We're probably less than 3 years from them just running Audacy Sports or BetQL between Cubs games, Bulls games and the occasional Bears show so that would make it kind of hard to make stars.

Who is the last one besides Parkins to even qualify as a star anyway? Bernstein for all his hubris usually lost to MJH before beginning his long slide into irrelevancy.

They didn't even try to get anybody good after Dan left, so no.

There are no stars in sports radio any longer.

But no, Idk if you guys have noticed or read the news stuff much but there’s these things called influencers which have rendered traditional “stars” as we know them wholly obsolete.

You need a young creative person who likes AM radio and wants to spend his life in the medium.

There won't ever be a star on sports radio period. Any potential star will go right to podcasting where they have full create control and no boss who will fire them for reasons various Score personalities have been fired. Plus, there is far more money in podcasting now if you're good at it than in radio.

See Dan Katz and PFT. 20 years ago they'd be nationally syndicated in radio.

There's plenty of good sports talkers out there, they're just all podcasters.

Parkins was propped up to be the next Score star by mandate. That ended on day 1 when he was exposed as a fraud.

Parkins was enough of a star to parlay his local radio gig into a 7 figure TV deal so yeah I'd say he was a star. He did in a little over 5 years what Dan Bernstein failed to do in a 30 year career.

Parkins jumped ship from radio when he got that opportunity because he knows it's on the way out.

Radio's obviously in bad shape, but linear cable TV? I expect it to die slowly, then all at once. It's not hard to imagine some executive at Disney waking up one day and finally asking "Freeform: why is that a thing?" and then a whole bunch of these cable channels just disappearing.

Radio still has the car. And phones are juuuuussst clumsy enough that they are kind of a pain in the ass to use while driving. But the idea of the medium ever being socially relevant again is pie in the sky. Nobody will ever have the ubiquity of Eddie & Jobo or Mancow again, let alone the Score guys who lets be honest were never that famous (even Bernstein or Mike North).

Unless like I said all the computer infrastructure is so constantly under attack that it stops working. That’s not as implausible as people might think.

Neither Dan Katz or PFT are stars. Portnoy is the only Barstool star. That's why McAfee had to leave to be a star. Barstool listeners know a lot of Barstool people but by the same logic Holmes and Meatpants are stars.

I think Lawrence Holmes thinks of himself as an ambassador of the media and a mentor (Leila proudly mentioned that Lawrence was one of her mentors) to many people in the media. That's different than a star, but is he now the face of the station or is that Haugh?

So, maybe I'm in the minority...

I sometimes listen to the Score later at night at there's a guy named Bart Winkler (I think)...bottom line is that he can talk about most sports, drive a show and handle calls without much difficulty...and here's the surprise-it really isn't about him. He takes multiple calls from listeners from all over the country, and it tends to be engaging.

Why is this this shit so hard for this group at 670 to replicate. I feel like that's what started years ago, and from there grew personalities...and then it became personalty driven...and that dried up when the personalities left.

I just drive sometimes late at night and it's pretty good sports radio. That shit shouldn't be so hard.

I get there are some bad calls/callers, but the hosts turn a segment on taking calls into an awkward bit and don't seem to respect the listeners viewpoint as a starting point unless they are long-time caller of the show.

yeah Winkler is solid. Parkins and Speigel used to have him on at times. Only bad thing about him is the Wisconsin/Green Bay thing

I do remember Dan in the heyday of B&B sounding rather sour about how Greenie had made it and he had not. I think there was a kernal of truth amidst the laughs.

Didn't Dan do some fill in work on national radio for someone? Those things are usually tryouts of a sort (not that the job is open, but should it ever become open), and I think at the height of his power he could have made the jump to national radio. The only problem was that to do that kind of national show you had to take sports very seriously, and Dan's entire bit was that sports and sports fandom is dumb and bad.

As for TV I don't think that was ever in the cards for Dan, and the person who probably thought that most was Dan Bernstein. His was one of the last shows to do any kind of video simulcast, and he constantly referred to the camera as "creeeeepy peeeeople".

This thing has been rehashed around here multiple times in spite of what Oogie and CoF want to believe.

Bernsie had opportunities and decided he wanted to stay in Chicago and do sports talk in his home town.

He filled in for Dan Patrick years ago when the Score carried him (on tape delay), so like 2008-2009. I vaguely remember him doing another fill-in years later, but I don't remember for whom. Maybe it was Patrick again.

That was also around the same time he tried doing some TV and would pop up on channel 5's Sunday night sports wrap-up when Leery was too tired to hump Paula Faris's leg. He seemed kind of ill at ease and I don't think he stuck with it long.
