This thread is useless without pictures of Rose's girlfriend.

The anti Andrew Benintendi.

His max effort at all times approach made him stand out even in the 70s when less players loafed.

He never showed pain when hbp. He would even run full speed to first on those hbp & IBB.

Ray Fosse was his buddy and went out to dinner with them the night before and still drilled him in an All-Star game.

This was pretty memorable too.

I once stumbled into a drunken Rose in an alley in Poughkeepsie.

never a fan when all i knew about him was on the field. Narcissist who never realized his look was laughably cheezy, even in the max cheese era of the 70s. His numbers are good but by the time I watched him play he was already a legend and me, as a kid, wondered why?

In this WAR/low batting average era, I don't see how his record gets broken. No one would give the Pete Rose of the 20's or 30's the opportunity to play into his 40's.

he had almost a .400 OBP at age 44 with a full season of AB. Some chooch GM would love him

He was roundly hated at Cincinnati. People started to appreciate the baseball machine he was when he was in Philly. Not everybody, but enough. No sportswriters though.

If a GM doesnt want a .400 OBP guy on his team, he shouldn’t be a GM

Age 41: -1.1 WAR
Age 42: -2.1 WAR
Age 43: 1.0 WAR
Age 44: .6 WAR
Age 45: -.9 WAR

I'm guessing in today's climate he doesn't get an opportunity at age 43 after his performance in the two preceding years.

Ages 43-45 he was the last man on the bench and also the manager of some terrible Reds teams. The front office certainly wasn’t going to stop him from writing his name in the lineup enough times to get the hits record.

I completely forgot about the player-manager years

I had completely forgot Pete Rose had spent 5 months in Marion Illinois US penitentiary for tax evasion. Same prison that John Gotti went to.

Also from a 2014 article.
By Wins Above Average, Rose’s final seven seasons rank 29th-worst among position players in modern baseball history. With the help of the Baseball-Reference.com Play Index tool.

That would explain a lot.
