production value. He spoke to truth to power, ridiculing Bernstein for his goofy notions.

Then, when given his big opportunity, he decided to mimic the Bernstein style rather than reject it for his own voice. It might have seemed like the smart move because Bernstein was the face of the station at the time. He didn't really read the market though, as Dan was unique in that he regularly underperformed in ratings but was still beloved by certain management. There was an opening in the market for the populist style as all the Score originals were aging or self destructing. As you can see, it is a style that has made some talent incredibly wealthy in the years since Jason tried to attach his star to Bernstein.

Dan straight out told him he wasn't going to help him in his career. Goff should have believed him

Goff thought he could be the next Bomani Jones, except:

1. He's not nearly as smart or quick-thinking as Jones, and

2. Jones never lasted more than two or three years in any of his major radio/SirusXM gigs. The only time he lasted longer was being attached to Dan Le Batard on Highly Questionable, where he played the straight man to Papi.

No. That link gd posted was not directed at Bernsie. he would never refer to him as a partner. Now that may change soon.

There's a dedicated base of people who remain lurking here if only to troll around and wait for the "I don't ever listen, but..." or "I'm done listening" post(s) so they can chime in with that amazingly insightful and conversation-forwarding thought/reply.

Fried egg, Goff mourners as the yolk. Everyone feels bad about Jason Benetti, but only reeeeeaaaallll media circlejerkers still aren't over Jason failing up to TV.

I started this thread and honestly have not listened to a single moment of the show since. I saw it on twitter. Have seen twitter videos of Dannys last day, etc.

I said it from the start, he was the most talented and would go National. I was right and in a free oven mitt for that take!(The Jerk).

I will probably start listening to the score and espn 1000 more in September when regular season football starts up. Not into baseball.

In regards to replacement, has to be tough. AM radio has to be a dying industry with podcasts, social media, etc.

I would do what they did for Parkins and go out of town and bring in an up and comer. No one would want to hear Mac, Goff, etc. I would think.

Only in town guy
maybe Chief from Barstool,

None of the Barstool people would ever jump ship to work for 670 or 1000. Aside from what I said earlier about radio being a dying entity where the end of locally produced content is always a possibility, you're leaving a safe job where you can have fun, say shit, and have opinions with no consequences. The minute you make one joke about porn video awards, you're tossed out with the trash like Danny Mac.

One wrongthink opinion and you're fired in radio. Dave will never fire one of his guys for that and that's a freedom you can't buy.

Yeah, bringing in someone from Barstool makes no sense for the Score. I think at this point they've chosen to grow old together with their audience, or had that choice made for them.

I really think it's Goff coming back. Mitch never fired him. He's coming back and he's going to be really annoying about it.

do you have any idea what those local barstool guys make. It seems like a top heavy organization but I have no idea.

I could see the locals doing terrestrial appearances like big cat, as long as it doesn't conflict. They really should be looking to parlay what they have into something bigger.

I'm not sure how much they make, but I know they all left professional white collar jobs for it so it has to be at least in that ballpark.

I think the biggest issue with going to a legacy media company is that you have next to no job security. Audacy killing 880 in NY has to make you feel that no station under their purview is safe from a job killing switch to syndication or a new format.

Aside from the constantly worsening economics of local radio, there is the fact that 1 wrong tweet gets you fired from the uptight people who run those stations. Just ask Danny Mac how that worked out for him. They will never get fired for a tweet that offends or pisses someone off so long as they work for Dave Portnoy.

I'd look to Kirk Minihane's journey as a case in point for why leaving legacy radio for a place like Barstool makes sense. He left an Audacy station in Boston for Barstool and hasn't looked back. He has been pretty open about the problems of always having to watch what you say in that environment he came from. I don't see why anyone in 2024 would leave a place like Barstool for traditional radio.

Sounds like Jason Goff will be back on the air soon lecturing the audience on his racial identify and smothering any conversations with his laughing.

It would be nice to use this opportunity to start over, but they are doubling down on being a liberal/social justice sports radio station.

Did the Sun Times really say that the Score is considering pairing Holmes and Goff?? Certainly management is not that clueless. Bringing Goff back is an awful idea, but teaming him with Holmes would lead to failure of the entire station. Who would possible want to advertise on the Goff and Holmes show??

That would be great. Put those two in a containment show instead of infecting the rest of the lineup.

The rest of what lineup? They have no one at the score worth listening to every day. Goff, Spiegs/Bernstein/Holmes. Any combination is going to suck.

He's the only person in Chicago sports media who has raised a black son! He should be friends with the mayor.

Fair point. I only really enjoy Bernstein during Bears season. I would like him to be freed from the soul sucking neutron star that is larry. If the only way to do that is to turn middays into an audible Chernobyl and concrete it off from the rest of the world, that's fine.

The simplest move is just slotting him into the afternoon show. He's already had a failed show with Bernstein. I guess the only person Bernstein hasn't paired with yet is Spiegal so anything is possible when you're just re-shuffling the deck.
