You referenced the clock stoppages as something that makes watching in person worse. Why would it be better or worse for football reasons? It's the same stoppage at home too.

Because stoppages in person mean more time spent looking at nothing. College has more stoppages, which is typically time spent looking at replays or cut-ins watching at home on the broadcast. I’ll tailor this to my experience…

When I was in school, our home games typically lasted 4-5 hours because of excessive TV time outs on top of already-longer game. So imagine waking up early to tailgate (awesome), drinking until game time (also awesome), seeing the band, flyovers, team running onto the field (all very awesome)…and then spending the next 4-5 hours standing on an 8 inch plank of wood sobering up, much of which is spent staring at nothing.

Why wouldn't you say commercials? That's what is happening in those stoppages.

Well yeah, if you only include literally the time in which the clock is running in the stadium, and stoppages that show replays or cut-ins, then it's better at home. But, the other stuff does exist and is all part of the overall experience.

The lower-deck seats I had access to gave a close-up view of the female sideline reporters being creeped out by Zach Zaidman trying to hit on them.

Why would I need to specify why the game stops?

I’m including the full in-game stadium experience. You’re including some of the pre-game? Maybe halftime? And students - whatever that means. Nothing about watching football but I’m sure that’s part of it.

You are explaining why being at home during stoppages is better. A large majority of them are commercials and not replays and cut-ins of other games. It's just interesting you didn't point out that while someone in person is sitting there at a college game watching whatever they have on the screen or in some cases on field stuff like a kicking contest you didn't mention that the home viewers are watching commercials.

This Ends in Antioch wrote:

No you aren't. You called the in-game stadium experience "non-football". Then, you do it again...

This Ends in Antioch wrote:

But yes, I would include the entire experience as part of the reason that college football is better in person.

I didn’t realize you thought I was saying that college games stop a lot because of commercials. That’s a bad argument and one I wouldn’t make.

Yes, there are a lot of non-football things that happen during a college football game. I’m starting to understand you very much enjoy those things.

Like 90% of the stoppages are commercial breaks.

By stoppages, did you mean the time between plays?

I guess I truly don't understand what your point was then.

This Ends in Antioch wrote:
Watching the game itself is also bad, probably worse given the clock stoppages.

College games have a lot more downtime given the rules. Longer play clock, longer halftime, more frequent game stoppages, etc.

College games also have more plays. Who doesn't like more football action?

This is for a stadium with no roof. Wonder how far over budget Allegiant Stadium II would wind up.

Does football even need a live audience? It could be played in a studio setting specifically designed to maximize and enhance the television broadcast. The NFL is a television show.

Do think the NFL would prefer that all games took place in domed stadiums which take out the weather factor, fans are optional, just a clean field where the skill position players can meet prop bet numbers for the gambling public. You can only get a feel for a football game if you are on the sideline.

Baseball and Hockey are better in person because you can see the way the defenses are lining up, baseball on TV is batter vs pitcher with a bunch of random guys with gloves on one hand standing around for no apparent reason, a long time baseball fan can tell a lot by watching how the defense lines up.

Basketball is the sport that works best on TV, fewer players and you can see most of the players at all times.

I’d rank the relative value of in-person v. TV as:
- hockey (easier to track the puck, much more appreciation for the speed of the game)
- basketball (similar to hockey, hard to appreciate how quick these guys move and how little space there is on the court on a tv screen)
- baseball (nostalgia & drinking $12 Lites is ok sometimes)
- football (almost nothing about in-person is better than TV)

never been to a Bears game but agree with the other three's order.

CH, this project will cost crazy money no matter where it is built. McCaskeys would have to sell a ton of the team.

The Rays just abandoned their plans to build a new stadium because they couldn't secure taxpayer funding. Bad time to build stadiums, I think.

Nashville would choose the Rays over Reinsdorf. Without question.

Yeah...the county and city boards both had turnover. the Rays are basically starting over Given the damage by the 2 hurricanes this year....public funding is likely a non-starter.

I can see Raleigh making a play. Nashville has to be tapped out with the biggest stadium subsidy in history for the loser-ass Titans, and Charlotte is overextended as it is with subsidized football and basketball that no one likes.

I'd nose baseball over basketball (you can see an entire play develop in front of you instead of what they TV shows you), but you're absolutely right about hockey.

The Skyway isn't in Indiana. You're using the Jason Goff map of Chicago.

I didn't mean like directly underneath it though that could save on construction costs as long as Dave Matthews Band never does a Chicago tour that goes to South Bend after.

Buried in here is the author's oblique suggestion that the Bears demolish a big stretch of State Street south of Monroe and put Alleged Stadium there. Wow, with ideas that dumb, you could work for Brandon Johnson.

Quote:
Lincoln Yards: The notorious mega-development neighborhood on the Near North Side has stalled. Developer Sterling Bay bought the 53 acres right before the pandemic.

The space and location might be nice, but the cost of developing the land, plus the strain on already limited infrastructure might make this a hard sell in a densely populated and affluent area.

The 78: Another parcel of land still under construction is the mega-development "The 78." The site has been pitched for a new Sox stadium, but the team could be on the block, which complicates where a new stadium could be built.

"The 78" may end up being too small for a football stadium, especially one that needs a lot of parking and a nearby entertainment district.

Lincoln Yards is too small and too annoying to get to. Not exactly hard, just annoying. Is everyone from points south going to get off at Armitage together? Are they going to go down the stairs single-file? Are they going to drive? Please tell me they're not going to drive.

The 78 is the only place in the city that can house a Bears stadium. I know I keep hitting this, but it's true. It's not too small. It doesn't need a lot of parking. That's the point. It's set up for maximum transit access from the entire metropolis. As for a nearby entertainment district, it has one. It's called "downtown Chicago" and has existed for years.

What about the dopes like me that like to tailgate? If I can't tailgate I'll save the $$ and stay home, cook in the driveway and watch on TV.

They spent nine figures on a desirable plot of land with room for all the tailgating you could possibly handle.

Which is where I can only guess they will end up after Warren runs out of plots of land with which to flirt.

But they lose the "Travel to Houston because the Bears are playing but don't go to the game or watch it on TV" demo.

If they could afford it they would’ve done it. Arlington Heights is dead, and so are all their other dreams. They aren’t going anywhere.
