Everyone cutting cable to save $10 a month really had some annoying consequences.

 My guess is MANY if not most are saving much more than $10 per month. When we switched from Dish to Youtube TV in December 2020 we went from $124 to $65 (now $73).
I'm comparing it to similar channel lineups. Most people acted like they were saving huge amounts of money when they had a cable plan with 220 channels and then YouTubeTV with 100 channels. We have YouTubeTV too but cable packages were much nicer than having YoutubeTV + cycling through Max, Paramount+, Disney+, Peacock, and Amazon Prime to see the same stuff that just showed up before on cable.

I should have stated, this comp is apples to apples. Both Dish and Youtube TV are the higher tier basics, i.e the tier to include NFL network and other sports. Neither with paid add ons like HBO, etc.
As of right now, Dish has a plan for $92 a month that includes 190 channels. YoutubeTV is is $73 a month. So, I guess it's $20 a month savings with downside being you have to get Peacock and Amazon Prime to make sure you don't miss out on sports you like.

I ran the numbers the last time I reupped my Xfinity...if I dropped cable and went to Hulu Live (what I was looking at), I realized I'd need to increase my internet speed anyway.

Once the math was done mathing, I was going to wind up paying like 12 bucks more a month to drop cable.

I still have Xfinity.

When I dropped DTV many years ago it was well over $200, but as Brick said it was a lot more channels. I went with and am still with Hulu, and what I have found is that it has what I need. Now in Chicago it was mostly missing Marquee (but for one year), and up here it is missing Bally’s. Those are big considerations if you need to pay to get baseball and other sports. I pay for the MLB package, which works for the Cubs since I am not in market.

It would actually be easier if it all went back to one service with everything, but Netflix blew up that model. Now we need a multitude of streaming services just get all the sports and series that one would want.

Being the miserable Sox fan I am...I wouldn't pay any more to watch them do anything stupid, so I'm good on the baseball front.

The cord-cutting movement was a bust for sure, at least for consumers. Cobbling together a bunch of streaming services whose libraries seem to get either smaller or worse has not been a net benefit. And that's why we're coming full circle to these packages that approximate what people were getting with cable anyway.

But let's not let the sports teams off the hook for this. The concept of bundling was non-offensive when ESPN and the RSNs had modest carriage fees. Yes, people who never watched baseball were paying for baseball. None of us ever watch Real Housewives (identify yourselves if you do), but we pay for those who do. But when the costs of these channels get to the point where customers have to ask why they're paying for all this crap, which ESPN and RSNs do but Bravo does not, there's a problem. And it's a problem for the rest of us, because they've been subsidizing us as viewers and as fans of an enterprise that needs to be constantly taking in as much money as possible. If consumers have to pay what regional baseball coverage actually costs, I'm not sure enough people will.

I got rid of cable TV almost 10 years ago. I pay $70/month for 1GB fiber and $19/month total for Peacock and ESPN+. I do pay $150/yr for MLB out of market but I would be paying that even if I had cable TV. The only other thing I have is Paramount+ but I get that complementary through one of my credit cards.

I do wish that I could get the earlier rounds of the MLB postseason, but I can watch the World Series OTA on Fox.

I'm sure. Literally the only thing baseball has going for it is Summer. But Summer doesn't help TV ratings. I don't know how you keep baseball from becoming hockey without earth shattering changes. Arguably the greatest player in history plays right now and I've spent like 5 minutes watching him.

Channel 62.3 in Hammond. And from what I understand, Directv.

Another question. Is it even digital? I get sound but no picture.

So... the Hawks really don't have a TV outlet this season?

They are on a digital subchannel of channel 62 out of Hammond. Comcast does not carry channel 62 nor its subchannels at the time, and you may be too far north to pick up their signal over the air with an antenna (i believe the transmitter is in Tinley Park).

So what you are saying is that they were too cheap to go with an established station's subchannels. Do Channel 38 and 44 still exist?

44 is a Telemundo O&O, so they're owned by the same corporation they just bailed on.

This is completely bizarre. Hawks games aren't really televised. At least not outside 30 miles of fucking Tinley park.

All over-the-air television has been digital since 2009. If you're getting sound but no picture, you can try rescanning your antenna, but you may be too far out of range to pick up the signal clearly, thus sound but no picture (the old "snowy" reception went away with analog).

I'm such an idiot. I don't know how I didn't put it together sooner. WJYS isn't a must-carry and that's the whole point; they wouldn't be able to charge carriage fees if they were required to make their signal available to cable operators. So that's the game, they're trying to double-dip on cord-cutters and fashion an RSN out of a digital subchannel for a TV station that never bothered to get itself onto cable.

That happened with one of my TVs. What happened in my situation was it was an older TV (made in 2011). the CHSN stations broadcast in MPEG 4. TVs that old cannot decode it.

Here is a list of all channels in North America broadcasting in MPEG 4.
https://www.rabbitears.info/oddsandends ... uest=mpeg4

I am guessing that channels 2.4, 2.5, and 66.6 are also coming up with sound and no picture.

The only solutions for me right now are:
1. Keep my old TV and if I want to watch CHSN, I watch on the newer TV.
2. Buy a converter box, which needs to use an HDMI port in my TV, which only has two, which are being used right now by my BluRay player and my firestick.
3. Wait for an app to come out that will be free to use.
4. Buy a new TV.

I am probably sticking with option 1, and keep and eye out for sales on new TVs.

"In order to watch the Sox, you'll need to buy a new TV" is something else. 121 losses weren't bad enough, now you guys are being haunted by the ghost of Eddie Einhorn.

Thanks, I'll try it on the smart Tv. I did the one in the bedroom just because I could get at it easier.

And why do 12 yr old Sonys have better pictures than a brand new smart TV? Is it just the brand?

To be fair, the television that it didn't work on is 13 years old, and most TVs made within the last decade can decode MPEG 4. My 11 year old TV decodes it just fine.

It looks like WJYS has since moved its transmitter from Tinley Park to the Sears Tower, but still broadcasts at a considerably lower wattage than other UHF stations on the Sears and Hancock. The FCC claims that this is their contour map; I think that's being extremely generous.

Why doesn't the NHL care about this blackhawks broadcast situation?

I'd lay odds Gary Bettman doesn't even realize they switched stations...
