How does LSU (and OSU) replace top of the draft WR, with more top of the draft WR, every single year. No one else has that kind of consistent greatness at a position.
OSU is spending like $20 million on players this year. So, the same way they've done it for decades.
Yup, friends of the program have been paying players for decades, the NIL stuff just brings it out into the open.
It does seem that the NIL and transfer portal dudes do not always immediately gel together and that some may not get at all. Transfer portal also is beginning to expose some of the supposed genius college coaches as nothing more than used car salesman. They cannot just stack rosters with talented guys because talented backups transfer elsewhere.
Plenty of blank stares from a few FSU and Colorado transfer portal dudes after they were trucked by zero star offensive lineman.
Guess the college coaches have to be careful not to spend all the NIL money at QB, WR, and CB...seems you still need a few guys that can block.
Wonder if the existing roster stars get their NIL deals renegotiated after the boosters back up the Brinks for a xfer portal hotshot. If you've played well a season or two at another school, you'll have multiple programs bidding for your services at the current going rate++. usually a lower school/vertical move up the ranks, horizontal xfer portal moves are almost always guys who didn't get playing time and want a shot at improving their NFL stock at another program.
Maybe Dabo has it right. Sure, Georgia (eventually) rolled Clemson, but Georgia could give the freaking Carolina Panters a game (for a quarter...maybe). See how Clemson does against occasional giant-killer App State tonight.
I think the transfer portal and esp NIL motivated Saban's retirement. Strangely for Ohio State (who no doubt have ∞ $$$'s to spend on players) xfer portal combined with NIL might be what flipped the script on OSU and Michigan. I'd think a HC with NFL experience would relish having the ability to reload their roster with experienced players for a price.
But, yeah, I don't think much changed in terms of amount of $$$'s flowing to the players in NIL era vs pre-NIL for the Buckeyes.
