I used to think the fascination with celebrity gossip, rumors and feuds was a female thing. The celebrities and the females who read about them in the checkout counter magazines have nothing on these meatheads who work at the Score or the sports fans who seem to be so fascinated with their bad behavior.

I'm with you Coast. I would have much preferred a breakdown of cornerbacks in the draft that is just over two weeks away.

Most of these guys are incapable of covering the draft and actually make fun of those of us who dig it. B&B’s “Who’s Your Guy” segment is about as insulting as it gets when it comes to sports reporting. So let me get this straight, I name a guy, you read the blurb from Pro Football Weekly’s draft guide for me? That’s terrible, they shouldn’t even bother to comment on the draft. In fact, very few journalists/broadcasters in this city make any contribution whatsoever to NFL draft coverage. Like Coast said earlier, they don’t follow college sports closely enough. And so when it comes down to NFL or NBA draft issues, they just back away, and as a defense mechanism, make fun of fans that are into it and classify them as weirdos or say they have too much time on their hands. Out of the 50+ individuals that cover sports in this town (print, TV, radio), I’d say there might be 5 people that have a take worth reading/hearing when it comes to the draft.

Teddy's on the media angle. I wouldn't expect him to be breaking down players and/or positions.

On a local level, Steve Silverman is worth listening to, Mully & Biggs aren't bad, Hub is actually decent on draft coverage, Fred & Doug are terrible, so are Laurence and Zaidman. On the national scene, Mel Kiper is as overrated as it gets, but Mort isn't bad, Dan Pompei (former Chicago guy) is pretty solid over at TSN. Ourlads is a decent source, but they tend to throw in some shit that's really over the top, just to be different. I can't imagine they believe some of the shit I've seen there.

There are all sorts of outlets for good NFL draft information, but unfortunately WSCR, WMVP, and the 4 local papers are not among them.

"I have here an e-mail from a guy who wants to know why he isn't reading about the NFL draft yet, which is almost three weeks away. Here's my answer: Because it's the most overwritten, overanalyzed, space-consuming, time-wasting event on the entire sports calendar, and a week or 10 days of it is all any human being should be asked to bear. Does that cover it?"

That’s a good response. A better one, though, would have been “because I am not sufficiently informed on college football and have no means to write about players I feel the Bears should target.”

Overwritten & space-consuming? That’s insane. Those of us who dig the NFL & NBA drafts have to do a lot of research on our own time. Nobody is tossing this stuff in your lap for you.

Teddy is identified on the Trib web site as the media columnist AND the college sports columnist.

I sent Teddy an email about college hoops during the season and his response to me was, "Thanks, but why are you sending this to me. I haven't written about college basketball all season."

I responded to him that I sent the email to him because the Trib website identified him as the paper's college sports columnist. I said that I thought that designation meant that he cared about basketball as well as football. He didn't respond to that email, but he did write his first college hoops column a few days later.

Regardless of his supposed "job", Teddy doesn't appear to be very into college sports. However, if his Trib gig doesn't work out, his two Murph and Mully columns this week could lead to a celebrity gossip beat with People or US magazine.

He's the Trib's college football writer, and Ed Sherman is their golf writer.

During their 'off season' they each are the 'sports media writer'.

Teddy is just a bit more passionate about it.
