yeah, pat hughes and elise are on board, making excuses for the 3 months the offense was in a toilet with a tree growing around the bowl. the guys care, when 1 or 2 guys are slumping, they try too hard to pick up the extra slack. ok.

cubs would actually be 4 out; even if the braves lose tonight (likely, nola pitching for phl) - the braves have the tie-breaker over the cubs. the mets have the tie-breaker over the cubs. the padres have the tie-breaker over the cubs. cubs x dbacks (season series 3x3) would go to the 2nd tie-breaker (intra-divisional record).

While underwhelmed generally with the offense the reason they probably fall short is the bullpen being total ass the first seven or eight weeks. Easily let five or six wins slip through our fingers.

so...the cubs make up those '3' games with atlanta and the season ends. who makes the playoffs?

braves have the tie-breaker. cubs are in reality, 4 games out.

no doubt, the bullpen was terrible, for awhile. have cleaned up their act the past 2.5 months.

carson spiers, spot-starter, pitcher on the disappointing reds. season ERA? 5.35. the 2024 cubs hitting against spiers? 10.2 innings, 0 runs, 5 hits. for some 3 months, cubs hitters made garbage look like cy young award winners. here is the classic example.

how has pittsburgh done against spiers? 16 innings pitched, 17 hits, 7 runs. the brewers? 11 innings, 17 hits, 14 earned runs. don't need to see nico pound 2 hoppers at the ss and fansby strike out, against this garbage.

I mean, you can dress this pig up all you want but the bottom line is that there are a lot of bad hitters in that lineup. That’s why they sucked for 2 1/2 months. Right now they’re having their blind squirrel / nut stretch against a bunch of bad pitching.

The most average SS in history has come alive to make a run at the back of the baseball card. And it's become contagious.

I'm really hoping the Cubs don't finish in 7th place in the division again because they spent all offseason last year bragging about it and I can't deal with it again for a whole offseason.

Not good.

Also have 9 games remaining against the Yankees, Phillies and Dodgers of their remaining 24 games.

The Braves do have 4 vs. LA, 3 vs. NYM and 3 vs KC.

Cubs are still alive, but they would need to go 7-2 in that stretch and pretty much near undefeated against everyone else.

Not good.

Agreed. It would be different if the Cubs were young and cheap.

F that. The Cubs are trying to win within the constructs of the punitive competitive balance tax. They went out and got a top manager and have spent close to the cap. They have what is considered to be a strong farm system. It is a team trying to win in a world where the Dodgers are blessed with insane levels of talent. And that being said, the Brewers are doing it without the payroll. Oh well.

Dodgers are getting it done with Penthouse Pets, while the Brewers are also getting it done with central Wisconsin trailer park dairy queens.

He’s said Cubs are gonna be over the tax level this year. Most likely because of Bellinger. That is why they secretly tried to get someone to claim Smiley. If he knew they would be about over they should have gone way over.

Pitchers trained to go 5 innings means no hitters are a thing of the past, like complete games. This was nothing more than a shutout.

Reality setting in for Cubs’ playoff hopes. If the Mets or Braves go just 11-11 down the stretch, the Cubs have to go 16-6.

It's possible, I guess...but Cubs really need to go like 19-3 to have a realistic chance.

We were watching one of the last Cubs Pirates games in Wrigley the other night. The modern fan must be smarter because my wife asked where are all the fans?

Ironic on Rizzo adulation day at Wrigley he's been bad money with the Yankees .739 ops and living on the IL always hurt.
