Don’t try and subvert my expectations, don’t try to enlighten me as the audience, stop appealing to new markets at the sake of your traditional base…just give me what you know I’ll like and what I always liked before (pre-2013 or whatever).

And in that light Metallica is truly the perfect NFL halftime show.

I would say Green Day more so than Metallica, which, even as the most commercially successful metal band, is still a metal band and thus unfit for mass consumption. A set of "When I Come Around," "Welcome to Paradise," "Holiday," and "Good Riddance" hits all the nostalgia endorphins for Gen-X and millennials, is nominally subversive without actually being threatening, and no one will be able to complain about People Who Annoy You.

I only brought up Metallica because they originated out of the Bay Area and I have argued for many years when you factor influence, earnings, and longevity....they are the biggest American band of all time. Not my favorite, but outside of the Eagles....Metallica is really fucking huge. And is Spaulding pointed out...they are still among top grossing touring bands (when they tour).

It won't happen, though. Metallica does not fit the target Audience. The halftime show is a TV spectacle aimed to draw-in people NOT watching the game. In terms of THAT target audience, as you suggested Green Day makes more sense. Our 24 year-old daughter wont' even be bothered for the commercials, but you bet her ass she watched Kendrick Lamar and she was at the edge of her seat the year of Rihanna. THAT's what they're going for.

Have Third Eye Blind play so everybody cheer for the heroin song. Or have the Dead Kennedys come out and really let us know how they feel.

Everyone seemed to like the Shakira show. Roll that back.

I want them to choose an artist I like for the Super Bowl halftime show. I don't want them to choose an artist I don't like for the Super Bowl halftime show. I would prefer if they didn't choose someone I didn't know much about for the Super Bowl halftime show.

I'm trying to imagine the Atlantic thinkpieces we'd get if a nation were made to enjoy "Orion" in its entirety. I'd enjoy it, though.

   and to think they played Orion in it's entirety this summer tour. I loved every second of it.

I think a better hypothetical is Metallica blazing through "Creeping Death" only to have Jay-Z come out and add-in a rap segment for the 3rd verse.

Journey reunion next year in San Francisco.

There are only two kinds of people- those who like Journey and liars.

Steve Perry turned 76 a week or two ago.

Sprinkle some cash on a Post Malone future.

He has some decent success across genres, more than one song people have heard and is part of the NFL advertising industrial complex.

I've mentioned this before but we sang "Open Arms" for our 8th grade graduation and I've disliked them since. Separate Ways and Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' are good though.

Whenever I get the itch to listen to Journey, I put on Cheap Trick and the itch is safely scratched.
