Fans, it could be the end of an era in Chicago radio. Today in Lewis Lazare's column in the Chicago Sun-Times, CBS Radio bossman Rod Zimmerman wouldn't comment on it, but there's growing buzz that Chicago radio icon & longtime White Sox fan Steve Dahl is on borrowed time at 104.3 "JACK FM". The CBS-owned station that claims to "Play What We Want" is on the verge of dismissing the veteran Chicago radio personality due to low ratings for his morning show & a really big salary by radio standards. Two other Chicago radio vets, Eddie Volkman & Joe Bohannon, were fired by B96.3 last week after their morning show experienced similar declining ratings & that they were earning a big salary just like "Stever". "JACK" started carrying Dahl's show after his longtime radio home, 105.9 FM, dropped its "FM Talk" format in favor of "Fresh" music just over a year ago.

Did you know, SHARK, that it was former Loop disc jockey Steve Dahl who came up with the idea of "Disco Demoliton Night" at the original Comiskey Park on 35th and Shields? Did you also know that Shields was named after actress Brooke Shields, who at the tender age of 14 appeared in a risque Calvin Klein ad? Calvin Klein, who the company is named after, is the father of Saturday Night Live talent producer Marci Klein. Saturday Night Live was the launching point for so many, including Tina Fey, Tracey Morgan, Will Farrell, Chicago's very own Bill Murray, potential Minnesota Senator Al Franken and Horatio Sanz. Sanz, best known (along with fellow alum Jimmy Fallon) for laughing at his own jokes on air, is a huge (in more ways than one ) Chicago Bears fan.

I'm definitely aware of Steve's "Disco Demolition Night" at Old Comiskey, circa 1979, between games of what was supposed to be a twi-night doubleheader and that the White Sox had to forfeit the second game vs. the Tigers... Unfortunately, I think there won't be any "Aloha Fridays" for Steve anytime soon on any Chicago radio station now that the other shoe has dropped at "JACK FM"...

Gives new meaning to Aloha Friday.

I wish the Stever and Buzz the best - they've amused me over the years, and probably
are the very reason many of today's radio people got into the business.

I don't think that's going to happen, Cuda...I think Johnny B. is very happy with Kent Voss, the newsman he brought with him from Los Angeles. Kent & Johnny go back to when their former station out West was a classic rocker before CBS Radio out there "JACK"-ed their format...

I hope you had a good weekend. I guess I did. I went to the Bears and Blackhawks games, watched three movies (Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo, Center of the World, and Alpha Dog). Harold and Kumar was quite funny and featured a lot of bottomless nudity, which if anybody cares is my favorite type of nudity. Center of the World was good, and had plenty of t0pless nudity in it, but I found the story rather bleak and the ending unsatisfying. Look at me! I’m a cross between Richard Roeper and Mr. Skin. Alpha Dog was really good, but had a rather quick ending too drawn out of a story line. Justin Timberlake was so awesomely funny in it. I just love that kid.

I have been receiving a lot of really nice emails and Facebook postings from people regarding “my situation” and I just wanted to thank all of you again for your good thoughts. I am truly sorry things didn’t work out better at WJMK for The Steve Dahl Show, but I think it could have given a little bit more time, a greater awareness as to the importance of being involved in the new ratings system, and of course, a few dollars spent on marketing. In fact, I was getting ready to buy my own billboards when they told me they were going to pull the plug. I appreciate the fact that they told me, since I was about to sign a one-year deal with Clear Channel Outdoor.

I have 2 ½ years left on my radio contract and I can’t in good conscience let CBS out of it. I know what you’re saying, “If they are paying you, why did they take you off the air?” The answer is not really even clear to me, but they don’t have to pay Buzz after March, they’ve already “terminated” the rest of my staff, and I am being taken as some sort of write-off (loss). If they’d asked me to pay my staff and not take a HUGE pay cut, I would have done that. I like being on the air, and I had/have the best staff ever. I am definitely going to try and keep them together until 2011. I will find out more on Wednesday about what types of things I can do in the meantime

Nobody's gonna care about Steve Dahl in 2011. Nobody cares about Steve Dahl in 2008. Why hasn't Chicago developed a top-flight radio personality since Roe Conn around 1995? We're gonna be in the year 2020 and someone is going to have Dahl and Brandmeier on the air out on some station in McHenry.

Chicago isn't doing the developing. 4 fat cats run all the stations in town . Since AM HD radio now has stereo quality like FM, by 2020 (2011 even) all stations willl be converted to MUZAK. Personalities cost too much and the new ratings systems overwhelmingly favor music formats. Once all the fat cats merge with Sirius, all who still want talk or sports can pony up for satellite subscriptions galore. Bastards. Here's hoping the recession breaks up the media monopolies into good ole pre-90's indy stations.

For now, I wish Emmis & the Loop 97.9 would pick up Dahl in the afternoons.

I don't think I was doing any hard worship. Guy's had a successful afternoon drive program for several years now.

Hate to say he's highest rated and did pummel and scared Dahl to mornings. He needed Gary Meijer to get there and Gary did do himself in. Can't say Im a listener.

I think it was as bad an idea for Steve Dahl to do morning drive on "JACK FM" as the Hollander boys from CBS Radio had an unknown from Cleveland trying to fill the big shoes of Howard Stern on Steve's former station once he left for Sirius Satellite Radio. When Shane "Rover" French was tapped to host morning drive on the former 105.9 WCKG and on CBS stations in the Midwest, any audience Howard had before he left completely disappeared. Besides, having Steve on a station that "Plays What They Want", minus jocks the rest of the day, didn't make much sense either. They had to be 2 of the worst radio decisions ever!

1. What made Disco demo so famous was the fact that Dahl actually used dynamite to blow up the records, which created such a hole in the field they hd to cancel the second game. The ensuing mob scene made it a famous event. Not as Spaceball planned.
