You have to admit balcks look great in the outfit. But I have no idea if they can fight fires worth a shit. My first inclination is the building will be burnt to the ground by the time they get there.

Anyway, listened to all that, and it was enjoyable to hear some of the backstory, even if Jason going monologue gets to be a challenging listen.

I noticed he got some dates wrong, like moving to Boers & Bernstein in 2007 (it was at least '06 if not earlier), leaving for Atlanta in 2014 (it was 2012), coming to back to work with Spiegel in 2016 (2015), and maybe this is just because I'm rather good at remembering dates, but part of me is like if your timeline is off, what else is off?

His overall story arc seems to be that everything good that has happened to him is because of his work and his alone, while everything bad is the result of forces above him conspiring against him. And I don't think that's entirely false, because yeah, deCastro went over Mitch's head to fire Goff and put Mac in because he was old buddies with Mac and thought the afternoon show was going too far afield from sports talk. That happened, and deCastro wasn't entirely wrong, either. But life is full of using one's own agency to succeed and to self-sabotage, and then along the way we also get good breaks and we get bad breaks. I know I've had all four. Jason seems to preclude the possibility that anyone has ever done anything to assist him nor that he has ever done anything to hinder himself, and I don't find that completely believable. He talked about how the producers let him and Sam Fels get on the air underage. In another world, maybe a different producer says "nope, the rule's the rule" and doesn't let him on, or maybe Gleason steps in and says "hey, no more putting these kids on the air." Maybe Hood doesn't feel secure enough in his role to let a producer do an NBA hit, maybe Terry is well enough to do the show full-time at full strength and doesn't need a third mic getting in the way. Or to really put a finer point on it, if Jason were ten years younger and tried to break into radio after it had been calcified, corporatized, and fully HRified, do you think they would have let him pretend to go to school for an internship because he was a cool guy? He got in on the ground floor, or close to it, and all the credit to him for believing in himself and pursuing what he wanted, but to tell the stories of all these breaks he got without putting together that he did get some considerable help along the way seems muddled to me.

I didn't listen, and have no desire to. That said, he's extremely bitter and foolish if he believes no one helped him or he didn't play some role in his failures. If that fuels him, I don't have an issue with it. I think it's holding him back.

It was weird, because he acknowledges that these fortunate events happened, but he doesn't seem to attribute any agency or benevolence to the people who helped him advance, as if his sheer talent just brute-forces everyone around him into doing nice things for him. They don't want to pay it forward or benefit the station as a whole or even look out for a nice guy who's good at his job, they simply Appreciate Greatness.

On Parkins farewell tour, during his last transition with Bernstein he said Bernstein went to his HS and told him if you wanted a career in sports radio 'you better have financially supportive parents', and Parkins acknowledged he did.

It was kind of weird, but at least honest?

He mentioned that he lost the producing job for Hood's show because Hood did a favor by giving the job to a used car salesman's son. Didn't mention the name but I believe it was Leonardi?

If some if their more promoted or hyped shows aren't pulling numbers Goffs podcast isn't drawing flies. Simmons won't fire him because he's been accused in the past of not hiring enough minorities.

I'm amazed that the Score has producers that are single.

They must have second jobs to live in the city.

and I don't mean that as a slight

I was thinking just the other day that my life wouldn't have been too bad if I had gone that route.

Why do you want all balck men to be firemen? You know Chicago doesn't really hire the balcks as firemen, and I can't imagine Evanston has a lot of openings or pay as well as Chicago.

Why didn't you get a job as a city garbage man instead of following your passion? You could be retiring without following the markets as close as you do, needing to chase down clients that didn't pay, or dealing with assholes daily.

How do you know money matters to Goff? This may not apply to Goff, but I believe most of the radio guys who persevere come from money. I think Parkins spoke about his willingness to take a $30k a year gig because his family wasn't poor. I saw the inside of Adam Abdalla's house on an ESPN recap of Hard Knocks. My parents dissuaded me. I wanted to be a barber. I think I could have enjoyed that life.

It changes as you age. Older balck women are generally opposed to sweating after paying hundreds of dollars to get their hair done. You need some wihtes, Hispanics, Asians, or balck women who have "Indian" in their family in that hot tub.

You're aware of it, but you aren't necessarily bitter about it. We all start the game of life at different places on the board and our motivations aren't the same. You have to find ways to maximize your hand to achieve the goals that are most important to you. It's wasted energy if it isn't solving a problem.

Pretty much every faith teaches the road to ruin is lead by wanting but, like I said, it's also the thing that's driven us to evolve and progress. Satisfied doesn't do it.

I generally agree, but that drive can make you miss a lot.

My oldest son will turn 18 in January and leave me next August. There's literally a thread somewhere around here celebrating his creation. The thought of his departure has gotten me a little emotional and has caused me to do a lot of reflecting.

For virtually all of his retrievable memories, it's just been me and his siblings. While I was there smiling and clapping for all of the successes, and passing out hugs and encouraging words for the failures, I don't remember any of the shit without a photo or some question. The outward smile, but internal drive to push forward to the next thing can create a fucked up level of tunnel vision. I robbed myself of the opportunity to truly enjoy certain moments, and possibly my kids, because being satisfied was something that was gently, but strongly discouraged by me. Like robots, it was programmed in them from birth.

There's a pleasure and peace that can come from being satisfied/content. It doesn't hurt to give it a try.

I think it's a combination. When I started listening to both stations in the early 2000s there was some similarity between ESPN and The Score with Carmen/Silvy and Goff/drinky. While each had their own personality you could tell that ESPN hosts were helping or mentoring Carmen and Silvy where that was not the feeling from the score and I get the feeling that Bernstein was the lead on that. Even so when McNeil went to the Score he didn't pick up Goff or drinky but went with Spiegel and then Parkins. I can't remember if Goff and drinky were there or if they were too tainted by Bernstein at that point.

Goff seems like his own worst enemy but I can completely see why he thinks he got a little bit of a raw deal or would have at least liked more help. It's got to be disappointing if this was a thing of his from a young age and you get there and it goes the way it did. He made some bad decisions too.

He went into business for himself and took an opportunity away from accounts. Maybe Mike North could do that at Danny Lee's Score but you can't do that at CBS.

He did his own barter deal with a Mexican restaurant where they'd give him free salsa in exchange for a promo on the air, never cleared it with sales.

How is this different from Bernstein, on the air, talking about free chicken on Bears Monday from a place that isn't even sponsoring the station (yet)?

Seems like a lot of these hosts may get some deals by casually dropping in a company name, no?
