Two of the best pitchers of the past 50 years have pitched for the Cubs and wore #31. They would of course, be Hall of famer Ferguson Jenkins and future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux. Now that Maddux is retiring, will the Cubs (and should they?) retire the #31? Also, if they do, should it be retired in the name of both pitchers?

Yes and yes. Hopefully this season, maybe when they play the Braves.

The Cubs won't retire that number. If they do it has nothing to do with Maddux.

no they won't and no they shouldn't. i always liked maddux, but he was at his best with the braves. the braves should retire his number. isn't this kind of like asking, "should the cubs retire raffy palmiero's number?"

maddux > palmeiro
palmeiro < hackett
hackett > vasher

What is the value of Maddux, greater or equal to vasher?

I was told there wouldn't be math on this board. Well, both Maddux and Hackett are > Palmeiro, and Hackett is greater than Vasher, but with what you have given me, I'd have to say it is inconclusive.

Wrong. The answer is Netflix.

If the Cubs didn't retire it for Jenkins, they shouldn't for Maddux. Jenkins had what, 170 wins or something as a Cub? How many did Maddux have?

 I wonder if they can retire the same number for two people. Have one flag of Jenkins #31 for the home jersey and one of Maddux #31 for the blue road jersey. IDK, just a 2am drinky thought. :drunken:

When McDonough comes back....they will retire everyones number and have a special pregame ceremony on the field. Again, and again & again.

If it is retired....it is for Fergie. They could associate it with Maddux, but from a Cubs perspective...Fergie had the greatest success (Cubs "success") wearing number 31.

No retired numbers until we're talking about someone who leads them to the world series.

So we'll never have any more retired numbers then?

I'm a cub fan, but also a realist :D

I think he had 133 wins with the Cubs. That's why you retire it for both players.

Jenkins was the more accomplished player while with the Cubs. But Maddux did have some outstanding years here, including one that resulted in him winning his first Cy Young award. If not for Jenkins getting arrested for marijuana possession, they might have retired his # 31 already. But such trasgressions were not forgiven as readily as they seem to be today. But for a guy to win 20 games or more for 6 straight seasons.....he's definitely one of the all time greats. He deserves to have his number retired. The only question, is whether they put Maddux's name on it too, below Jenkins.

Maddux deserves his day at Wrigley Field, as does Fergie Jenkins, who also wore the number proudly. Maddux’s final appearance at Wrigley in the ninth inning of Game 1 of the Cubs-Dodgers series was a moment he’ll always remember. “Absolutely,” Maddux told me afterwards. “I thought about it that night. For me, that was special. I know it was 7-2 or whatever the score was, but for me it was very special to be on that field again. I’ll have experiences there I’ll never forget.” Retiring No. 31 is a no-brainer

Jesus Steve, I think he stole your post to write this nugget.
Anyhow, you're both wrong.

They made Lilly change from 31 to 30, so I am guessing they have plans to retire the number -- now that Maddux has retired, maybe they can actually do it.

I think it WILL happen. The only question in my mind, is whether Fergie is also on the flag along with Maddux. I believe he deserves the honor at least as much, if not more. Look over the career of the others-Billy Williams, Ryne Sandberg and Ron Santo. Fergies accomplishments are probably superior. Only Ernie Banks had a better career. Hell, Santo isn't even in the HOF, as is Fergie and as Maddux will be. I think it happens and that both will be given the honor. Darkside-I see posts here from time to time (not just my own) that I think are interesting and timely, that wind up being written about in the local papers the next day or two. I sometimes wonder if local scribes might scour this board for an idea, when they can't find something to write about.

A friend of mine is related to Fergie's family and told me Fergie has been told his number will be retired in combination of an honor with Maddux possibly next year,

And Lilly was told he couldn't have 31 because it would be retired.

Glad to hear that Fergie will be a part of it. He deserves it as much or more than Maddux for the years he played exceptionally well for the Cubs. 6 years of 20 victories or more. 3000 strikeouts with less than 1000 walks. Ironically, the only other pitcher to total over 3000 strikeouts with fewer than 1000 walks....Greg Maddux!!! How about that...

Of course #31 should be retired. Maddux was one of the greatest pitchers of all time. The fire and passion he displayed was too big to describe. Just picture Aaron Rowand taking the mound and you have Greg Maddux. All the idiots in the front office that let Maddux get away should be rehired by the cubs and then fired. If we would have him all throughout the '90's, we would have won at least 7-8 championships. I call for statues of Jenkins, Maddux, Rowand, and Doug Dascenzo to be built outside the friendly confines for superfans like myself to marvel at for the rest of eternity.

You started off barely amusing...now your just forcing it and its not working

Once you left off Zorich to LB you lost any chance of credibility.
