It was just a matter of time.

Quote:
The White Sox announced Thursday that chairman and majority owner Jerry Reinsdorf and minority owner Justin Ishbia “have reached a long-term investment agreement that establishes a framework for Ishbia to obtain a future controlling interest in the White Sox.” Under the terms of the agreement, Ishbia will make “capital infusions” into the White Sox in 2025-26 that will pay down existing debt and “support ongoing team operations.”

There will be no immediate transfer of control — and none until at least 2029. The agreement gives Reinsdorf the option of selling his controlling interest to Ishbia at any point from 2029-33. After the 2034 season, Ishbia will have he option to acquire the controlling interest from Reinsdorf

If you keep giving me money, eventually I might let you buy the team. Classic Reinsdorf. Of course, he's a 90-year-old smoker, so I don't think it'll be Weird Jerry himself signing the Sox over in 2034.

This is somewhat similar in structure to how the Orioles were sold, a minor interest and then an option to purchase the controlling interest. In the Orioles case it was upon Peter Angelo's death, but Peter was already close to death.

This agreement gives Jerry 9 years to die.

 this is typical Reinsdorf. He is going to live to be like 110.

He will drink the blood of Cuban prospects to stay young.

This wave of prospects will be coming to free agency just in time for a new, rich owner

Can't wait until they hire somebody they knew in college to run the White Sox. The baseball version of Brian Gregory.

Only another decade of losing before Ishiba MAYBE takes over from Jerry.

This also means that if he's still alive, Jerry keeps his vote during the inevitable CBA lockout after the 2026 season.

I think that World Series win was the best time of his life and he's holding on hoping for one more.

Even death?

Jesus. You'd think this would be a joyous day.

With the death of the RSN's, I would think there would be at least some concern that we've reached peak franchise value, but guys like Rubenstein and the brothers Ishbia know more than I do.

I think there is some merit to that. I don’t think the death of RSNs will hurt big market teams like the Cubs as much as it will hurt small market clubs like the White Sox.

The Rockies, Diamondbacks, and Padres would be the ones to keep an eye on, as they were the first ones to get out of the game. Suns in basketball. The Stars and Ducks have no over-the-air carriage at all, just free in-market streaming, and all indications are that the Blues are the next to go that route.

I doubt we'll see valuations crater, but maybe they'll stop growing as ridiculously as they were post-Sterling.

If valuations soften, expect some loosening of ownership rules to allow Arab fund money into the mix across the American leagues.

Things are getting too bloated as it is to sustain long term individual family ownership positions.

Brother to a one-t ‘Mat’ with a family fortune made in lending…confirmed not Japanese.

Also, don’t sleep on this guy’s Nashville ties.

My crazy theory is that the A's thing stalls out and they get ushered back to Oakland for a Vegas/Nashville expansion.
