Kevin Gregg lead the NL with 9 blown saves don't know much about Ceda. Most Cubs prospects are suspects!

Does this signal the end for Kerry Wood?

I don't think so, so perhaps he becomes a set-up man...

I think they're just replacing Howry with a younger version of him.

Now that would be good with me.

Bernsie just described him as a better Kyle Farnsworth.

Based on the soundbyte they just played of Hendry on MJH, it sounds like Wood will be pitching elsewhere next year. :(

I put a 12 on Woody signing with the cubs in the free agent frenzy pool. Damn-knit!

edit: I actually had him at 15.

I won't believe it until he's in another jersey...I don't like the guy, but I think he still wants to be a Cub...

i think it may be a pretty smooth move for the cubs to let dempster and wood walk, more with wood. dempster has proven he is over his injuries, and has been durable. wood however, may be a good case of the cubs getting out while the getting is good. he had a fine season, he proved he could pitch often and for the most part effectively. they finally have him somewhat healthy. i dont feel confident enough that he will hold up, when push comes to shove. if someone else has the money, i think the time is right to cut him loose, if the price is too high. dempster, too. i wouldnt be ready to throw 4+ years at dempster for that kind of money.

i like both wood and dempster, but neither one of them seem like "oh my god we have to sign him" kind of guys to me. id like to see both back, but im not desperate for either.

Hendry sure sounded like Wood was done on his interview on B&B.

Now,... I'm pretty sure Hendry will go out and sign Mark Prior to a 1 year incentive based contract. Wood will get a nice contract somehwere. He did a good job last year in his first stint as a closer. Cubs have Gregg who can close & obviously Marmol as an option too. There will be more moves where the Cubs bullpen is concerned.

i agree with the "Cubs have Gregg", not so sure on the "who can close" part. marmol is probably going to be handed the job, and gregg likely will be the lead-in. i dont mind this trade at all, especially if they saw the writing on the wall with wood. gregg may not be a great closer, but he is a pretty good bullpen arm, he can get big-league hitters out. i hope they accumulate several other bullpen guys. the pen needed some fresh blood.

I can see Kerry ending up either in Texas or......Milwaukee!
Both have a HUGE hole to fill in the bull pen. I hate to see him go.

Sucks to see Wood leave. Hope he signs with a good team, like the Rays.

I am going to enjoy watching your Cubs if Gregg is their closer.

If Wood was so good he would have gotten some saves in the last 2 playoff series.

Wood can go because you know he is going to get hurt next year, it just has to happen. Wish him luck and all that, but the guy got a lot of money from the cubs for sitting on the DL, so I think he either agrees to a two year contract or cya.

This had to be done, just because based upon Wood's performance last season, he is likely to get a 2-3 year offer. Hendry would be foolish to match such an offer, based on Kerry's injury hisyory. Marmol moves to closer, Gregg is a set-up man. They still need another late inning guy, as Howry should be gone too. Although if they keep Jeff Samardzija in releif, maybe he takes on that role. I hope Kerry prospers somewhere else and can stay healthy (just not in Milwaukee) as well. But the risks were just too high.

Gregg will be the Cubs closer going into next year, not Marmol. Only thing that would keep Gregg from not being the closer would be if the Cubs acquired someone else. Marmol too valuable with his rubber arm to be restricted to just closing.

Anyone who thinks Marmol should be the closer just doesn't know baseball.

I can see him going to Texas (going back to where it all started) but I'd really hate to see him end up in Milwaukee. It would pain me to have to hope for an injury if he signed with the Brewers.

Doesn't Mariano Rivera have a "rubber" arm as well? How has he fared as a closer? How many of his saves are for pitching longer than one inning?

I am not worried were Wood ends up because I am convinced he spends most of the next 3 seasons on the DL, just a gut feeling. Yea its a hole to fill, but it shouldnt be hard to do imo.

i cant say i disagree with you as far as marmol maybe being best suited for the setup man role, last year i thought they did the right thing letting wood close, due to his injury history and marmols ability to pitch multiple innings. this year, in my eyes, he is clearly the best man for the job, and it would be shocking to see a guy like gregg come in and close games.

anyone who makes a statement like that has much too high of an opinion of ones own baseball knowledge.

It's interesting that Wood is now saying that he would have considered another 1 year deal to stay with the Cubs. If that's true, Hendry should try it. Then Gregg could simply be put into Howry's role and the rest could stay the same. I suspect that Hendry just wanted to move on, fearing that the baling wire and bubble gum used to hold Kerry together last season, might not work for another season. But it seems like it would be a worthwhile risk, on a one year deal.

If Woody is interested in a 1 yr deal to stay in Chicago Kenny should give him a call.

i agree - i cant understand why, if what wood says is true, the cubs wouldnt throw a 1-year deal at him. originally i was figuring that he must have wanted a 2 or 3 year deal, and that is why they were letting him walk. wood, marmol, gregg and samadzija would seem to be a pretty solid start at a good pen. kind of makes you wonder why they couldn't hammer out a 1-year deal. i would keep giving him 1-year deals as long as he produced and agreed to that.
