The promise of a free Internet was gone long before 2009. I remember how wild it was in the 90s. You could find all manner of weird and interesting shit. Then, for whatever reason, people decided they preferred their Internet experience under the auspices of a few giant overlords.

AOL was an early overlord. I remember futilely attempting to explain to a business partner that he didn't need to open AOL to use the Internet.

Anyway, I think there has to be some content moderation lest a site is rendered unusable. But when content moderation slides into censorship along political lines, a site is no longer a platform, but is instead a publisher. And it should lose all its platform protections.

I don't think there's any doubt that pre-Musk Twitter was being censored along political lines.

As an aside, we've been accused of censoring CFMB along political lines. That is clearly patently absurd when the guy doing the complaining averages more posts per day than anyone.

I'm not a blue sky or blue cry or or threads or even mastodon person. You can't follow goings on with sports teams on those other platforms (afaik). So twitter it is.

Musk basically became Trump's second running mate in this election and is joining his cabinet. It's not shocking that people that don't like Trump would seek to also not support his closest allies.

Yes, the increase in censorship has progressed with the centralization of internet spaces. Facebook started the trend of everyone visiting one site every day. Twitter came along and ramped up/ further centralized our source of information and provided a public space for calling out and cancelling people; really taking off after 2015 with MeToo and then 2016-2017 with the reaction to the 2016 election result.

It improved in recent years but, yes, it seems to have gone to shirt with the surfeit of useless noise about stupid conspiracies, chiner bots and spam thots.
