If you have access to the Athletic, here is a great article about the friendship between Walter Payton and Matt Suhey. Might need a tissue for this one unless you have no soul.

tomorrow is the 25th anniversary of Payton's death.

Friend of mine wife worked at / was sort of a big shot Northwestern Hospital when the early stuff about about " whats going on with Payton , he's lost weight " stuff hit and Ill never forget him telling me long before everything came out that Payton was a walking dead man, had inoperable liver cancer . Was one of those " yeah sure thing bud" didnt really believe it but ill be damned he had the 411 on it long before it became public.

I'll never forget meeting Payton. I was about 10 years old. Friend of mine down the street, his family owned Carmichal Trucking and his partner was a former Bear. Through that guy my friend's family had become buddies with Walter. They were hosting a party and I was there hanging with my friend. We were messing around with walkie talkies and going to different spots around the house/yard talking to each other. Then I get a call on the walkie talkie from this guy with a really high pitched voice and he goes "Hey Mikey, how you doing, it's Walter Payton". I go running aroudn the corner and sure enough Walter is standing there with the walkie talkie. Super nice guy as I'm sure everyone here knows.

He even drove a bunch of the neighborhood kids to school one day in his Rolls when he saw everyone waiting at the bus stop.

I got pillow talk about the struggles of a newly married man. No name was mentioned, but I got enough information that I gave a name and asked if it was him. They were shocked. They didn't have to ask me not to mention anything. That was already understood.

People vent about their work and share some private things with a spouse. I don't think she was wrong for sharing that with her husband. He shouldn't have shared it with anyone else because of the chance that it could come back and harm his wife.

I try and avoid talking to my wife in general. Nothing good comes of it.

I'll definitely read it. Every year when i was a kid we'd walk to the Auto Show just to catch Walter Payton at the Oldsmobile dealership. He was sponsored by them and he'd just be there meeting and greeting people and always seemed like a genuinely nice guy.
