My prediction was he goes to a place to compete with and ultimately lose to a rookie. We will see if the Jets just roll with Fields for a year or not.

Look man I don't dislike fields and sure man I hope he does well and finds his fit. But his fit wasn't the Bears, and it wasn't Pittsburgh. He's gone now. To the AFC. This is why most of the sports thoughts around here are considered rather inane. Pittsburgh ACTUALLY did want to sign Justin Fields. Which means that they did WANT TO CONTINUE THE RELATIONSHIP. What was Pittsburghs offer is my question. All the article specified was that there was no guaranteed money. Sounds like an offer you might make that you don't expect to be accepted.

Without delving too deep into your occupational "ethos" I'll just say that I doubt very seriously if it has anything to do with why Pittsburgh made a contract offer to Justin Fields to be their starting QB this past weekend.

And anyone that knows sports knows that when teams do not want to "continue the relationship" with guys that are free agents, they do not offer them a contract. Particularly one the size of the one tendered to Fields.
And there was actually guaranteed money on the table for him by the way

By all accounts a contract that was the same amount over 2 years. The difference was that the Jets were willing to guarantee some of the money during the 2nd year and Pittsburgh was not. If the Jets cut him after this season he collects $30 of the $40 mil whereas if Pittsburgh were to cut him after this season he'd only collect $20 of the $40 mil. The sticking point appears to have come down to the $10 million dollar difference in guaranteed money apparently

Maybe if we're talking long term deal but two years signals they're not so sure and the lack of guaranteed money shows Pittsburghs lack of commitment.

Anyway, he's a Jets now so... good luck over there and I'm gonna root on my guy on my team.

Who knows. His signing with the Jets was announced shortly after the free agency period began. And again it's disingenuous to suggest that they wanted to "discontinue the the relationship" when they clearly wanted to continue the relationship.

He's a starting QB as it stands now and we'll see how he does with a new team.

Eeeeeeh, I'm not so sure that's clear. They gave him a low risk high reward non guaranteed contract and got beat by a slightly higher risk but still fairly low risk high reward contract.

I think if Pittsburgh really thought he was their guy, they'd have gone guaranteed and longer years. 2 years ain't serious for a qb of his age. At best, Pittsburgh wasn't really sure. Two years without guarantees says if something else comes up they can bail.

So I guess I'm saying that if what the Jets gave him beats Pittsburghs offer, the Pittsburghs offer wasn't serious.
