I knew it was going to come this year or maybe next, but this is a sad day.

Which team will retire his number first? The Cubs or Braves?

Maddux was my favorite pitcher to watch growing up. Congrats on a great career, Mad Dog.

Fred and Dahl get 2 threads each on getting fired, and a legend retires from baseball and gets 4 posts? What is wrong here?

Sad day. Second that he was my favorite pitcher growing up. It was quite a debate when I ordered my latest Cub jersey whether to get Sandberg or Maddux.

Braves man. Not even close.

Not sure on that one. McDonough might want to grab the quick pub from it. Especially considering it will be a double retirement for Fergie and Mad Dog

Fergie is overdue for a number retirement. I think the Cubs had all along waited for Maddux to retire.

McDonough?? Is he going to hang Maddux's #31 between Mikita's #21 and Esposito's #35 in the United Center?? That would certainly grab some quick pub!

Ok yeah I'm retarded. Never mind.

Correction: Crane Kenny, international man of mystery.

Ya never know though... there's nobody wearing sweater #31 on the Hawks right now. LOL

I was suprised when Maddux made this decision. He had said a couple of years ago that he would pitch for as long as someone was willing to have him. I thought he might make an assault on 400.

It could still happen. Maddux doesn't strike me as a guy that would announce his retirement and then turn around and make a comeback...but with the money involved today, anything is possible.

That was really the only reason I was glad he pitched the last two seasons. I was praying at the end of this year that he had enough left to get by that bastard.

There's no doubt in my mind that Greg Maddux is a first ballot Hall-of-Famer, and while the Cubs could retire the #31 for both him & Fergie Jenkins, I think he'll be sporting the black & red cap of the Atlanta Braves when he does get the good news from the folks in Cooperstown, NY.

With the exception of the retired number part, this might be the most obvious post I've ever read. Well done SHARK.

The colors of the Braves are Navy Blue and Red, not black and red.

And you're wrong, Darko.

Let's not get all excited. That happens all the time.
