I think it's just the feel of it. It's not like any of the courses I've played are actual links golf. There really isn't much difference in the type of shots played, other than maybe needing a punch under a tree more often on the parkland style. Don't think I've hit a shot all summer where I was standing in the fairway, and the best shot was to bump and run the approach shot into a green, and trying to avoid a deep pot bunker... I also prefer the look of large areas of native plantings and natural water edges over acres of turfgrass rough that need to be mowed/sprayed/maintained constantly.

That's interesting. We have a course a little bit like that up here called Shepherds Crook that kind of reminds me of a links course. There are only a few holes where trees even come into play. I think you would like that one. The best links type course I've played has to be Erin Hills.

I am old school tree lined golf course guy myself, love playing in The Carolina’s and Georgia. Back when you could move the golf ball easier, I loved how you could see the shape of the hole and then conform your shot to that.

Heading down near the Quad cities for a little Sunday/Monday trip. Playing TPC Deere Run on Sunday and Fyre Lake Golf Club on Monday.

I've never played Deere Run, so I am excited about that. Been there for the John Deere once but never played. Fyre Lake is in the middle of nowhere (actually right by my farm) and I played it when it first opened. They didn't even have a clubhouse yet and I remember liking the layout. Some guys at my club were talking about how much they like it so I am excited to go back now that it has matured a little bit. Bonus: I can drive by and check on my crops!

TPC Deere Run was a much harder course than I anticipated. It looks so much easier on TV lol. On the 8th hole I said to the guys this is a really hard course, and the guys on tour eat this place alive - and shoot 20-25 under playing it 800-1,000 yards longer. And that's the "B-team" of PGA players. They play a different game than we do.

Crazy to think that one of the guys on the PGA Tour shot 59 there earlier this season.

Shepherds Crook is on my list to try.

My "bucket list" trip would be to spend a couple weeks in Scotland/Ireland/England doing a golf/sightseeing tour.

Maybe I can get Sir Nick Faldo to plan it for me....

As mentioned earlier in the thread my main driver is semi-broken and I have gone to using a ten year old Titleist driver I bought as a backup this past offseason. I was looking around last night at Callaway Pre-Owned which I've had a lot of luck with and bought all three of my hybrids from there at reasonable prices. No interest in spending $600 or more on a new driver so actually stumbled upon a place where you can buy new and used Titleist equipment called Titleist Certified. Place looks legit and they sell all clubs other than putters. I'd assume their available stock will go up now that the season is winding down. I have heard great things about the GT drivers but no way I am spending that kind of money so looking at the TSR2 which is also a really nice driver. I was finding them in the loft and shaft configuration I'd like for around $329 which I can stomach.

All depends on the condition evaluation to me when I shop used like that. Mostly I think deals are great but last year or so prices for used are higher. Like everything I guess?

Everything I have gotten from Callaway Pre-Owned has come to me looking brand new even when I bought average condition. I used to just go to Golf Galaxy or PGA Superstore and check out their used stuff on a semi-regular basis after the season was over, but I am a solid 40 minutes from either of those stores and it is a crap shoot what they might have. At this point in my golfing life I pretty much know what I am looking for and don't need to hit balls into a net or get fit for something. As long as the club isn't beat up or have a bunch of sky ball marks on the top of the head I'm generally not too worried about the conditioning. These websites have just made it easier to find what you are looking for, probably at a slightly higher price as you mention, but more convenient. If a driver lasts me 4-5 years at $330 dollars I'd call it a win.

Hawg, have you ever played Fire Ridge up in Grafton? I think it used to be called CC of Wisconsin way back when. I have an outing there next week and was looking for some intel. My buddy I play with regularly said it was a decent course.

Yes, I have never been a fan but it is for a variety of reasons. It has gotten significantly better or was the last time I was there,

What didn't you like about it? My buddy said that it gets tight in spots but he hadn't been out there in a long time. Playing as a scramble I won't be too worried about playing my own ball.

They went thru many owners and there was a time when it was really shitty for what they were charging, it pisssed me off. You will have fun playing a scramble there.

Kind of a fun course for a scramble and they had us moved up a few tee boxes so that helped make it a bit easier. The layout was really nothing special and very frustrating as they didn't have GPS in the carts and it was very poorly marked in the fairways. Took about 5:15 to play which is ridiculous but I have played in a lot slower scrambles over the years. Greens rolled pretty nice and were quick at least, although I didn't make a putt all day long. My teammates were very poor golfers but fortunately I was hitting fairways and greens and they were making putts. We shot -7 and left a few out there that were definitely makeable. No idea what won as we had to leave right away to try to beat traffic back south. We heard someone in the parking lot say they were at -8 so had no issues packing up and going after hearing that.

Looked at the forecast for Sunday and decided "nope". The course I like that's also only a few minutes from my house had a spot for a single at 8am tomorrow. Done around noon, and the weekend of college and NFL football is available from the couch....

Probably a good choice. I hadn't planned on playing yesterday but my buddy was at the course here in town that was closed for an outing tomorrow and the pro told him he would let us out at 7am if we could be done by 10. We should be able to finish by 9 as the course is pretty short. Looks like we will be able to get our round in Sunday before any precipitation as well.

Yesterday kind of sums up my summer. Playing really well tee to green. When putting, might as well use a hockey stick.

9/14 fairways hit
15/18 greens hit (hit all 4 par 3’s)
37 putts……

Shot 76 (+4)

The Grint app breaks down the stats that get put in as i play
Overall index:1.6
Scoring:0.0
GIR:+0.5
Scrambling:+0.7
Driving:+1.0
Approach:+1.0
PUTTING:7.6…

I got out on Sunday and knew we would have a chance to finish before the weather. We took off at about 6:45 and got to #16. We teed off and we saw lightning driving to the balls. My buddy asked what I thought and I mentioned that lightning wasn't too good. We each hit one more shot, it promptly struck again and we headed in. About 300 yards from the parking lot it started raining pretty good. We through the stuff in our cars and I promptly left. By the time I was half a mile from the course it was coming down in sheets. I had to run my wipers at full speed for about 15 minutes driving home.

Fall golf is officially upon us. Hard to believe it will be October next week. I generally enjoy fall golf other than trying to find your golf ball among the leaves. Rounds 60 and 61 for me this weekend. If the weather holds it looks like I'll get as many as 11 more rounds in this season. If I can hit 70 that is probably a pretty decent number to get to. My average for the year is 77.16 so up 1/2 a stroke from last year which seems right to me. Not a lot of rounds missed because of weather and the season started earlier than usual with the first round in late February and consistent play starting end of March. Hope everyone has enjoyed their own season. Best shot of the year for me was holing out of a bunker from about 100 yards out in early April.

I have a business meeting next week up in Milwaukee and the customer invited me and another guy to play his private club afterwards so we will take him up on that. Should be a fun time.

Thanks for the reminder to buy a dozen "fall" golf balls. I hate losing $4 Pro-Vs in the leaves. In the colder weather you want a lower compression ball anyway.

Weather still looks to be in the 70s this weekend but I hear you on the crappier balls. I'll likely get out my Vice which are still good balls but I don't feel as bad losing them. Was also considering putting my leaf blower in the cart with me which could save some aggravation finding balls.

A lot of guys at my club do that. Helps clearing off the greens too.

Played the Irish Course at Whistling Straits the other day for work. What a beautiful place.

It was a scramble and I didn’t really give a shit how I played but holy shit, that place is just an absolutely perfect setting. For all the shit Wisconsin gets about it’s lack of sobriety, wasting hall of fame QBs, weight, intelligence, looks…that place is truly special.

Hey I resemble those remarks! Never done the Irish but Kohler is pretty spectacular overall and Wisconsin in general is starting to get the respect it deserves for great golf all over the state. I tend to side with shakes on the overhyped conditions on The Straits for what you pay but Blackwolf is still one of my favorites.

Except for maybe a round or two with wife in October my season is pretty much done. Naturally, my mind turns right away to equipment. I have not bout too much lately but this off season I am going to replace my irons.

I generally and a Taylormade guy but am open to other thoughts etc. I use 2016 M2 regular flex graphite irons. usually carry 4-PW-AW-SW but see many sets now are 5-PW. Some have the AW but I am guessing many use a 4H (which I have) vs 4 iron. Also a lt see to by specific separate wedges especially 58-60.

I usually bu a couple of years old still rated top condition which likely puts me in the SIM2 Max - Stealth family. Just spitballing what some of you guys think especially your favorite sources. There is a long winter to figure it out.

and honestly, the Irish course if just as nice as the Straits, but costs about $300 less because you don't get the lake views.

Did you see the sheep?

I did. There were a bunch of them on the tee box around 15 while we were coming up. One of the guys I was playing with almost smoked one on 18.

I played Blackwolf a while back. That place is awesome too. It was late in the season and salmon were jumping out of the river, which I spent a lot of time in & around.

Think I lost a dozen balls that day.

Probably closer to $500 plus when you pay for a caddie/tip. I went into my pocket to do it once with my dad. A lot of money but some good memories and photos to have with him now that he is gone.

Was fortunate enough to get invited to play North Shore CC in Mequon, just north of Milwaukee yesterday. Had a business meeting in the morning and then stuck around for 18 afterwards. Beautiful fall day yesterday and this place was just beyond nice. Probably one of the nicest places I have ever teed it up before. Conditions were immaculate and it was a fun and fair layout. The course was built in 1920 so lots of mature trees starting to change colors. I was getting 25-30 yards of roll on the driver which is unheard of where I usually play. The fairways were cut so tight. I laid the sod over a couple of wedges and was a bit nervous to start. Made the turn at 41 with a double bogey and about 4 putts that burned the edge of the cup. Greens were so fast and true. 8) Proceeded to bogey 3 of the first four on the back and then gave myself a little pep talk about just enjoying the day and relaxing. I guess it worked as I made two birdies coming home including one on the last to put up a 37 on the back for a 78. Played with a nice group of down to earth guys I had never met before and although I don't normally like doing that kind of thing it was a pretty great day to get out of the office. So interesting to see how the other half lives inside a private club like that. I know, I know,..... Sorry you're poor. :eye:

Weather looks like it's holding out for at least a few more weeks of fall golf, although my teetime for Sunday morning looks like one of the colder mornings in the 2 week forecast.

Tee times at my place are moved back to 8am for rest of the season. I am booked up through the month and then will likely hang them up for the year.
