That's one of my favorite courses. How did you like it?

Used to play there a few times a year, but it's been awhile. Have family that live close, and meant to get out there this summer and play with them, but never figured out a weekend that worked.

Loved it . Lack of course knowledge hurt a little bit as far being out of position on the fairway for those 2 holes where the giant fucking tree blocks your approach shot but overall it was great . Let me go out as a single so i played 2 balls on a lot of holes , wasnt rushed and it was such a beautiful day I took my time and really just enjoyed the peace and quiet and the setting .

Another nice weekend to get out and play some fall golf. Weather looking good for me to play this weekend and next, then I am going to hang it up for the year.

As long as the weather holds, I'll keep playing.

Heading out to Ames this weekend for the football game tomorrow night. Going to squeeze 9 holes in tomorrow morning, tailgate all afternoon, 6:30pm kickoff. High in the 70's. No trip to Home Depot, but still a solid Saturday.

Next Saturday is my final round for the year so figured I would just update this post I made earlier in the season to see how close I was to my goals. Off season plans include hitting the weight room and I'd like to shed some significant poundage. Would be nice to get more flexible as well. I am considering putting a net in my garage and hitting balls all winter but not sure if I can get a full swing in there yet or not. My usual driver ended up breaking over a month ago. It still works but I can't adjust the hosel at all. Played the used Titleist at the end and liked it enough that I will likely buy a used TSR3 at some point during the offseason. Can get them used for about $329 with good options for shafts, etc.... Maybe will look at a new 3 wood and replacing the 5 hybrid I have with a 9 wood. The 5 hybrid just has way too much offset for me and never got a good feel for it.

Sort of a Penske file day here so I added up a few stats from this year. 25 eighteen hole rounds and 3 nine holers thus far. I just track stats on the 18's. Finished the season with 69 rounds of eighteen holes, 5 rounds of nine holes and played in two scramble events for work

Stroke average is exactly 78. I suspect that will trend downwards now that the weather is a bit better, and the swing is getting grooved a bit Stroke average ended up at 77.31

42.2% of fairways. Would really like to see this get up to 50%. I've been switching between two drivers all season and one doesn't go particularly straighter than the other but one goes further and also allows me to work the ball left to right when I need to, so I have been favoring that one. 43 percent of fairways a round which is about 6 out of 14. Definitely think I can hit 50% next year

44% of greens. Again, I would really like to see this number closer to 55% but easier said than done
8.75 a round which comes out to 49% One more green a round would probably get me very close to my number

30.48 putts a round and averaging 1 three putt per. Sort of a misleading stat as it's very dependent on how many greens one hits
Ended up with 30.66 putts a round and .82 three putts a round.

56% scramble percentage around the greens. Would like to get up and down more than 60% of the time
Ended up with 55% here

24% sand saves. Last year I was above 50% which was the best I'd ever done. Certainly feel like 33% or higher would be ok.
Ended the season with 22% which was pretty awful. Again should be getting at least one out of three here.

1.64 birdies per round. Would love to get over 2 per round but that is going to take some better all-around play. Broken par on 4 nines this year but 73 has been my best round 3x 1.6 birdies per round stayed consistent. I hope to improve my putting inside 8 feet with the new putting green I got earlier this year and improve this number. Best round this year was a 69 but that is the only time I broke par for 18. I did break par 9x on nine holes but could only string it together once this season.

I'm about 5 rounds ahead of last year's pace as the weather has been good this year, and really no rainouts on the weekends. About 4 rounds behind my all time pace but I still have quite a bit of vacation to burn up so I should be able to start playing once during the week before work a bit more often.
Really fortunate with weather this year as I wasn't rained out more than 1-2 times that I can remember. Got a pretty early start to the season and I was able to leverage my vacation time pretty well for some extra rounds. Really got the most out of the season, just wish I could have gone low a few more times.

Interesting with the stats. The app I use calculates all kinds of things, but I'm not sure if there is a way to export them to save as a "snapshot" of where I was on 'X' date. I might have to create my own file as an "end of 2024 season" review.

I'm playing Saturday, and depending on forecast, will play once next weekend. Florida "work" trip the following weekend, and a few of us are hoping to get a round or 2 in there. After that, likely done. Of course, that's not a hard 'done'. Never know what the November temps could be.

Would be great to see your numbers if you can extract that info. I keep all my info on a traditional spreadsheet and keep the stats during my round on the scorecard and enter that data on Monday mornings. Been doing it for many years. Just gives me a snapshot of whether there was much improvement or not. Most of my stats have stayed pretty much the same since Covid likely because I don't really practice but there are anomalies that occur like with the sand game or scrambling from year to year.

8:15 tee time tomorrow. Forecast about 40 degrees on the first tee.... Normally, wouldn't play, but hoping to get a couple rounds in next weekend during Florida trip, so trying to stay in some sort of rhythm.

That said, looking at the 2 week forecast, temps are playable. Daylight becomes an issue though. Either tee off in the colder morning, or wait for it to warm up a little and the sun is setting at 4:30.

9:15 tomorrow for me. If the sun is out and low winds it shouldn't be too bad. I'm patient for the good weather in the spring, but I play until the bitter end in the fall.

 I’m the exact opposite. I’ll bundle up and play in just about anything in the spring after the long layoff, but when the season wraps and it starts getting cold with frost delays and fallen leaves I just hang it up as my body is very tired.

Today was the perfect example of my putting woes with my golf comeback this season. Hitting it great, and putting like i have a hockey stick.

15 GIR, made the up and down for par on the 3 greens i missed. That should be an under par round.

Four 3 putts for a 73 (+3).

A putting mat will be my christmas gift

Oooofff sorry. I can’t wait to use my new mat this winter. I love that I can create break with it

Election is over, now the important stuff.

Afternoon teetime tomorrow (as long as United stays on schedule), and morning teetime Saturday. Haven't played either course, and will be using rental clubs, but it's still golf in mid-80's temps.

Nice deal on golf gloves. I have been buying these for the last few years and they always sell them end of season. Two gloves for $25 isn't too bad.

Just ordered a couple - thanks for the tip.

I remember reading one of those "undercover pros" in Golf Digest and his article was about the free swag he gets. He said he gives a lot of it away to friends, but the one perk he loves about being a pro is wearing a new golf glove every round.

Yeah free gloves would be nice. I usually wear mine a bit too long but once a hole appears I chuck it. Usually about 30 rounds or so per glove. Glad you took advantage. It’s a pretty good website for stuff. They have a lot of good deals on shoes as well. I picked up two pair of Footjoys earlier this year for almost 50% off.

Been looking for a few weeks and finally found what appears to be a nice Titleist TSR3 driver for $300 so I pulled the trigger. $650 for a new GT driver, ummm no thanks.

Also just picked up a TSR2+ three wood. I’m locked and loaded for the next few seasons off the tee. Likely going to dump the three hybrid and add a wedge to the bag. Change from 52 and 58 to a three wedge arsenal of 52,56,60.

Weather staying just nice enough...

Thought my round in Florida on Saturday would end the season, but made a teetime for Saturday morning. This looks like it though. High of 40 next weekend.

Yeah, I think you are right. This weekend is the end.

I found the driver on a site called Sideline Swap. This is the 3rd club I have purchased from them and have been very happy with the results. I have been pretty careful to look at the pics as some of the product is more beat up than others but the driver I got was almost brand new. It had a KBS driver shaft on it which I didn't know was on the market and did some research on it only to find that it is a $350 shaft. Got the club for $299.

The three wood I got from the Titleist Certified site and also is next to new. A few small scratches on the bottom but they are barely visible. Each of the clubs came with a brand new headcover that matched the club. I've had a lot of luck on the Callaway Pre-owned site over the years as well, so if you know what you are looking for and what you want, it truly is the best way to find a deal on a club. In the old days I would drive to Golf Galaxy and PGA SuperStore every other weekend and look in the used bins hoping they would have something. This works much better obviously.

Played yesterday. 5 bogies, 4 birdies, for a 71 (+1). Nothing on the 2 week forecast shows golfing weather, so this was probably the last round until spring, unless a unexpected Florida or Arizona trip pops up.

Back to the 'stats' post, here is where I ended up in the categories TheGrint app calculates. I guess a year from now, I can see if things were better or worse next season.
Index: 1.7 (Lowest all year was 1.6).
"Anti-Handicap" 5.7 (takes 8 worst scores in last 20 rounds and gives an index)

Putting: 32.5 putts per round (4.7 one putts, 11.8 two putts, 1.4 three putts)

Driving Accuracy: 56% hit

GIR: 62% (66% on par 3, 58% on par 4, 69% on par 5). Hit the fairway, 70% GIR. Miss the fairway, 49%

My goal for this winter is to buy some sort of putting mat/system, but trying to research it get overwhelming without being able to try them out.

If I decide to splurge a little, here's my list. Would welcome feedback on these or any others.

PrimePutt seems to have all great reviews, but is also expensive.
BirdieBall reviews all say it rolls great. Downside is it is a foam surface, that reviewers wonder about durability. Also available in larger sizes.
Puttr is a kind of a combo putting mat/video game/stat tracker. Might make practice more fun than just hitting 10 foot putts on a regular mat.

I have the Perfect Practice putting mat and I think it's great. Prices have seemed to come down a bit since I bought it a couple years ago.

I got the Puttout Air Break earlier this year. Very cool because you can create breaking putts but downside is it’s only 8 ft long and not cheap. I’ve heard they may offer additional sections to buy in the future to extend length.
