Their kicker tonight was a clip of a backdrop on the set of ESPN Colombia falling on the back of a guy's head and knocking him into the desk. They showed it like seven or eight times. Ouch! It felt like a parody of a local news on-the-lighter-side story, everyone chuckling about a guy getting hit in the head. It was all very strange. Their reach really exceeds their grasp.

Can take the WGN out of the name, but it's still WGN.

Yeah, exactly, it was weird to watch them keep replaying a calamity but more or less play it straight without Robin Baumgarten snort-laughing the whole time.

They replayed the exact clip you referenced on the WGN news this morning. It was more of a shocked that looked bad that the usual over the top "ouch my balls" humor that carries the typical broadcast.

Quote:
Still struggling to find an audience 10 months after launching as a cable news network, NewsNation is shaking up its prime-time lineup — again.

The Chicago-based network, formerly known as WGN America, is rebranding “Early Edition” as “Rush Hour,” launching “On Balance,” a one-hour platform for former Fox News anchor Leland Vittert, and reducing its signature evening newscast, NewsNation Prime, to just one hour.

The new lineup, set to begin July 19, is the latest attempt to establish NewsNation as a cable news player, and begin to fulfill its promise to lure viewers away from CNN, MSNBC and Fox News.

“‘Rush Hour’ and ‘On Balance’ emphasize our commitment to building a unique, one-of-a-kind news network that is independent, respects its viewers, and remains dedicated to keeping them engaged, with just a little bit of unpredictability thrown in for good measure,” Michael Corn, president of news for NewsNation, said in a news release Thursday.

Corn, a former ABC News executive, joined NewsNation in May, taking the helm of the nascent news network after the abrupt resignation of Jennifer Lyons in March. Lyons, the former news director at WGN-Ch. 9, oversaw the transformation of WGN America into a prime-time cable news operation under Dallas-based owner Nexstar Media Group.

WGN America launched “NewsNation” as a three-hour nightly newscast Sept. 1, pledging to deliver unbiased reporting and take a bite out of the more established cable news networks. It has yet to achieve either critical or ratings success, ranking 99th in the latest Nielsen prime-time cable ratings.

In March, the network rebranded as NewsNation and expanded its prime-time lineup to five hours, adding veteran TV anchor Ashleigh Banfield with a 9 p.m. news/talk show titled “Banfield.” Joe Donlon was shifted to a one-hour solo gig called “The Donlon Report” at 6 p.m. cutting his former show, NewsNation Prime, to two hours.

The new weeknight lineup will start at 5 p.m. with Rush Hour, anchored by Nichole Berlie, a former Boston TV anchor who joined NewsNation in September.

Vittert, a veteran foreign correspondent who spent more than a decade at Fox News, has been covering national affairs and delivering special reports for NewsNation since joining the network in May. His new show, “On Balance,” will air at 7 p.m. weeknights, “taking a critical look at some of the day’s hottest topics,” the network said.

“‘On Balance’ will ask ‘why?’ on the most pressing matters of the day without fear or favor,” Vittert said in the news release. “We also believe, sometimes, two opposing views can both be true at once.”

So with one hour of hard news down from three and "news-based" programming everywhere else, they're basically just an extremely tame Fox News that also shows In the Heat of the Night reruns in middays.

NewsNation's morning news show is called Morning in America. They're not even trying to hide it anymore.

I’ve liked the Dan Abrams Hour or whatever the few times I’ve run across it, mainly for LivePD updates.

With the addition of Chris Cuomo, NewsNation is just four hours of opinion shows in evenings like the other cable channels. Not much news. They do seem to have a few Last Man Standing marathons, however.

They got moved back to the Dawson's Creek channel.

Is that still above the WNBA channel in the rankings?
