Good question. I'm sure Selig will guide the process with his steady leadership. Not.

Nothing is ever easy...or "just makes sense" with this franchise.

the Cubs should be sold long before a bankruptcy filing.
Zell sure has messed this up.

The Tribune Co. has hired a financial adviser to help it file for bankruptcy as early as this week, the Wall Street Journal reports. Facing $12 billion in debt and shrinking profits, the owner of the Chicago Cubs and several newspapers has also brought in legal counsel to guide it through bankruptcy court. The Tribune's new adviser, Lazard Ltd., is savvy at debt restructuring and has helped other newspaper companies.

Tribune finances have been shaky since real estate tycoon Sam Zell led a debt-backed agreement to make the company private a year ago. The company must pay $1 billion in interest this year alone, $512 million of which is due in June. The company could avoid bankruptcy by restructuring debt or selling off the Cubs or stakes in other businesses.

All right, so if they file this week does that mean that they cannot sell assets until after bankruptcy is complete?

It may mean that they NEED to sell a bit sooner, rather than waiting for a rebound in the economy, which might allow them to sell at a better price. It's kind of amazing that it has not meant limiting their spending. They continue to seek players trough trades and via the free agent market, that only pad the payroll. Usually teams that are to be sold, trim payroll. Glad that has not been the case.

Doesn't this mean that a judge will have more say in who gets the Cubs than Idiot Selig? I find it really hard to believe that in bankruptcy court a judge will give a rats ass if Bud and hid buddies like Cuban or not if he's offering 300 million more for the team.

Espn's ticker said the Cubs aren't affected by this.

However, they will have to cut half of the Kathy & Judy and Steve & Johnnie duos on 'GN.

The Cubs will not pass "Go".
The Cubs will not collect 200 dollars.

How could they not be effected? They are owned by TribCo. TribCo just filed. That means all of their assets are now being counted and I would assume are in play. As far as I know, you can't just file Chapter 11 and say "but we don't mean the baseball team"

It means it'll take ANOTHER year and a half for anything to happen...and I agree w/Baby McNown, how could this NOT affect the Cubs when they are currently owned as part of the Trib, they're not a separate entity at this point
