another good period and hellebuyck showed he's human. get the feeling the refs aren't done calling penalties on the blackhawks and it will be a tough 3rd. jets are seemingly having a let-down after destroying edmonton the other night.

How many draws were against Lowry? He's one of the best in the game, been a big possession driver for the Jets for years now.

Bedard is having a rough night at the dot...Namestnikov is having a night at the dot as well.

wow..too bad, at least 1 point guaranteed. ice tilted massively the last 10 mins, hawks playing as if they were protecting a 1 goal lead in a game 7. soderblom with his best ever game - no rebounds.

didn't take long...lost d-zone face-off again.

this club has late game collapses written all over them, still tough to stomach, even after 59 fantastic road minutes.

yes, though, bedard also loses lots of face-offs against so-so guys on home ice, with the favorable match-ups.

don't want to pick on him. think he was a -44 last year. he's got to produce more to offset weaknesses in his game.

Bedard was invisible for the last third of the third period. Can't have that. Soderblom deserved better, he played out of his ass for 59 minutes.

Wow this post game show is horrible. It seems kind of like a SCTV parody. I sure hope they can make it seem less like a public access show.

soderblom...last year. rebounds, swimming for pucks in the crease...rebounds...more rebounds.

had a great game tonight. just too bad, you can tell the hawks weren't interested in even a casual forecheck with about 10 mins left. soft dump-ins, retreat..invite pressure. winnipeg with way too many easy entries 5x5, soderblom makes a save, hawks lose subsequent face-off..more pressure.

audio is way off. in the 1st period, PP time graphic wasn't right.

for what it's worth after 2 games for both chicago and winnipeg..

bedard and lowry are both under 50%. leads me to believe that lowry had a bad face-off night against edmonton, though his club smoked them, 6-0.

took a look...lowry won 6 and lost 9 against edmonton. lowry won 12 and lost 11 against chicago. bedard was 5 won/11 lost, last night. dickinson was brutal, 3 for 12. dickinson got beat by scheifele on a vital d-zone face-off for winnipeg's tieing goal with 1 minute left.

reading some website sources for news and commentary...second city hockey and bleacher nation.

i like both for different reasons. a bit more analysis and game commentary on second city hockey, while bleacher nation gives you more general team news/news on prospects. the bleacher guy is very in-tune; day to day and has strong opinions on certain players.

one of his current opinions is that he can't wait to shit all over athanasiou, as soon as his computer warms up. yeah, i get it...it's been talked about here for awhile. his hands aren't half as good as his feet. there's a reason he's been on x-amount of clubs. the fact of the matter is that athanasiou's speed will create more chances than anything...and some of those will go in.

Quote:
the Blackhawks played a really good, strong, structured game… for 59 minutes. The Blackhawks did everything in that game except finish (“the Athanasiou” as some call it).

so..no goals, failing to finish is an 'athanasiou'. ok. the blackhawks have 1 goal over 2 games, lots of 'athanasious' for bedard and kurashev and bertuzzi and...

the guy is perfect for the 4th line. his contract is inflated, but, he's only here for this season and then a free agent. relax.

the club is better than last year and when we're talking about how crucial face-offs are, it's a good thing. mikheyev looks good, better than bertuzzi. lots of good stuff to talk about. athanasiou, who may get 11 minutes a game, is small potatoes.

second city hockey is telling us that dickinson is so highly rated defensively, the coaching staff has pulled him from PP duty to concentrate on defense 5x5 and PK. ok, interesting. still, no real excuse for donato and maroon or smith to be on the #2 PP unit...need to get this special team going. bedard and jones don't mix and match well on the PP. dickinson lost the face-off to scheifele, then lost his check on scheifele and scheifele scores with 1 minute left. dickinson won 3 face-offs, lost 9. not good enough.

tonight, looks as though the oilers are doing what most clubs did last year, playing their back-up goalie against the blackhawks. pickard and not skinner. almost an insult, hopefully the FWDs are insulted and start scoring.

2nd period was bedard's. PP assist and a goal. 3-1 lead and you have to wonder if coach luke will limit brodie's 3rd period minutes. how many times did the hawks fail to clear their zone when they had clear possession....soft. it didn't matter last year, matters this year - if they want to win.

Good win tonight, and I'm the rare Hawks fan who hates the Bears so I can stay up celebrating with no regret!

Rick Ball is kind of the Gary Bender of Hawks announcers. Solid pro voice, he's better than Vosters or Dan Kelly, but nothing about him says "voice of the team" at all and he'll be gone to his next gig within 5 years.

shaky 3rd, for sure. the worm turned and the opposing goalie had a so-so night and mrazek was good.

vlasic with a super hit on hyman in the 2nd and kaiser erased macdavid into the wall in the 3rd, where macdavid lost his temper and got a penalty. hawks in great shape going forward with both. donato with a greedy play at the end, surprised he got ice time with the 4th line to end the game. great result, but gave up 34 shots...at times, seems as though they don't collectively know how to finish a game.

3 points in 3 games on the road. calgary is very doable.

i think he's better than that. in 5 years, he'll be in his mid 60's. not sure how much the market will be worth for a blackhawks announcer in 2030, but i'm betting they'll be better in 5 years than now. 2030? hawks play by play or retired to banff.

All the voices of teams are gone or about to be. Sam Rosen is retiring, Rick Jeanneret is dead, Jack Edwards has some sort of weird brain damage and can't talk right anymore, Mike Lange, Howie Rose, Bob Miller, and Pat Foley have all been done for a while now. Ken Daniels is still in Detroit and that's about it. At least we still have John Wiedeman on the radio side.

Speaking of, now that I'm back to being radio-only (hey, at least I'm well-practiced), I know Charlie Roumeliotis has dutifully covered this team through some pretty lean years and deserves the wraparound gig as much as anyone, but this is some Harper College shit.

kaiser getting praised in the hockey world - his check and erasure on macdavid was sublime defensive work.

no one has mentioned that failing to take the body was the reason he got sent down last year. the red wings robby fabbri (think he's on anaheim now) made kaiser look pathetic on a rush near the wall and kaiser was sent to rockford. the man learned his lesson. no real pre-season games for him, has been excellent.

here's that embarrassing moment last year.

Kaiser is becoming the poster child for why it makes sense to send our young d men to Rockford for the entire year. And looking at how our D is lining up for the future, I'd say we are pretty loaded. Levshunov, Korchinski, Vlasic, Kaiser. That's 4 right there plus you still have Rinzel in college, Del Mastro, Allan, Phillips. Plus the really tall guy, forgot his name.

Vlasic already looking like a potential #1 Dman which is crazy. We still have Levshunov who is hyped to be a #1 D man. Plus Korchinski is looking like a top 4 D man. and now Kaiser looking like he could move into the top 4 at some point. And we still have prospects who are expected to challenge for those spots.

Now really just need some elite wing prospects, that's the only area we are a little barren. Unless Bedard and Nazar end up as wingers and then what we really need are centers.

Would love to see a clip of Kaiser erasing McDavid, if anyone happens to come across it.

watched the bruins lose at home today, judd sirott and the venerable andy brickley. thankfully, he's no jack edwards. sirott looks to be banking on a boston future with a longer than usual 'goal' call. sirrot has the sense to stay away from absurd bruin homer-ism that edwards had non-bruin fans gagging on.

as far as charlie, seems like a good soldier. not sure if he comes from the family that were big restaurant people.

Tell me about it. If Jack Edwards hadn't been broadcasting for the six New England states on the New England Sports Network, he'd have been in a lot of trouble. That guy was biased!

I couldn't stand Edwards but hey, plenty of non-Hawks fans couldn't stand Foley and Tallon either. Brickley is fun to listen to because of his thick regional accent that's rare to hear anymore especially in broadcasting.

It's kind of too bad the Hawks lost Sirott but when he left it still looked like Foley and the Hawks were going to live happily ever after.

not sure if donato is banged up or maybe his selfish play at that end of the oiler game is the reason he's not projected to play tonight.

Quote:
Foligno-Bedard-Teravainen
Hall-Kurashev-Bertuzzi
Mikheyev-Dickinson-Anderson
Maroon-Athanasiou-Smith
(Reichel, Donato)

Martinez-Jones
Vlasic-Brodie
Kaiser-Murphy
(Allan)

it was bad enough that i commented on it saturday night. bad play, selfish play. today, i'm reading that coach luke says it's easy to keep reichel out of the 12 game FWDs:

Quote:
"We're playing really well as a team right now, so there's not a lot of changes going on and there's not a lot of guys that are banged up, so you've got to bide your time and wait. I'm sure at some point we might have to have a discussion about a plan for them to get into games, whether it be here or down below, but we haven't come to that point yet."

i somewhat agree. i think they are playing well, no juggernaut. he'll need to be smart when to mix and match the FWDs and also when martinez and brodie need a day off or two for maintenance.

Boston had a nice tradition of thick accents there with Jerry Remy, Tommy Heinsohn, Mike Gorman, and Andy Brickley all wicked-hahding their way through broadcasts.

Yeah, I was kind of surprised the Hawks couldn't bring Judd back after Foley got pushed out. Maybe he saw what they did to Pat and didn't want anything to do with it.

The Bruins are the #1 team in Boston right now. Why would Sirott want to leave his current job to return to Chicago?

Not now, no. I was thinking of the 2021 offseason, when they announced they were getting rid of Foley and he was doing Bruins radio. But that's not a bad gig, to be fair.
