watched marner as a blackhawk fan and his contract status. 1) i believe the leafs will resign him and let tavares (35 this september) go. 2) i'm iffy on signing him if the leafs let him walk.

yep, Matthews 100% choked this away. It's one thing when he chokes every year for the Leafs, but to do it for USA really sucks.

Like you said, he got manhandled on the losing face off by McDavid to the point where McDavid was able to go forward with the puck and get a shot. That's something that should never happen and really only happens like 1% of the time at most. Then he compounded that by leaving McDavid alone in the low slot to go and chase Marner in the corner who was alreadsy being pursued by a D man. And to top it off Matthews also blew 3 doorstep chances at the start of OT. Not to mention he didn't score the entire tournament.

Who made this loser Captain??

yea it was a great game. Just sucked that USA was so banged up. Losing Matt Tkachuk and two of our 3 best defensemen (Hughes, McAvoy) really hurt our chances.

Would be nice if USA won one of these. I'm not discouraged. I was thinking before the game that whoever loses the game will have great motivation going into next year's Olympics. Hopefully USA builds on this loss and gets over the hump next year in Italy.

The ongoing culture wars would’ve made either result insufferable from fans of either side because that’s how immature society has gotten. I mean for an exhibition game it felt like a Stanley Cup Game 7, including using those OT rules.

For me it was a banger of a game and renewed my interest in the NHL.

Same.

We’re in NFL mock draft season and then OTAs will be here before you know it.

When the captain of Team USA's day job is also being the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs and their starting goalie is the goalie for the Winnipeg Jets, it's really hard for either side to get too wrapped up in any of this. Or at least it would be if our president weren't threatening to annex the other country.

wow..potential guest hockey columnist from the globe and mail.

leaf-world plays spin the bottle for blame. can't score in the playoffs? nylander...marner...matthews. knies is next. matthews is a great media story - from the american sw desert, mom is a mexican from mexico. tread carefully in criticism.

the canadians are very sensitive - they even changed some lyrics in their national anthem recently. an appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping to be eaten last.

All the praise for this tourney relies on canada and USA playing each other..... if next year the finals ends up being Sweden and Finland nobody will give a shit in this country. need the war to end so a russian team can be included

Furthermore, it relied on USA-Canada tensions erupting out of nowhere because our idiot president started musing about annexing them. We've had USA-Canada finals in hockey before and it never felt like more than "oh, how about that."

Today, the Islanders got screwed out of hosting the 2026 All-Star Game, which got cancelled to make room for the Olympics. I don't quite understand, because I was under the impression that since the second lockout, the All-Star Game always got cancelled when they sent players to the Olympics: no game in 2006, 2010, 2014, but there were in 2018 and 2022 when they didn't send. But apparently Long Island was promised an ASG and then had it taken away and replaced with a pre-Olympic, non-hockey "sendoff event." What is this, you put 17,000 people in the arena to tell Connor Hellebuyck to try stopping a shot for once?

Apparently the NHL is debating whether it should even have a traditional All-Star Game anymore. I get it. Even more than the Pro Bowl, which doesn't even exist anymore, it's always been the weird dumb afterthought of all-star games. MLB's has always been the big one, then the NBA's became like Black People Weekend or something, the Pro Bowl was always a total joke, and then the NHL was just like "oh hey we have one of those too." The Winter Classic overtook it as the midseason feature, then the 4 Nations Faceoff was a runaway success because it was USA v. Canada at a time when one country was threatening to colonize the other and the other didn't like it. They came up with a cool idea years ago with the player-draft format, then the NBA stole it and had more success with it, and the divisional mini-tournament they replaced it with always felt contrived and was retired for a return to the player draft, just in time for the league to decide the whole thing is stupid no matter the format.

I don't particularly care for international play, I think it's stupid and just provides another way for players on the teams I actually care about to get hurt, but I've had to raise the white flag on this one because everybody else seems to love wrapping themselves in flags for hockey. I guess it's fun to pretend there's some meaningful difference between Canadians and Minnesotans who all live together in Nevada or Tennessee or wherever else you can skimp out on your income tax. So what they should do is the Olympics every four years, a World Cup in the mid-terms, so to speak, and traditional All-Star Games in the odd-numbered off-years.

I feel bad for you CH, as a hockey fan you are really missing out by not caring about international play. As you stated, you are a party of 1 in that regard.

I love international so much I'm rooting for the Wild now cause of their USA players and of course the Israeli/US rookie.

I love it so much I kinda want Toronto to do well just so Matthews gets some big game confidence.

same goes for Winnipeg and Helly.

You need to get over your anti-American sentiment and learn to embrace rooting for your country in international hockey comps. Often they are better than the NHL playoffs.

Minnesota has always put an emphasis on drafting/signing Minnesotans. That goes back to the North Stars.

But it was the Canadians who ruined international hockey for me. I hate seeing them talk about how great it is to play for Canada, but when it comes time to actually live and work in Canadian cities, all they do is bitch and bitch and bitch about how there's too much pressure from the media, people recognize them at the grocery store and it makes them uncomfortable, taxes are too high, on and on and on. It's a little better than it used to be with McDavid not being allergic to Edmonton, but I think about that dolt Shane Doan, who threatened to retire if the Coyotes moved to Winnipeg or Quebec City because he just wanted to chill out on a horse farm in Scottsdale where no one cared about his job performance.

hating international hockey because a bunch of Canadians don't want to work or live in Canada is an odd hill to be standing on. :?
